Halfway point and a quick report card

A
Rats
: Sitting more than a game in front with a young team. Performing well across all grades. Would have been targeting finals at the start of the season, but will be resetting their goals now.
Wildfires: Used to be close to a lock for 5 ladder points when playing them, to be sitting in the top 6 at the halfway mark is a great achievement. Should be aiming to make the finals now, and no one will be excited about facing them. Recent announcements on partnerships will only make the program stronger in the coming years

B
Randwick
: An experienced team sitting in 2nd place. Could be marked as an "A", if the gap between 1st and 2nd wasn't more than 5 points. In a great place to finish strong and feature well in the finals. Their next up game against the Rats is a big one for them. Lose and they lose touch with the Rats and fall back into the field.
West Harbour: Not really final contenders, but nobody expected them to be. They are improving each season and appear to be making a real effort to improve their Colts program

C
Sydney Uni
: They're in the mix. Had some close losses and could easily be sitting in the top 2. For a club without juniors, on the one hand, they do well, but on the other, they rely heavily on recruiting well. May struggle when the mid-year uni holidays hit. And have lost fewer players this year to playing grade than they did last year. Pass mark at this stage.
Eastwood: Another young team who appeared to struggle with the step up to Colts from school. Have looked better recently, notably the win against Manly. However, unless they have a big improvement in the 2nd half of the year, they are unlikely to feature in the finals
Manly: Very close to a "D", however, the only team to beat the Rats this year has been very inconsistent and has paid for that by being outside the 6 on the ladder.

D
Easts
: Last year's premiers have recruited even more stars this year. Despite what must need an actuary each week to pick a team within the points cap, they haven't gelled and sit outside the top 3, which is not good enough for the reputations of the players they have.
Gordon: Maybe a tough call on them, perhaps a win against Easts in the last round would have bumped them to at least a C. Last year's grand finalists have a mature team and what looks like enough players to field 5 teams. Came into this season as favourites with Easts and haven't yet lived up to it.
Souths: After an upset win over Easts to start the season, have struggled since and sit on 2 wins for the first half of the season. Any team that can beat the star-studded Easts should be placed higher than they are currently on the ladder.

E
Two Blues:
Firmly last on the ladder with only 1 bonus point to their name. Would be an F except for the fact that they have managed to field 2 teams each week after forfeiting 1's games last year. Hopefully, they can keep the playing group together and finish the year with 2 full grades, and if they do, that will jump them to a "C".

F
Norths:
How does a team with their location and catchment do so poorly in Colts year after year. Just 1 win (against 2 Blues) to show for the year. And only 1 win in 2nd grade and 0 in third grade. Just not good enough.

Agree or Disagree?

Great to see strong representation from NSW across Tahs and heritage Tahs players in the Aus u20 team.

We're back for the 2nd half of the season with a huge match
Rats v Randwick: Hard to choose, so picking the home team
Norths v Two Blues: Battle for the bottom, Norths to be too strong
Wildfires v Gordon: Predicting an upset here unless Gordon has managed to improve their lineout in the season break
Sydney Uni v West Harbour: Uni too strong
Eastwood v Easts: An improving Eastwood shouldn't be able to stay with a Talented Easts
Manly v Souths: Despite the scoreline in the first game between these two, Souths were very competitive for the first 20 minutes. That has been the story for them in most games. If they have managed to address that, they could sneak an upset at home. But Manly sitting outside the top 6 will have Manly focused on a better 2nd half of the season, and they should get the win.

Enjoyed watching Sydney Uni 1st colts again West Harbour - don’t let the score deceive you. It was a tight first half with West Harbour matching Uni try for try. Handling from Uni and poor defence let them down. Uni made a few key changes in the second half and the forward pack dominated with multiple scrum penalties. Will be interesting for the next month with clubs losing players to the u20.

Had a ripper arvo watching Sydney Uni 1st Colts take on West Harbour. Don’t let the scoreboard fool ya , first half was neck and neck, both sides trading meat pies like it was happy hour. Uni looked a bit dusty with the handling and their defence had more holes than a fishing net.

Second half though? Different story. Uni brought on the cavalry, and the forwards went full beast mode – scrum penalties flying like free schooners on a Friday. Gotta give it to Wests though, they didn’t roll over easy.

Next few weeks should be spicy with clubs losing players to the U20s. Time for the depth chart to earn their sausage rolls!

This weeks round
Norths v Easts: Predicting a similar score to the Norths v Two Blues game - just the other way around this week.
Two Blues v Rats: Rats were very 1 one-dimensional in the first half against Randwick and outclassed. A couple of position and personnel changes in the 2nd half, and they looked more like a top 3 team. They'll be too good for Two Blues this week, all the same.
Manly v West Harbour: An injury-stricken Manly will still be too much for West Harbour.
Wildfires v Randwick: Randwick looking like the favourites now, playing an attacking brand of footy. The only hope for Widlfires is to pressure Randwick and capitalise on their errors.
Souths v Eastwood: 1 of 2 games of the round. This game could go either way, but Souths at home after a good showing v Manly last round should get the win
Gordon v Sydney Uni: Game of the round and a close battle in round 1. This one is a coin toss!

Current favourites based on Form
1 - Randwick = Well-coached, play an attractive style of Colts rugby with a solid group of Year 2 Colts
2 - Easts = Current premiers, Roster of big names, expect them to start clicking as the finals approach
3 - Gordon = Both Gordon and Rats play a similar style. Gordon also has a strong group of year 2 colts who will hold them well in finals
4 - Rats = Young team and based on team lists, still trying to settle on a consistent team. Should be favourites for next year.
5 - Uni/Manly = Both struggled with injuries. Either could string a run to the finals, though.
6 - Wildfires = Could sneak into the finals?

How do we feel about 100 points being put on Two Blues in Colts?
Is it time to finally rethink the whole Rugby in the West approach?
