Plenty of context and content there for the S.U.F.C. 2016 thread.

Not very thread can be about your beloved Marlins, nor should it be.

Tom Carter leads his team on for the first time on Sydney University Football Ground for the Round 1 fixture against Eastwood
By Darrell Croker
21/03/2016

Uni captain Tom Carter was extremely pleased and proud of the rookies surrounding him at No 2 Oval on Saturday after first grade came away with a 46-39 win to open the season.
Carter noted it was the first time in probably seven years Uni had beaten Eastwood in the season proper.
It’s a team game of course but the skipper made mention of the efforts of lock Tipiloma Kaveinga, No 8 Jake Wainwright, halfback Jake Gordon and points-scoring machine Angus Roberts. The utility, playing fullback on Saturday, contributed 21 points via a try, five conversions and two penalty goals.
“That was probably Angus’s best game for the club,” said Carter. “Not just his goal-kicking, but his game control.
“As a captain, I’m incredibly proud. We’ve spoken over the past couple of weeks about the club moving into a new era with the turnover of players and the new stadium.
“This is a young first grade side and Eastwood scored first, so it was great to see these guys maintain their composure and fight back.”
It was a solid opening to the season generally for the club with second grade, fourth grade and first grade colts also notching emphatic wins.

China's 1st Grade Report

By Bruce 'China' Lin
The opening of the 2016 Shute Shield last Saturday saw University off to an ideal start defeating last season’s premiers Eastwood 46-39 in a high scoring encounter.
The day also announced to Australian rugby the inaugural game at University’s new home ground – Sydney University Football Ground complete with a beautiful big grandstand containing bells, whistles and much more. The days of the adjacent cricket pitch giving players a dual loofah and mud body scrub are now just a distant thought. The surface was grassy, flat and fast for first class rugby. Waiting 3 hours for a Madonna concert was trifling compared to 5 years waiting for this jewel in the crown. Great effort to Sydney University Sport and Fitness for getting this great facility built!
Eastwood started the days points when their captain five eighth Ayoub shuffled to a thin blindside down the south east corner to score a converted try. The Students soon chipped back the deficit with an Angus Roberts penalty. However two can exploit a blindside. A quick tap penalty by centre Tom Carter five metres from the Eastwood tryline saw Eastwood napping and number 8 Jake Wainwright crashed over. An Eastwood sin binning saw that steadying influence of Tom Carter at centre take advantage. Carter straightened the attack and popped the ball to breakaway David Hickey who bobbed the pass onto the shadowing Wainwright who scored his second try.
ImageProxy.mvc
A dominate SUFC forward pack helped largely with their win over Eastwood
A rolling maul from an Eastwood five metres out saw scores evened at 15-15 going into the break.
The bumper crowd were enjoying the action and with the vista of the old campus buildings and CBD skyline in the distance, a great atmosphere was in place.
The University forward pack was solid and the first minute of the second half saw University inflict every coaches worst nightmare- an early try. A series of pick and drives led by new Waratah prop Tom Robertson saw a pallet of blue and gold hoops target the south east corner resulting in big Matt Sandell scoring . University were on a roll. Sustained recycling saw the giant leprechaun breakaway Rohan O’Regan scoring to the left of the southern posts. Eastwood countered with a long ball try to their winger for a scoreline of 29-20.
But the narrowing scoreline oscillated again when the best try of the game came. University were attacking inside the Eastwood quarter and were rucking ferociously. The ball was spread to the open. When five eighth Ben Hughes passed to big second rower Tipoloma Kaveinga aka Loma some sublime skills were executed. Loma took the ball up and was swamped by two Eastwood defenders. Loma ever so gracefully looped his long arms around the defenders to his left and Angus Roberts in support scored under the posts for a 36-20 score.
ImageProxy.mvc
Speedster Matt Narracott breaks through Eastwood defence
Eastwood refused to throw in the towel and scored two more tries to trail 39-32. However big Loma made ground and steadied the University attack again. The ruck was formed 10 metres out and the ball was passed to the left. Making the extra man was replacement fullback Christian Kagiassis. After a stilrling performance in second grade, the dynamic fullback was re energised after a quick fix of protein and carbs with some magiritsa – a traditional Greek soup filled with lamb offal-yum! Kagiassis received the ball from replacement prop Chris Talakai at high speed to dive over the line increasing the lead to 46-32. But the defending premiers refused to surrender and scored another converted try on the bell for a final score of 46-39.
Traditionally slow starters to the season the University smiles around the salubrious dressing room was plain to see rolling last year’s premiers. Tom Carter summed up the feeling after the game,” we haven’t beaten Eastwood first round since 2009. It means so much when we do it wearing this jersey!” Plenty of work still lies ahead but a good start to the season.
Next week University travel to the foot of the mountains on a super Saturday versus the mountain men of Penrith.

Sydney University def Penrith 80-26 (3.00pm, Nepean Rugby Park)
Penrith may have lost their second round against the highly fancied Sydney University but the score certainly doesn't tell the full story. The team from Western Sydney were up against it in just their second match under mentor and former Wallaby Jeremy Paul and if there was any test of their progress as a team to date, this would be it. If the Students expected a walk over from the start they were in for a shock as a new look and determined Penrith side flew out of the gates early to open the scoring with the first try of the day. The Students were quick to respond but the first half proved a physical affair, as both teams wrestled for possession. Sydney University soon gained control and despite a second try to the Emus, the experience and slick execution of the Students was soon evident and they lead at half time 42-12.

Again the Emus were not quite ready to capitulate and in what is clearly a new spirit within this Western Sydney side, they came out fighting early in the second half and again managed to add another 14 points to their tally to take their team score to one of the highest it's been in over a season. As expected the Students would always be a difficult opponent to beat and as they upped their intensity this well drilled side ran in a series of late tries to close out the match, 56-26. Uni's Matthew Narracott had an outstanding game this week with three tries to his name, while Angus Roberts notched up a try and 10 conversions to his personal tally. Jake Wainwright, Rohan O'Regan and club stalwart Tom Carter were also exceptional on the day.

For Penrith, Nemane Ramone and Joseph Faoagali performed well but full credit to the entire team today for they have shown that they are developing well under new coach Jeremy Paul. Certainly they can take much from this result as they head into another epic confrontation next week against the defending champions Eastwood. The result also sees Sydney University top the ladder while Penrith secured a bonus point for their efforts today and have leaped off the bottom of the table for the first time in over a year.

SUFC vs Randwick Review

Randwick def Sydney University 23-19
(3.00pm, Sydney University Football Ground)

The TV Match of the Day proved to be an absolute nail-biter as the two competition leaders went head-to-head to stake a claim on top of the leaderboard. Randwick were very strong from the start and took an early lead that held for the duration of the game. A dominant set piece and quick work at the breakdown proved crucial while the work of Andrew Deegan saw him controlling territory well for the Wicks and adding 13 points to the board for the Galloping Greens.

The Students stepped up the tempo of their game and managed to rein the Wicks in off the back of some excellent work by Jake Gordon and Jim Stewart. A card looked to derail the Wicks but they proved gallant in defence on their own line and showed patience in the final 15 minutes to fend off a resurgent Uni attack. For Uni, standouts included Jake Gordon, Folau Fainga'a while Siaosi Halaifonua impressed on debut. For the Wicks, Deegan was again exceptional while the work of Andre Kellaway and Sonny Satuala to put points on the board can't be overlooked.

Randwick's victory gives them the top berth on the table, a single point ahead of Southern Districts, with Sydney University falling to fourth.

China's 1st Grade Review

By Bruce 'China' Lin
University’s run of bonus point victories stopped last Saturday when they were narrowly defeated by Randwick 23-19 at Sydney University Football Ground.
The first half was a dour affair against the old green foe. A lucky try and some kicks at goal had Randwick ahead 13-3 at halftime. University failed to build any continuity or momentum. Randwick on the otherhand minimised any mistakes and were driving University back through the boot of their five eighth Deegan.

ImageProxy.mvc

The healthy crowd in University’s boutique stadium were expecting some more action for the second half. This came from the kick off. University received a bonus when Randwick immediately knocked on. Following the ensuing scrum University were able to receive a penalty. Randwick quickly replied from a University mistake to camp themselves inside the five metre area. Some intense picking and driving led Randwick to score next to the uprights through prop Goodbody . University were behind 23-9 and needed to bounce back as half the game had elapsed.
University broke the drought soon after. Inside the green quarter the ball was shifted to the left. Outside centre Jim Stewart was able to glide through and bust over the line in the north east corner. Not a particularly spectacular try by big Jim’s standards but enough to peg back the deficit to 23-14.
University received some extra profit when Randwick were sin binned for slowing down University ball. Randwick were then subjected to a period of protracted University attack. University half back Jake Gordon later elevated University supporters normothermia above 97.7 F. Gordon was able to pilfer a loose ball from the back of the lineout. Collecting the loose ball at speed a dash was made to the eastern corner. Gordon ran 45 metres to score a try untouched. The scored had narrowed to 23-19 giving some hope for the blue and gold but time was running out.
ImageProxy.mvc

The last few minutes saw the Students pressing the Randwick line which was holding firm. The clock was winding down and Randwick took advantage of this to shut down the game for the ball to be booted dead at the full time bell.
Although it would hardly warrant an indication of who will enjoy bragging rights come August, a good lesson was delivered to the Students that there are no easy games in 2016.
Next week University are again in battle against those rather large Manly Marlins at Manly Oval.

It was Nick Kellaway who scored the first try for Randwick. Andrew was called up to the Waratahs and didn't play on Saturday. Nick is Andrew's twin brother which might have explained the confusion except Nick has brown hair not red, is several inches taller, plays in the forwards and doesn't look much like his twin

Manly vs SUFC Review

ImageProxy.mvc

By Graham Croker
12th April, 2016

Sydney University put the Manly Oval hoodoo behind them on Saturday, with the 43-29 result over the Marlins lifting them to third on the Shute Shield ladder after four rounds.
The Students can thank their tight five for gaining scrum ascendancy from the outset, with the move to shift prop Jeremy Tilse to the second-row to partner Will Skelton paying handsome dividends.
It’s been many a year since a Manly pack was shunted around on their home ground, but with Skelton packing on the tight side, the Students’ scrum erupted at each set piece, earning several tightheads and a number of kickable penalties.
And fullback Angus Roberts took full advantage, landing four penalty goals to go along with three conversions and a brace of tries for a 28-point haul. Halfback Jake Gordon also bagged two tries off the back of dominant scrums near the Marlins’ line, while hooker Folau Fainga’a rounded out a solid afternoon’s work with the Students’ fifth try.
Despite the scoreline and University’s territorial dominance, the hosts led for much of the afternoon, going to the break 19-18 in front, skipping out to 29-18 early in the second half, before finally being overhauled with 18 minutes remaining.
Indeed their opening to each half was from the textbook. They started the match with a try to flanker Ethan Uili in the second minute after 10-phase build-up that took them almost the length of the field.
The Students retaliated from the restart and two penalty goals from Roberts had them 6-5 ahead in the 12th minute.
They were on the attack again when a dropped pass resulted in Marlins fullback Brendan Hartmann collecting the scraps and sprinting 60m to score next to the posts. Five-eighth Sam Lane’s conversion put the hosts 12-6 in front.
The Students mounted another solid build-up from the restart, with Skelton heavily involved, and seven phases later Roberts crossed for his first try. His conversion put the Students ahead 13-12 after 18 minutes.
The Students held field position for the next 10 minutes before Manly caught them napping with a quick lineout throw to winger Josh Turner, who careered away to score from 60m out. Lane added the extras for a 19-13 scoreline.
ImageProxy.mvc

With five to the break, the Students pulled a set move from a lineout 40m out, with five-eighth Ben Hughes putting outside-centre Jack Redden into a hole with a cut-out pass. He found Roberts in support to score his second try.
The combatants went to the break with Sydney University on top in the set pieces and holding territorial sway, but still behind on the scoreboard.
Manly opened the second half the same as the first, with Junior Palau diving on a left foot grubber from Lane after a solid build-up. The hosts went further ahead minutes later when Lane landed a penalty for a 29-18 margin.
Three massive scrums put the Students back in contention. The first drew a penalty, the second opened a clinical six-phase assault that ended on Manly’s line and a scrum feed to the hosts. The Students won a tighthead with number eight Jack Wainwright cleverly peeling off the back to send Gordon over for the first of his tries.
The sides traded territory until the 54th minute when Fainga’a scored on the end of some good lead-up work from Lane, inside-centre Tom Carter and winger Matthew Narracott.
At 29-28 the hosts were still in front but flanker Rohan O’Regan won a turnover for the Students which set up a six-phase assault by the forwards and scrum under the Manly posts. Wainwright once again used the solid platform to send Gordon over next to the posts. Roberts’ conversion put the Students in front 35-29. A further try and penalty goal sealed the deal for the Students, who are at home to Western Suburbs next Saturday.
This was a day for the tight five to take a bow, with Skelton also proving a handful in the open, along with Wainwright. Carter was in the thick of the action from the midfield and virtually played as an extra flanker in the closing stages. He also brought out the team spirit in the club by having First Grade form a guard-of-honour for Third Grade Colts at St Paul’s College Oval in the opening game of the day on which the club won six from seven.
Scoreboard

Sydney Men’s premier competition – Round 4
First Grade: Sydney University 43 (Jake Gordon 2, Angus Roberts 2, Folau Fainga'a tries; Angus Roberts 3 cons, 4 pen goals) defeated Manly 29 (Ethan Uili, Junior Palau, Josh Turner, Brendan Hartmann tries; Samuel Lane 3 cons, pen goal) at Manly Oval on Saturday.

China's 1st Grade Report

By Bruce "China" Lin
University got back to their winning groove with a come from behind 43-29 victory over the Manly Marlins last Saturday at Manly Oval.
For so many years a graveyard for visiting University teams, the Students with some added Waratahs dominated Manly’s pack which ultimately provided the cutting edge.
But the game started in favour of Manly when they came out with all guns blazing. Attacking inside the University quarter the ball was swung wide towards the seaside for their winger to scorch down the sideline to score in the corner. However University gained parity with fullback Roberts kicking two quick penalties for a slender lead of 6-5 midway through the half.
You could sense that Manly were using their quick outside backs to outplay the disciplined University . That came when a University ball was fumbled along the western flank. The Manly winger B.J. Hartmann - B.J. an acronym for ‘By Jingo’ swooped on the ball and raced down field without a hand touching him to score a converted try.
ImageProxy.mvc

Stung by this, University grafted their way downfield. Pressing inside the Marlins five metre area University were fiercely recycling the ball. A short ball was received by retuning Waratah prop big Paddy Ryan who crashed over near the uprights. The conversion saw University with a slender lead of 13-12.
There must have been a game plan to catch University napping at any opportunity as the next Manly try had all the hallmarks of being just a bit audacious. The ball trickled over the western sideline for a Manly lineout. Before you could say- Lee Lin Chin and set a lineout, a quick throw was executed by Manly allowing a trailing player to race downfield for the easiest of tries. The tries were now flowing freely after University fullback Angus Roberts scored in the eastern corner following quick backline passing. At 19-18 Manly were just hanging on at the half time break.
The commencement of the second half was a mirror image of the first as Manly tried to assume the ascendancy. A chip by their five eighth Lane saw a supporting forward regather and literally crash into the upright to score a converted try. A penalty soon after propelled Manly’s lead to 29-18. A hard task to peg back at Manly Oval? Not in the eyes of the Students as a period of disciplined play took place.
University managed to set a scrum five metres from the Manly line. University’s eight packed with iron, protein and Will Skelton commenced to backpedal the Marlins scrum. The monstrous shove was trying to put the Marlins into the Manly Aquarium at West Esplanade. University halfback Jake Gordon took full advantage to run from the scrum base and score an easy try. Roberts playing with great control now made the extra man in the backline and regathered a chip to once again score. University had regained the lead with a score line of 30-29.
The introduction of some fresh reserves gave added venom to University’s attack. Backrower Brad Wilkin on club debut showed why he is a Waratah squad member with some excellent ball turnovers and backing up when he was introduced.
But the potency of the University scrum could not be withheld from public viewing for too much longer with the final try. Some ferocious play by the Students saw them pack a five metre scrum. The University scrum slowly commenced to trample over a tiring Marlins pack for Jake Gordon to score his double. University had effectively caught, filleted and battered the Marlins pack!
A few extra penalties gave the Students a further lead of 43-29 to see out the game. A particularly satisfying victory silencing University Captain Tom Carter’s ‘friends’ perched on the grassy knoll who transitioned from cacophonous to mute in record time!
ImageProxy.mvc

After last week’s narrow loss the smiles were all round the University huddle after the game. Jake Gordon attributed the win to “Tuesday & Thursday’s hard work paid off.” Coach Tim Davidson had a belief, “We worked hard and just believed in ourselves and didn’t shirk it.”
Next week University are back at home on the annual Services/White Ribbon Day versus West Harbour where there will be some NSW Constabulary mingling at the ground.
