You telling me Swans games, even the away ones rated less than 40k?

Not all games outrated Swans games. But on occasion the Shute Shield did.

Below is a copy of the 2012 Shute Shield ratings. I can't find the 2013 and 2014 has not been published yet. The games in bold are the games that rated higher than the Swans in NSW.

So did I.

Did you know he was the Column 8 guy for SMH?

I had no idea. I thought he was just a crazy local who ran for Wentworth every 4 years.

we just need to find the other 7 who did too.
No I saw his Facebook when looking for that video and worked out he was at fairfax.
My favourite policy, which I hope he retains or even expands is the space launch pad at Edgecliff centre.
I may hand out how to votes next time - although I expect he doesn't bother with rubbish like that!
Im sure he could be persuaded to have a rugby policy - it fits with the image for Wentworth!

I find those ratings very believable because they've grown to about 40-50k in 2014. What I don't find believable is that Swans games rated below that.

I also can't believe the Swans had any TV audiences in Sydney that were lower than a Shute Shield audience.

From what I can work out, the Swans average over 100k in Sydney and are one of the highest rating teams in the comp.

Yeah, the Swans average well over 100,000 for each game in NSW........

When their viewership dropped around 5-6 years ago they were still averaging over 100,000 for each game.

Interesting - I am hearing on good authority that there are interested parties.

Am trying to find out more.

this is what I heard late last year - it sounded like the people behind it were doers so despite my predisposition to gloom I think it may happen

Hoping so, I do reckon if a FTA commercial Station picked it up they would get better ratings compared to what ever they are showing at present at 3pm on a winter Saturday.

Yes fair point Dave but it doesn't cost $1 million a season to produce!

I understand there is a cost, and it is not an industry i know much about.
  • ABC was Commercial Free less revenue coming in.
  • Other FTA have commercials as frustrating as it can sometimes by, but advertisers pay money, and pay even more with high ratings.
As i said, not an expertise of mine but it may work - fingers crossed hey.

The biggest issue for commercial TV is that it isn't something they could broadcast nationally which has a big impact on the financial viability.

BH could you please explain that a little better due to my lack of knowledge;

When I go to the mid Nth Coast on holidays - it is'nt 7 / 9 / 10 it is called Prime and other names that dont come to me straight away. The broadcast different shows at different times - it is almost as if Prime etc. will Pick the National ones they want and televise them when they want, they also advertise local businesses.

Maybe it is a bit like the ABC - if i have read / understood correctly the Shute couldn't be watched Australia wide at 3pm on a Saturday.

It is some of these out of the way areas that religiously watch the Shute each Saturday because it is good quality rugby, whether it be the sea changing watching it at the local RSL, or kicking back at home with the dog sitting under their legs.

The figures the clubs were shown the last few years had regional NSW ratings on par with Sydney Metropolitan. My understanding is that the commercial stations are screaming out for saturday afternoon content. Shute Shield ratings the last 5 years tick their boxes to broadcast live statewide and on delay interstate if they wanted to go that way.

That's the feedback we've been provided anyway!

The ABC has a completely different charter to the commercial networks. They are not profit driven so could spend money on things like the Shute Shield.

You are correct that the regional TV stations don't follow exactly the same broadcast schedules but in most instances they do share shows.

The difficulty comes from the fact that live sport is expensive to produce and the Shute Shield only has reasonable interest in NSW and probably Queensland.

In addition, commercial stations aren't going to be killing each other to get it, because:

1) Fitting ads in regularly. NRL on a Friday night is "live" to a point, and the hierarchy have scheduled stoppages to slip an ad in. The game from Brisbane into Sydney is delayed so they can put ads in whenever they like. Mostly about gambling...

2) While Saturday afternoon is otherwise dull for TV, consider the plight of the rugby clubs playing at the same time - we all scream for grassroots support, but wouldn't it be better to get out to your local ground and put some money in the till?

Everyone from Premier Rugby down to Subbies 6th Division could use the immediate cash flow benefits rather than watching Sydney Uni and Eastwood on TV 6 times a year each. The TV stations will ask how much better the ratings could be if they weren't clashing with a bunch of other rugby games, and maybe request the game of the day moves.

But if you're a Super Rugby watcher, First Grade runs nicely into the Saturday game from NZ and then maybe a double-header in Oz. So again, issues.
