Just in regards to Syd Uni;

Jono Jenkins was on the bench on friday night and Pete Betham was named in the A game on sunday. With both players not in the regular 35 Waratah squad does that allow them available for club football ?

Don't know if it has been mentioned on here already, but it looks as though Dave Harvey has signed with Norths for 2012.

Heard 2 rumours. Can anyone confirm?

1. Gordon has $700,000 gone missing due to "creative accounting"
2. All Shute Shield clubs will be reduced to 2 Senior grades and 1 Colts in 2013 or 2014 to limit costs.....and keep Parramata and Penrith in the comp.

The ramifications of this are so big that this may have to be moved to the Subbies thread;)

That'd make sense to me. If you want to run this as the 3rd tier of Australia rugby it'll work providing a couple of things.

1. The clubs are split into two (a performance geared and a social geared one) rather than disintegrating. A good example of this is the Hawthorn AFL Football club and the Hawthorn Amateur Football Club. As a hypothetical example is in the Shield you'd have the Sydney Uni Football Club (featuring budding professional players who may or may not be students) then in Subbies you'd have the Sydney Uni Social Rugby Club (call it whatever) featuring guys from the Uni who just want to play the game.
2. A player loaning system, we all know on occasion clubs get down to their 3rd or 4th string players when some are broken and some are on rep duty. There needs to be a loaning system, for example a bloke could be invited to train with a Shute Shield club once a week but play for his school's old boys club and IF injury strike the Shute Shield club they can call him up and give him a chance.

Parra have a lot of players at training apparently so not sure why they would cull the comp with them in mind...

crap!

Can't speak for Penrith but I can assure you, Parra's numbers are fine. At this point in time, we have the numbers for 6 grade teams and 3 Colts teams. The numbers will of course, drop off for varying reasons in the coming weeks in grade, but we are as sweet as a nut. Would love an honest answer out of the Penrith camp.......but hey, why would they break the habit of a lifetime.

Dave Harvey to Norths will save Gordon the 700k that is supposedly missing as Dave Harvey does not come cheaply
Has he a contract with any other clubs in Sydney as he has form in forgetting these minor issues of signed contracts

Wow, how sad, that can only weaken this once fine comp, so the Randwicks/Unis will now raid the subbies competition?

With respect Grievous , Randwick now seem to focus on a solid colts programme. They have copied the most successful club of recent times, Sydney Uni in that strategy. Am unaware of any subbies raiding by them.
Perhaps the comp should be the 2 top grades and top colts being played together and the other grades at alternate venues like the colts now. That won't save anyone money though.
Can't be good for rugby to somehow let grassroots grade rugby fall away for lack of a few bucks.

It's been the objective of the ARU to have 2 grade & 1 colts team for a number of years.
If this should come about there will be no 3 & 4 grade or 2 & 3 colts teams .

In the know I think.

This rumor has been around for many years and I think it is still a very strong desire of the ARU who are getting more and more involved in Shute Shield business.
The issue is that the dumping of 3s and 4s as well as 2s and 3s in colts will actually cost the clubs money.
The lower grades actually make a profit as they are unpaid.
Normally the coaches are also gratis.
You still have to pay for the fields, administrators etc etc and the lower grades normally play in the hand me down gear from last years 1s and 2s.
Without the fees and the hotdog and beer purchases, mum and dad and the girlfiend turning up to watch Billy play 4s, clubs will be bankrupt in a year.
Trust me 3s and 4s cost bugger all to run most all of the money goes to 1s the costs change very little and you lose all that revenue.
This over rides the moral issue and the destruction of mateship etc etc.
I know our 4th grade annoy the hell out of people from other clubs at Concord with their singing etc but they are the ones that pay their way and then some.
Common sence must prevail here.

the lower grades and lower colts are the heart of the clubs. These are the blokes that are great clubmen, play because they love the game and are looking for a game of rugby each week and supporting their club. They normally are the volunteers that man the canteen, run sidelines and act as groundsmen. Without these the clubs and competiton will lose some real feeling and emotion. We don't want NRL but a competition that is more than professionalism and all about money

Rugby is first and foremost a players' game, especially at the lower levels.
If we lose sight of this fact the game will morph into yet another souless professional business.

Totally agree. Rugby is a fun game (amongst other things).
Perhaps that is why the ARU have not proceeded with the restructure.

I think to call the 3rd and 4th graders the heart and soul of the club does a great injustice to the lion's share of 1st and 2nd Grade players that know that professional rugby is beyond them but play that level to challenge themselves and to see just how far they can go.

They don't do it for cash or accolades but because they love the challenge of playing a good standard of the game.
