Sydney Subbies 2022

Hearing the Div 2 meeting planned for this week is likely to be a mess. Multiple clubs unclear on whether they will be able to field a 3rd grade let alone 4s, others in big trouble getting a colts together. Be interesting to see if there is any late adjustments to divisions.

As if this wasn’t expected. I know of three clubs in that division at least that aren’t fielding lower grades at all. Some that are pretending that they have colts.

They need to rejig the comp then for the good of the competition. My understanding is clubs such as Newport, Lindfield and UNSW have close to 40 colts and they will essentially run a 4th grade of Colts to give everyone game time. If other teams dont have lower grades then its going to make for a debacle of a season and the sport will lose valuable players to the code as they drift away not getting a run. Head in the sand stuff from subbies as per usual.

It would be great if we could just judge where clubs will fit over the players they've got in FuseSport by end of January. Unfortunately life doesn't work like that, and draws need to be figured out as early as possible.

The change to COVID is going to get clubs in two ways: now that overseas travel is permitted, the young'uns in particular are going to flock there. Already happening for some of our preseason fixtures.

At the same time, back here you're going to get half a team per week probably kept away under isolation rules.

The guidance having an extra 20-30 players over the number of grades you fill is going to be put to the test.

Not many clubs in Division 2 will be able to field 4 grades. However there are two clubs in Division 4 who could field 4 grades (Epping and Redfield) but they won't let them into Division 2 as they don't have colts. Amateur Competition = Amateur Board.

You mean to say Redfield had 50 guys out for their trial last week?

Well, well, well…. How the mighty have fallen. The juggernaut that WAS Epping Rugby is no more.
My word from inside the Epping camp is that this is one big conspiracy at removing any rugby presence in the local area so that the premiership club moving on don’t have mud on their face.
I have heard a high up member of the Rams board also had several run ins with a member of the Subbies staff and judiciary, being cited as arrogant and considerably disliked.

how a club with over 70 registered grade players and now a colts side can end up in a two team comp is beyond the Woodsman.
When you consider that several clubs in division 2 will barely field two grades and colts in round 1 and there are other without fourth grade, it seems like the Subbies board have an agenda with the boys from Somerville Oval.

That was in the leadup when we were asked if we were available to play your 3s or 4s. Not sure how many actually fronted, but we got hit with COVID in any case :(
Unfortunately not what they turned up with. Maybe it was the rain…

Would love to know how everyone has been moving forward with training, given the recent (and upcoming) wet weather and council’s approach to closing grounds.

Our ground was closed for the last 3 weeks for oversowing - we were allocated some time on the junior league fields in the same precinct but only got 2 sessions with the rest washed out.

Both trials were effectively washed out as well with the uncertainty. I know a few clubs who haven't trialled.

Ground is back and in pretty bloody good shape. Good drainage and we're not subject to Council directly so dodging the worst of it as season starts.

The ground isn't the issue right now. The weather will be, with our annual charity match planned for Saturday.

Ground is definitely open this weekend, so our charity game can go ahead despite the forecast rain.

Reckon they'll close it tomorrow and Friday as there is still a lot of water to fall, but the ground is in pretty good shape. Just the non-playing surface is suffering due to a lack of proper drainage!

If you're in the area, come along and throw a bit of cash at our donation total for the day. It won't be as big an event as previous years, but it's Saturday, it's rugby, and it's ON.

Not looking good for many trial this weekend. Expect a lot of washouts.
Div 4 and below draw still not available?
