Any timetable of announcements of squads. Selection format etc

Or is just Gilmore and Thompson again

Europe already have named there squads and kiwis have named 100 man squad to begin testing

Is there plan in place??

Are you genuinely concerned there isn’t a plan in place? We had the U19RC just a month or so ago which was obviously a pretty important stage in the preparations for this squad. Even the Schoolboys and 18s Academy games.

I wouldn’t worry it too much. Europe have named squads because they have a tournament coming up.

When is it our turn to host the tournament? It’d do pretty well in Sydney
We'll get three years hosting in a row, only on the west coast, though. ;)

… It is understood international governing body World Rugby is looking to house the tournament in one country for three to five years rather than move it around the world on an annual basis.
This would assist in gaining sponsorship and make the competition more commercially viable. The move would help lift the profile of the game in WA on the back of billionaire Andrew Forrest’s Global Rapid Rugby …

It will require a modest amount of money, but that's not often in plentiful supply.

The first Junior Wallaby combined camp is set for mid Jan 2020. Not sure when the squad gets announced.

Any updates in this thread?? Camp must be coming up. I presume QLD stacked again. Gilmore and Thompson running the show?? 2018 aussie u18 side had a lot of NSW in it. Nationals saw NSW 1 v NSW 2.

The son of a friend of ours is going into camp in a few days, I think it might be for the under 20s. The problem is that it is supposed to be in the ACT, and that is not a particularly good venue at the moment. That might be why things are a bit quiet?

The first camp kicks off Jan 12 in Canberra .

Players have been contacted directly and “invited” to join rather than a squad formally announced.

Gilmore is head coach and basically in charge of this pathway.

The Australian U18 side that beat NZ last year were made up entirely of Academy players. Qld Red dominated the Academy games and ended up with a slight majority in the Australian team.

There will be some players from last year still eligible this year again for U20’s . Carlos Tizzano , who is now in the Waratahs set up originally from WA , would be a stand out for those that can possibly have another run.

They were together in December on the Gold Coast as well weren’t they Nomad?
Not that I’m aware of Adam , not as entire squad at least . May have had some players come together that were around from last year possibly.

I think you’re talking about the camp at TSS which was an U/18 National talent squad. AU selected about 40 players from across the country that they thought had potential. No particular team.

Ah yep, you’re correct it was the U18s not the U20s

It will be interesting to see the numbers at the first camp. QLD will probably have the majority. The one eligible player I would like to see there is Petaia but think he’ll stay with Reds the entire season. From the Reds core squad we should see Carter Gordon, from the extended squad we should see Tom Kibble. Obvious QLD Academy players - Josh Flook, Harry Vella, Creighton, Titi, Will Roach, Spencer Jeans, Zane Nonggor, Kalani Thomas, George Blake, George Gibson
Ex QLD - Byron Ralston, Reesjan Pasitoa, Dion Samuela, Zeph
Who else?

EDIT. Dion Samuela is with the Reds Academy. I was thinking of David Vaihu that has joined the Rebels Academy.

With Thompson and Gilmore running it. If history shows anything there will be more QLD than anyone else. Despite history of 2018 u 18 etc

Lol - it’s going so poorly that program!

NSW always forgets they played us a year older since time began.

Ever thought that the coach’s reputation is also on the line when these teams are announced?

Couldn’t imagine they would place picking players from their home state over putting the best possible team on the field. We are all pretty competitive buggers , I’m a proud Qlder , but if it was my professional coaching career being judged , I think I would want the best team possible out there .

Last year was Gilmore’s first full year in the role , ended up with the best result at a junior RWC in about 10 years , won an Oceania comp and he was hands on with the U18’s that beat NZ.

That’s not a bad start I reckon regardless of how many players you thought were hard done by come selection time.

Would you like to suggest who didn’t deserve to be there last year and who should have ?

Think you'll likely see Fourie, Fox, Dobbins, Downes & Tuqiri in Canberra. All have senior rugby experience which is important when the going gets tough
