2011 is set to be the year for Rugby games with Sidhe and Hb Studios set to compete for gaming dominance.

Hb Studios' Rugby 2012 - HB are in collaboration with The Rugby Forum so if you head to this website you can view their updates so far. I think you have to register with them to view the page though.

http://www.therugbyforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?127-Rugby-2012

On this page there are also three Q&A volumes with the developers, the latest released the other day.

Sidhe's Rugby Challenge -Rugby Challenge will include the All Blacks, Wallabies, ITM Cup, and Super Rugby.

Announced for PC and consoles, it is likely to come out on the xbox 360 and ps3.

Has done pictures of every player in the super 15, motion capture of Jonah Lomu and others presumably.

Using the natural motion engine, similar to the one used for backbreaker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLyYGlMrFJ8

It will feature multiplayer online play, a multi-year franchise mode, extensive customisation options, and dynamic real-time commentary.

This game has only recently been announced and was revealed to the world by Al Baxter at 4:23 http://www.youtube.com/user/tahtv

A forum has been set up here with the latest information. http://forums.sidheinteractive.com/forumdisplay.php?f=84

An article describing the game, PC release confirmed with other consoles suggested. http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/games/4343602/Footy-fever-to-ignite-rugby-release

None that are good rugby simulators but the old EA games are a bit of fun.

It's clearly modded Fifa though.

I'm hoping for another EA rugby game. I still play Rugby 06 on the PS2 occasionally but the players are a little dated now. I loved my backline in the manager mode:-
9 George Gregan
10 Jonny Wilkinson
11 Jason Robinson
12 Dan Carter
13 Brian O'Driscall
14 Brian Habana
15 Percy Montgomery
= Tries off every play.

Pig you've got your backline wrong mate it should be,

9. shane williams
10. Dan Carter
12. Tana Umaga
13. Brian O'Driscoll (GOD)
11. Bryan Habana
14. Jason Robinson
15. Gavin Henson

None of those players could be stopped one on one

I disagree. The ability of Wilkinson and Montgomery to kick the ball from anywhere on the field into the opposition 22 was invaluble, especially on the higher difficulties and becuase lineous were so easy to steal.

Did you ever play Rugby 08? That was probably the worst sequal to any game ever. They removed the Lions tour, 10 nations and the ability to randomise world cup groups whithout adding anything and keeping the gameplay exactly the same. They also updated the player positions incorrectly. Why did they make Tuquri captain of the Waratahs and Beale a winger? Grrr!

I would prefer no Rugby game be made if the developers intend to be as half arsed as EA were with 08.

Is Shane Williams listed as a 9?

It amused me to no end that played would randomly drop the ball if played out of position even if they'd never drop the ball if playing in position.

Also the fact that England had awesome stats was funny.

Yeh, Percy and Wilko were good but Carter was better. Shane's second postion was 9 so I played him there most of the time

The catching was stupid and I got irritated with it after awhile.

08 was rubbish probably the most disappointed I have ever been when receiving a new game

On the odd occasion that using the scrum half run worked, he was deadly as.

Onohato, the Japanese winger. One of the fastest. Gotta at least have him on the bench.

I agree with others who have Wilko at ten. The prodigious kicking is well worth it.

The Irishman Burke is also a handy ten. Although the stat's don't prove it.

Onohato lol licensing issues are funny. World record holder for try's scored. Daisuke Ohata

Tim stimpson was a god on 06 he had 90 something speed and quality goal kicking. One of my favourites for world league

Wilko could kick it a mile but he was slower than Percy and Carter. The backline I chose broke the line every time and Carter had a monster kicking game

jeeesh i hope it is modeled on fifa... that game has turned non followers of football into fanatics... just imagine what a good rugby game would do> especially if there is no league or afl alternative!

it's too difficult to adapt a soccer engine to a rugger one. they tended to use quite out of date fifa engines as well, perhaps because they were easier to work with.

the afl equivalent is poor but the league equivalent game is actually quite fun.

Big News: http://rugbychallengegame.com/2010/12/jonah-lomu-returns/

SYDNEY, Australia – December 6, 2010 – Home Entertainment Suppliers Pty Ltd (HES) announced today that rugby legend Jonah Lomu will appear in the Rugby Challenge console and PC game. The appearance will mark the first time Lomu has appeared in a videogame in over a decade.

“HES is pulling out all the stops to make Rugby Challenge an exciting and memorable experience” said David Robles, Business Development Manager for HES. “Jonah is one of rugby’s greats, and will bring an extra something special to the game”.

In addition to including his name, likeness, and motion in the game, Lomu will also bring his experience and expertise into the development process by working directly with Sidhe, the Wellington based studio behind the game.

“I’m a big fan of videogames and being involved in making Rugby Challenge is a great experience,” said Jonah Lomu.

Rugby Challenge will release for consoles and PC in Q3 2011.

So Jonah is going to be in the game.

For those that hadnt noticed Rugby Challenge also has all the official liscenses for the Super 15 and the Wallabies.

What about the other 8 or so major rugby nations? It wouldn't be that expensive to get the rights surely, I mean it isn't like there is a bidding war.

I presume the minnows would do it for next to nothing.

dobduff11

Trevor Allan (34)
There is a bidding war N4Cer between Rugby Challenge Sidhe and HB's Rugby 2012.

The Minnows are sometimes liscensed but dont have the correct player likenseses so they have funny names

At the moment its looking like Rugby Challenge will be the southern hemisphere game and Rugby 2012 is looking like a northern hemisphere game.

Hb have yet to announce any liscenses yet though

I hope no game has to end up making up players or misspelling their names, that really shits me. Curtly Beel passing to Berryk Barns just isn't the same.

Trevor Allan (34)
I agree baabaa but licenses are expensive and seeing as challenge has locked up the super 14, NPC, Wallabies and All blacks I dont think you will be seeing curtley Bile but Kurtley Beale. They are also doing motion capture and photgraphing all the players. Therefore making them awesome.

Sidhe have a much larger budget than HB so I would assume Rugby 2012 will be relying on the modding capabilities of The Rugby Forum of which I am a member of
