Sydney Subbies 2025

If that group photo of yours is in any way accurate - 22 players present and 22 absent, I reckon anything could happen ;)
I reckon that’s a pretty common trait for a lot of clubs in Subbies. At least 50% of your players unavailable for a variety of reasons each week. It’s one if the hardest things to do in Subbies is keep chasing those fringe guys each week. It’s so up and down.

Equally challenging is getting guys to back up for the next game ;)

It's at least good to know those who are regular absences e.g. we had someone who worked away every second week, but we knew that and could cater for it, and he mostly played 2nd Grade as a result.

We always aimed for a core 20 around First Grade, then the rest knew they were playing 2s.

Hopefully having a Colts next year alleviates some of the bench issues with Grade as well. In theory you should have at least 2 full benches for Grade when you've got Colts coming off the field. Fingers crossed!

Truth be told there’s probably another 22 that filled in which we didn’t name.

I’m still getting my head around numbers in subbies land

Speaking to a young chap on the weekend who is trialling with Gordon Colts. He said there were 150 trialling which surely cant be right but lets assume he is right. That represents is a spare second division subbies club on top of the 3 teams, plus reserves that they need for SS colts alone. When I ask why he wasn't considering one of the div 1 subbies clubs, his response was - I'll go to subbies when I play grade - which I thought was interesting. Perhaps SS colts culture is appealing to a youngster, but jeez its starving subbies of players.
The challenge is for the subbies clubs to make colts appealing.

Ignoring all the players that don’t make the cut. Gordon’s team sheets (like many others) have enough for a full team of grade, colts and womens sitting on the bench they even ran a 4s colts game towards the end of the year. More needs to be done to be forcing these clubs to push these players into Subbies to help fill holes even if it’s under the club banner.
These programs will continue to grow and numbers increase while the small Subbies Club near by can’t compete on the same scale.
It needs to come from NSW rugby to force clubs into this and supporting there local Subbies clubs. Then we need to look at where this colts are going if they don’t make the cut cause we all know they aren’t flooding into Subbies.

Of course! Why didn't I think of that? ;)

Classic Subbies… have a go at each other rather than the actual issue

I'm just having a bit of a laugh :)

I can't compete with Premier clubs in any capacity, so I'm relying on a bunch of mates deciding they want to have a crack together, and stapling them onto my existing U21 crop.

And THEN hoping enough of them don't have a birthday, music festival, hangover, or apathy on any given Saturday.
