One of the radio stations I was listening to either over the weekend or maybe it was this morning, mentioned that the Reds V CRusaders regular season game was foxtels high rating sports event of 2011 (i.e. higher than th league, AFL etc.)

Of course it was, can't read much into it. Super rugby being only available on Foxtel etc. The AFL/NRL GFs weren't on Foxtel live

The Wallabies dramatic Quarter Final triumph has delivered Australian subscription television its second highest rating program of all time behind the 2011 Super Rugby Final which attracted an average audience of 531,000 viewers.

The Wallabies-Springboks contest drew 25,000 more viewers than August's Tri Nations decider between the Wallabies and All Blacks (443,000).

The result has seen Rugby Union climb into the top three positions for highest rating programs on Australian subscription television.

Thanks BH. Interesting though that an S15 final with one Aus team still pulling more subscription viewers than a major Wallabies' match with all its national pizzazz in a heavily promoted RWC context. As WJ says, will be really interesting to see Foxtel's figures next Monday after this SF.

Wallaby ratings are split across FTA and PayTV, Super Rugby GF wasnt.

Why so low in Brisbane?
Is there some statistical reasoning regarding the definition of "metro"? Or do you guys all 'TV-pool' up there or something?

statistically speaking, Brisbane on a per-capita basis drew higher ratings then Sydney

TOCC, don't quite get you here. Which aggregated or 'split' other figures are you talking of? Do you reference the 807,000 figure below, which I thought was FTA only?

its done with a sample, Pay TV ratings can be exact, but they tend to do it by sample as well as sample usually leads to bigger ratings.

the thing with bathurst is, it depends on how the ratings where taken. if its during 5 minute samples and they take it during half time, alot of people might switch over thus making the sample size skewed. Its a whole industry of lies and deception and is often thousands and thousands out of actual viewers.

im not sure the wallaby game will do outstanding due to the timeslot, next sunday night will be the big litmus test, 730 sunday is the prime prime prime spot for any television show in this country, the number will reflect alot on where rugby stands in this nation.

like modern family?

I flicked across to 9 for about five minutes to get away from Marto's nonsence. Only lasted about 5 minutes there until THEY PLAYED AN ADVERTISMENT during the middle of the game. Immediately back to Foxtel. Stuff FTA. This is not AFL where there are 30 second gaps between goals and the next bounce.

I'll put up with Marto's antics to avoid ads any day.

why cant roy & hg call it: like frontline or the hollow men theyre better than the real thing

that 807'000 figure is indeed FTA figures.. but your previous comment about the Super Rugby GF drawing more then the Wallabies was a quote of subscription-tv figures only..

either way the same point can be made, wallaby and super rugby ratings on pay tv arent necessarily comparable since the wallabies area also broadcast on FTA.

Super Rugby GF on pay tv drew 530'000, the Wallaby RWC QF drew 440'000.. but if you add in the FTA ratings of 800'000, then the true figure of the RWC QF is 1.2million.

Take all those figures with a grain of salt though, agencies/statistics fluctuate depending on several factors, average audience versus peak audience and then there are other things like the companies who come up with the stat source from different sample markets.

Im still pretty disapointed by that figure consdering there was nothing else on, OK so the Bogans were all tuning into the broom brooms.
This week the loigue preceeds, should add on a few but again with no other sport it should be some of the best figures the sport has got

Yeah I agree. Disappointing figures and shows how badly rugby has fared with the wider community since the highs of the 2003 RWC. No other way of getting around that.

Better coverage on Ch 9 throughout the tournament would have helped, but I feel television networks' coverage of sporting events follows, rather than leads, wider interest in various sporting events.

rather then making broad assumptions about how the figures dont look good, i suggest you dive a little deeper, the reality is that the figures arent 'poor' by any means.. Surpassing the 2003 RWC figures was always going to be a stretch to far given the flow over publicty that the 2003 RWC had on Australian shores.

Agreed that there is always room for improvement and that the bigger the audience the better, but this endless drivel of how bad rugby has fared in recent years gets a little dreary considering there have been a few records set in 2011.

Peter McKay (motorsport reporter) stated in today's Sun Heralh that Bathurst averaged "...over 1.2m viewers nationally over seven hours, .....in the face of stiff competition from the Wallabies-Springboks World Cup game. The kick and clap started at 4pm, well before the end of the Bathurst race, adn managed 1.7m viewers in total (on Nine and Fox)."

I guess these figures mean something to someone, and are probably based on facts available to those "in the know".

Be interested in figures today for Mungoball vs Rugby tests.

Wallabies World Cup semi-final Sets Ratings Record

The Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup semi-final against the All Blacks in Auckland last night attracted a massive nationwide television audience of 3.234 million people – smashing the all-time Pay TV viewership record for Fox Sports and topping the free-to-air ratings on Channel Nine.

No Rugby match since the World Cup final in 2003 has delivered an audience of the same magnitude.

The tournament decider in Sydney eight years ago was watched by more than 4 million Australians.

The highest rating match since 2003 was a Test against England in 2006 which drew almost 1.9 million viewers.

In a direct comparison with 2003, there were 800,000 more people watching the Eden Park clash last night than watched the World Cup semi-final between the Wallabies and All Blacks in Sydney eight years ago.

Channel Nine’s free-to-air broadcast attracted 1.788 million people across the five capital cities with the match being the most watched program in Sydney (710,000), Brisbane (409,000) and Melbourne (376,000) and the second most watched in Adelaide (141,000).

Channel Nine’s coverage of the game dominated Sunday’s line-up with the Rugby World Cup semi-final ranking number one for the evening across key age demographics in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, including the 16-39 year-olds.

Regionally the trans-Tasman clash also attracted strong numbers with 727,000 tuning to watch the host nation progress to next Sunday’s final against France.

The semi-final was also the most watched program in Australian subscription television history.

Fox Sports’ coverage of the Wallabies v All Blacks Rugby World Cup semi-final attracted a record 719,000 viewers. The previous record was 531,000 for this year’s Super Rugby final between the Reds and Crusaders in Brisbane.

The audience last night surpassed that number by almost 40%.

Rugby has enjoyed strong television ratings in 2011 with the game now holding down the top four most watched programs in subscription television history – and all four programs are live broadcasts of matches played this year.

Last night’s semi-final, the 2011 Super Rugby final, the Wallabies Rugby World Cup quarter-final against the Springboks last week and this year’s Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations showdown with the All Blacks in Brisbane now hold positions No.1 to No.4 on the all-time subscription television ratings.

why arent people commenting on poor ratings now??????
