Kalani by the end of last season was showing he's Super Rugby starting calibre 9 and then the bench 9 is straight from the Aus 20s and looked really good. Seems the right way to be structuring it. Werchon is still in the system as well but getting pro experience elsewhere for now. May give another guy a shot throughout the comp as well.

In comparison, Thorn has been consistently disappointing with the opportunities he's had so far. Harrison Goddard is quite a significant loss for the Brumbies.

I think that 'seems light' was probably a joke - Cartwright is also traditionally a 9 (was the bench halfback for the Reds against Wales last year), even though he's been spending more time on the wing lately.

Apologies for the misread. Have no idea who Cartwight is. Probably a smart move given the amount of 9s around if you can do it and have the ability to play 9 still.

It's quickly becoming a position of depth around the country. 19s will have a few gems as. Blank for NSW has a lot to like and I think a lot of teams will be watching the 18s 9 (Angus Grover) who's back from last year.

How things can swing quickly in a position. You have the current Wallaby group who are doing well. Next tier or Kalani and Teddy then all these young guys coming through.

I realise this will be sacrilege to say as a Reds fan, but with McDermott being arguably the best finishing 9 in world rugby do the Reds consider Kalani to start and McDermott to come off the bench next year?

I am equally happy for McDermott to start but if he is so valuable against tired test match players, surely, he could be expected to carve up against lower quality players at the end of a Super Rugby game if he had equally fresh legs as he does in Tests.

We'll might see this occasionally as a horses for courses selection or as part of load management for Tate, but he's capable of imposing himself across from the jump in super matches to the level he does form the bench so I can't see it being the plan for more than a couple of games. Just look at the Force game in Perth or the Hurricanes game in Brisbane, you don't want to limit that impact too much. He'll almost certainly spend a few games rested again though, giving Kalani and Werchon/Martens their chances.

I think Kalani's skillset has improved and is pretty well rounded. I don't love his game management, though.
Maybe it's because he is reguarly coming off the bench, trying too hard, but I just feel the speed/tempo he tries to play at, the passes he is pushing doesn't reflect the rest of the team or the defensive team's line speed. This is one area Tate actually excels at comparatively.

That been said, whilst Tate performs better off the bench then Kalani, i also think Tate performs better starting then Kalani.

IF he plays next season the way he finished the last, by the end of the season there will be more people calling for the same set up as the Wallabies witht he X factor Tate has. That all depends on Kalani killing it though and Tate being somewhat quiter which I don't see happening.

Gives the Reds a good option should an opportunity arise to give Tate a rest though.

This hasn't been advertised very well.

Also unfortunate timing with it clashing with the Broncos v Raiders NRL Finals game at 4pm on Sunday.

Will be interesting to see crowd and viewership numbers.
