Does this thread cover the Sydney Uni/Balmain Stars NRC team as well, or should a seperate thread be started for that?

Threads already started for the other NSW NRC franchises.

Round 3: West Harbour vs SUFC

This week's game sees all Grade and Colts teams out at Concord to take on West Harbour for the Round 3 Super Saturday fixture

West Harbour have had some strong games thus far this season, coming off a strong win against Penrith, and Head Coach Chris Malone has acknowledged the challenge the club faces this week, and has prepared his boys accordingly.

“West Harbour have electric backs, are marshalled well by a very experienced fly-half, and are one of the heavier packs in the competition. More than both teams we have played so far, this week there are multiple threats across the park.” said Malone.

MATCH REPORT | SUFC take home the White Ribbon Cup against Wests

14 Apr 2014
There were tries aplenty last Saturday at Concord Oval as Sydney University defeated the West Harbour Pirates 39-30 to take home the White Ribbon Cup in a super Saturday clash.
whiteribboncup.jpg
The SUFC boys with the White Ribbon Cup for another year
On one of those days where your mother has a dilemma whether to hang out the washing or not on the Hills hoist, University’s six tries were built from a solid scrum and enterprise by the fleet footed backline.
The swashbuckling Pirates were the first to score with a spectacular runaway try from their deceptive winger Nash Kamhara. Stung by the early try, University replied swiftly. The Students winger James Dargaville made a slashing run down the right wing and was supported by half back Jake Gordon who took the final inside pass to dart over in the northern corner. The unconverted try gave Wests a slender 7-5 lead.
Wests’ big forward pack was responsible for the Pirates extending their lead. Following a five metre scrum from the University tryline, Wests applied a series of picks and drives. A short ball for a hard running forward split the University defence and a converted try saw Wests ahead 17-5.
University ignored the driving rain and continued orchestrating another attacking raid. Managing to secure the ball inside the West Harbour 22 metre area, University decided to spread the ball to the right wing. Dargaville again was unstoppable down the blindside and received the ball before tip toeing over in the corner.
The remainder of the first half saw a see sawing scoreline as some spectacular tries were scored by both teams. Sydney rugby’s journeyman, Wests five eighth Dave Harvey, now treasuring a Pirates jersey to frame alongside numerous others for his man cave, gave his team a narrow lead of 27-26 from penalties at halftime.

A halftime fire side chat with the retired University captain Tim Davidson giving his thoughts on the game was the catalyst for University to draw first points early in the second half. Another judicious use of the blindside saw quick passing shift the ball to Dargaville who scored his second try. This was the big wingers last try before retiring due to a hamstring strain. A series of further penalties kicked by Harvey and replacement University winger Jon Vaux, saw University just ahead of Wests at 34-30 during the latter second half.
The Pirates did not capitulate and walk the gangplank. Everything was thrown at the Students and coupled with the judicious kicking of Harvey could have altered affairs in an instant.
University’s last try was something not extracted from the ARU coaching manual. Jake Gordon (pictured above) grubbered a ball inside his half for field position. A defending Wests winger was snookered alongside the western touchline with not a support in position. University’s Jon Vaux tackled the receiver and in desperation the Wests player passed over his shoulder oblivious to who was behind him. Gordon loomed on the inside and timed his interception perfectly to run away and score. Gordon’s try was unconverted and the final score in an entertaining game was 39-30 to the Students.
This final win for the day in First Grade resulted in wins across all grades for University.
Next week University hosts its first home game of the season against traditional rivals the big Manly Marlins.

Just had a quick look at last year's GF teams and 39 of the 65 players are not running around this weekend (9 from 4ths, 7 from 3rds, 7 from 2nds, and 16 from 1's - 4 reserves included). 14 are in super and 1 in 7's plus a couple of injuries leaves circa 20 guys that have left the club. Not many rugby clubs can survive that kind of exodus.

Any idea on where they have all gone?

How do Sydney Uni rate Jake Gordon? He must doing well for a young lad, and Syd Uni must rate him highly to be playing 1st grade against junior Aus players such as Merriman and Pulver and other good halfs such as Draper and Fong. Any reason he didn't feature in any Aus 20s consideration over the last few years?

Any idea on where they have all gone?

A bunch went on the UK trip and have now commenced FT work - assume they may have shifted to subbies (Knox, Mosman and the like). Some are still at Uni - go figure?

We are OK. The Coaching staff are very talented and look to play a form of rugby which relies on fitness and moving the ball at pace. They are coaching their teams to do this from third grade colts upward. They also make sure that set pieces are rock solid. Note the scrum against Pirates last week.
I am glad that we can keep playing awesome rugby, win or lose. Let's see what happens this weekend against Manly.

Donating a post. This weekend will have some cracking games of rugby being played from 4th grade up. The best of 3rd a Tier. Only downside is it's not a full home and away draw.
Weather gods look good.

Round 4: SUFC vs Manly

This weekend SUFC will host its first home game of the season against Manly, who currently sit on top of the Shute Shield table with three wins and three bonus point so far.
With both sides being undefeated, it is set to be a thrilling game, and Head Coach Chris Malone knows that Manly are a very strong opposition, and SUFC will need to perform at the top of their game to get the win.
"The 1st Grade side that we will encounter is the most experienced 1st Grade side in the competition. Big, fast, powerful, they will be a real handful" said Malone. "This is a true test of where we are at."

Round 4 Review - Marlins out edge Students in tight affair

By ‘Sideline Eye’

The Sydney University “Students” have suffered their first loss of the 2014 Season, going down 14 to 10 to the Manly “Marlins” in a tough contest at the birthplace of Australian Rugby.

Leading into the game, the Marlins had secured bonus point victories in the first three rounds of the competition and were always expected to prove a tough opponent for a young Student side. However, University can hold their heads high in a match that could have gone either way, being able to restrict a dangerous and experienced Manly outfit to only a couple of tries.

Although Sydney University were bolstered by the return of hard as nails open-side breakaway David Hickey and experienced fly-half Dan Kelly, a tough defensive attitude by Manly in the second half, and particularly late in the game, would prove the difference.

With the Students looking to play an expansive game early, and outside centre Jim Stewart looking dangerous out wide with every touch, it was Manly who were first to register points. At the 10 minute mark winger Alex Northam broke through the defence from well inside his own half and found an unmarked Matt Lucas who scored beside the posts. At 7-0 up, the Marlins had the upper-hand, however the Students refused to lie down and would go into the break with their noses in front. A penalty goal from Kelly was followed by an impressive try to James Dargaville. Noticing Manly were short on numbers out wide, University full-back Stuart Dunbar cut through to send Dargaville on his way. With the covering defence converging upon him, Dargaville stepped off his right foot to beat his man and although he momentarily lost his feet due to another collision, was able to compose himself and find the tryline. Up 10-7, it would be the last scoring play the Students would enjoy for the rest of the day.

They often say in tight contests, taking your opportunities is vital. With the Students enjoying a mountain of possession and field position in the first 10 minutes of the second half, had they been able to registering some points early in the second stanza to increase their slight advantage this may have been decisive in the context of the game (and a missed intercept chance by University replacement Henry Cluines-Ross later in the second half was costly). However it wasn’t to be. Having withstood the University pressure, Manly took the lead in the 51st minute through a converted try to No.10 Marshall Milroy and then withstood a series of storming raids in the last ten minutes to secure a tough victory. The 2 tries to 1 win means Manly retain their spot at the top of the Shute Shield ladder.

For the Students, it must be noted that despite the result their performance was much improved from the first few weeks of the competition. Leading the way up front were props Sam Talakai, who arguably turned in his best performance in the blue & gold hoops, and Rhys Brodie, who has made a habit lately of dominating the scrum contests. Skipper Tom Boidin was at his usual best and got through a huge amount of work, lock Tom Heslop was strong against a massive pack and Kelly steered the team around with composure.

In the lower Grades, Manly also defeated Sydney University 45-20 in 2nd Grade, with the Students winning 3rd Grade 34-30 and 4th Grade 19-7.

They also often say the measure of a team is how well they can bounce back after a defeat. Next up for Sydney University is a trip out to Rat Park to take on joint competition leaders Warringah. Another tough contest awaits.

Manly 14 (Matt Lucas, Marshall Milroy tries; Shaun Treweek, Scott Daruda cons) defeated Sydney University 10 (James Dargaville try; Dan Kelly con, pen).

Round 5: SUFC vs Warringah
This weekend it is out to Rat Park for our Grade sides to take on Warringah, a side that has showed some excellent form in First Grade so far this season, and Head Coach Chris Malone is well aware of this.
"The top of the table and high-flying Rats on ANZAC weekend will be a huge test down at Rat Park. They have had four straight bonus point wins and are full of confidence. As a team we have a big challenge ahead of us".
Our Colts will face Warringah at home, at St Paul's Oval, and having won all games so far in all three grades of their competition, our SUFC Colts are looking like a force to be reckoned with!
The First Grade game will be the ABC televised 'Match of the Day' and promises to be a great contest. So, even if you can't make it to Pittwater, show your support by watching from 3pm on ABC!
