Sydney Subbies 2025

Excellent for the revival of St Ives - Would be a shame if this club ceased to exist.

In saying that - Is anyone actually watching the quality of these contests?

We were not expecting to make the move up to a tough division 4 competition after a few tough years in the lower divisions. Especially given that we were graded above clubs like Hawkesbury Valley, Harlequins, Western Raptors, Merrylands, Epping, Sydney Harbour etc. It was a clear sign from the board that they have complete faith in us, and what a decision it has been.

Sam Bowerman is still a gentlemen of the game and leading the boys well. I can't remember many players in my time who hit as hard as he does. Along with other senior guys like Benny 'mungo' Scott, Jarvo, Opey and Rusty Rod Chen (yes he still hasn't retired), we have a core group of experience in an otherwise young squad. We had 10 guys start on the weekend who were north of being born in 2000, and have a handful more on top of that. The vibes and energy is huge. Guys like Matty Abbott have just stepped in at 18 are leading the time around the field, but don't get me wrong, you open the space and he will take it and waltz right through. Then if it is not on, we have speed and skill in the backs, obviously everyone can see Pita Tuvusa is a class above.

There are tougher tests to come. Kings and Wakehurst are still to come, and while we nudged out Balmain, the return fixture at Leichhardt will be one that every subbies rugby enthusiast should be at.
