KBs kick was pretty bloody hard even if he connected well.

No one will remember the context of the game in a few years time when they roll out the SBW footage.

SBW has signed a 2 year contract with NZRU and the Chiefs starting from 2015 with the aim of competing in 7s at Rio.

The Chiefs will be hard to beat with SBW and Fruean reunited in the midfield (this time at the Chiefs rather than the Saders).

Think he's missed the boat on his marketability in NZ myself. A lot of people were looking forward to him playing in 2014 (myself included), but there's another year for somebody else to put their hand up.

I'll say it here now... I don't think he'll make either the RWC starting 15 (will prob make the squad) or the Olympics 7's.

Imagine a Chiefs midfield of SBW and Fruen vs a Blues midfield of Nonu/Saili and Piutau/Saili!

I just can't see $BW being any good at Rugby 7's.

For our sake, I'd like to see him in the Darkness 7's at Rio.

It would be different if he was 18-20 years old in 2013.

That's an odd statement HJ. DJ Forbes is the NZ 7's captain and a stalwart. To me SBW appears to have greater dynamic qualities that would suit 7s than he does.

You're kidding, Forbes is a breakdown specialist (plays 7 in the 15s) and is supremely fit. There's no way SBW goes well at 7s. If you're slow (which SBW would be classified as in 7s) you better be good at the ruck area and be fit.

Yeah your right, he always gets shown up as such a liability in both codes. Couldn't possibly adjust his skillset to be a competent 7s player.

Give me a break.

I will admit I have not been a huge follower of 7s, but I wasn't aware breakdown specialists were in high demand in 7s. If that's the case, would Pocock and Waugh not have been massive hits in 7s prior to their 15s careers taking off?

The breakdown can be very important these days. But when there are only 14 players on the field there is no particular advantage in having a fetcher per se, every single player has to know how to win, or how to defend, at the tackle.

Could be wrong but I think SBW does ok in that regard.

I thought that a bloke the size of a test 6, with the ability to run and hit as hard as one, yet quicker, more dynamic with the ability to offload would dominate in 7s. Guess not.

Sevens is very much an ensemble game. If SBW knuckles down and learns the ins and outs of the game as a whole, and the New Zealand patterns in particular, he should do okay. Not sure that he will dominate, but I reckon he would be a welcome addition most squads.


From my perspective, the only type of player who could walk into a great side and automatically dominate would be a player with Olympic 100 metres speed - assuming that he also had the basic rugby skills.

He also won't be the size of a test 6 if/when he plays 7s. He will have to lose a pretty significant amount of weight just to get his fitness levels to where they need to be.

Really? DJ Forbes weighs in at 103 kgs, Tim Mikkelson is 103kgs, AMbrose Curtis is 100kgs, Bryce Heem 105kgs.

He'll need to work on his fitness and his work at the break-down but SBW has shown he's not scared of hard work or a willingness to learn.

He's not super-quick by 7's standard but that would go for a lot of players in the NZ team. They've lacked express pace for a while.
