Peter Sullivan (51)
uni vs moorabbin

after a very nice club house lunch and informative talk from guest speaker - Peter Leahy (Rebels Community Guy) which i will paraphrase - "grow the game" (read womens, 7's and schoolboy retention) and "improve the standard" (ie rebels in Dewar Shield, pathway development to retain the local talent and attract late developers from interstate), we got down to the main event.

uni got off to a flying start; early possession, territory and structured play leading to a 10 nil opening quarter. moorabbin looked very dangerous from broken play, especially the inside centre (Tuiatua) and winger (Joe Kamana). a moorabin try and a couple of penalties saw the visitors claw back level before the last 5 minutes of the half saw two tries to the rams, one from what appeared to be an obvious knock on, to lead 24 - 13 at the break.

a see-sawing second half saw the uni team score twice to close the gap to 3 points, but the rams set piece began to dominate with the students (hardly any anymore ?) messing up 3 lineouts in a row and then conceding a tight head. further scrum pressure from the rams resulted in turnovers from under pressure kicking. despite this the uni attacked for the remaining few minutes of the half but couldn't convert the possession and territory into points.

a good game and pretty good skills from both teams on show. standing on the sidelines i am very glad i am long retired, these are very big blokes playing now! Moorabbin certainly very powerful scrum and open field running and support play, contrasting against a more structured game plan from the Uni side.

for the Uni side fullback, Cowley; young winger, Leota; Brendan Westney off the bench and tyro prop Ferretti Sa'aga impressed me. Rebels hooker Steve Fualau showed his class before limping off in the second half.

in the earlier games (Colts, twos and threes) the Uni teams very comfortably accounted for the Moorabbin sides

ps the Uni cheerleaders were a treat, almost as good as the Rebels girls. Uncle Max is coming again for next home match:D

So did anyone work out happened to Max Lahiff on the weekend? Did he line up for the rams? Haven't seen him on the injured list.

come and enjoy,
Thanks swingpass - you know, we might just see if we can fill a table. I think one of our group works in Melbourne with a Uni player. I'll keep an eye on the details. (managed to get advance tickets to the test match by simply typing in the code word, 'Foundation' in case anyone wants to get in before the great unwashed.

FOOTSCRAY 5 def by HARLEQUIN 19 - Henry Turner South Reserve, Cnr Farnsworth Ave & Myers Rd
Harlequin have returned to the winners list in Round Four with a comfortable win over Footscray, a side who have struggled to get off the ground so far in 2014.
Harlequin's defensive pressure was dominant in the match, denying Footscray of much needed scoring opportunities.
Quins fielded a young squad, with three Melbourne Rebels Under 20s making their first grade debuts, with scrumhalf Rian Olivier in the starting XV, and Ta Hosea and Angus Arundel making their maiden Dewar Shield appearances off the bench.
Footscray Head Coach Nic Henderson blamed missed opportunities and a high turnover rate for his side's fourth loss of the season.
"We failed to take our opportunities in attack with too many errors in attacking zones leading to turnovers. We didn't manage to build consistent pressure and therefore failed to score points even though we had the lion's share of possession.
"Stan Ili worked very hard for us at fullback and provided some spark in attack with plenty of cutting runs on counter attack and phase. His positioning and communication with the back three was very important in shoring up our defence against a very good Harlequins backline."
Harlequin can now look forward to a two weeks off, with the Easter break followed by the bye in Round Five. Footscray will be using the extra week to prepare for a very important match against fellow winless side, Power House.
Footscray 5 Tries: Josh Nuauamo. Conversions: nil. Penalties: nil.
Harlequin 19 Tries: Panapasa Ravouvou, Josh Meads, Landres Tekahu. Conversions: Lloyd Johansson (2). Penalties: nil.
MELBOURNE 14 def ENDEAVOUR HILLS 8 - Romanis Reserve, Orrong Rd, Prahran
The Unicorns have recorded a tight win against Endeavour Hills at home in Round Four, with both sides producing mixed results for fat this season.
Endeavour Hills started the season with an emphatic win over Power House, however have struggled to fire in recent weeks. Melbourne was comprehensively beaten in Round One by Harlequin, and have slowly been building as the season progresses.
It was a relatively even contest, with both sides scoring a try apiece, with the boot of Unicorns' flyhalf Paul McConnachie proving the difference, maximising from Endeavour Hill's mistakes with three penalty goals.
Unicorns' Head Coach Ellis Meachen was impressed with his side's first half performance, however was disappointed with their inability to put the game out of reach for Endeavour Hills.
"We played into the wind during the first half, playing some attractive Rugby, making good linebreaks. Jordy Reid was again solid for us, and we had some great consistency from loose forwards Tim Emery and Freddie Austin.
"Endeavour Hills were very strong from broken play, and some inaccurate option taking meant the game was close in the second half. We were threatening in the second half, but unable to finish Endeavour Hills off, keeping them in the game."
In Round Five, Melbourne will host Melbourne University, while Endeavour Hills will be looking to get their names back on the winners list, hosting Southern Districts.
Melbourne 14 Tries: Simione Eliega. Conversions: nil. Penalties: Paul McConnachie (3)
Endeavour Hills 5 Tries: Andy Brown-Molimau. Conversions: nil. Penalties Andy Brown-Molimau.
BOX HILL 45 def SOUTHERN DISTRICTS 34 - RHL Sparks Reserve, Cnr Middleborough & Canterbury Rd, Box Hill
Box Hill have continued their winning streak in Round Four, in another high scoring match against Southern Districts at their home base, Sparks Reserve.
Box Hill's attack has been firing in recent weeks, with Melbourne University the only side to defeat the rampant Broncos by a narrow margin in Round One.
Southern Districts, who are yet to record a win in 2014, have once again been highly competitive however are still unable to make the most of their opportunities and earn a victory.
Pirates' Head Coach Ross Sanders was weary of the Box Hill attack, preparing his side for a fast paced game, but was disappointed with his side's ability to defend against the Bronco's elusive backs.
"We were very conscious of the fact that Box Hill would want to play a high tempo, open running game and talked at length about the need to retain possession for long periods of time, which we were able to do for the majority resulting in 6 tries. What was most disappointing was that we discussed the importance of transitioning from attack to defence when we turned possession over however it was on these occasions that Box Hill punished us.
"Malofou Feterika playing in the midfield for the first time this season challenged the defence on a number of occasions with clever footwork and powerful runs whilst in the forwards, veteran Teariki Daymond, coming off the bench at halftime injected some life into the team with a high work rate and some strong ball carries."
Dan Maea, an assistant coach for the Broncos was pleased with his team's leadership and consistency, while also braising another solid performance from Rebel's scrumhalf Ben Meehan.
"Ben put on another great display for Box Hill this weekend; once again he had a major role in creating a try out wide which allowed Box Hill to take the lead in the 1st half. His ability to read play and connect on his passes has been a major feature for us. Ben's professionalism and attitude has certainly been a major factor and we look forward to what he can bring to our next match.
"Our captain Sione Puamau put on another strong performance and led from the front, he continued to have great support from his forward pack, despite injuries to key players. Ratu Rokotunaceva and Teo Fudakowski were great in both attack and defence this week, we also had great impact off the bench from Adam Lewis returning to first Grade and Sawani Saunitoga whose performance and bullish try was inspirational."
Box Hill will host the undefeated Moorabbin in Round Five, while Southern Districts will be looking to record their first win of the season against Endeavour Hills.
Box Hill 45 Tries: Save Waqalutu (2), Sefanaia Naivalu (2), Ratu Rokotunaceva, Filipe Koroibola, Sowani Saunitoba. Conversions: Sefanaia Naivalu (5). Penalties: nil
Southern Districts 34 Tries: Jarrod Eberhart, Dayne Hillier-Wilkinson, Junior Tuala, Gasa Tia Tia, Heine McFarland, Sean Mehrtens. Conversions: Jarrod Dowie (2). Penalties: nil.
MELBOURNE UNI 27 def by MOORABBIN 30 - HG Smith Oval, Macarthur Rd, Parkville
Moorabbin are the only undefeated side left in the competition, after holding off immense second half pressure from Melbourne University, to claim a thrilling 27-30 victory.
Both sides came into the match undefeated, setting up an exciting afternoon of Rugby. University were the first side to break through, scoring the opening two tries, however a firing 20 minutes of play from the Rams saw them take a comfortable 13-24 lead at half time.
Melbourne University continued to apply the heat during the second half to come within three points of the visitor's, however mistakes at the line-out and strong defence from the Rams prevented the Students from claiming top spot on the ladder.
University Head Coach Jason Jones was pleased with his side's performance, but rued careless mistakes made by the team late in the match.
"It wasvery tight tussle which befitted a top of the table clash in front a fantastic crowd. Our forwards appeared to edge the big Rams forwards for most of the game but some substitutions late in the game tilted the game back the Rams favour. At the end of the day, an opportunistic charge down try off a sloppy restart for the Students was probably the difference.
"Steve Fualau played another solid game, carrying ball with vigour and excellent execution at the set piece. 2013 Australian Schoolboys representative Fereti Sa'aga was our player of the day, scoring two tries, carrying the ball tirelessly for the full 80 minutes. Craig Cowley was also strong at fullback with a great defensive game and lots of confidence."
Melbourne Rebels Under 20s representative Pat Toeta once again had a strong game for the Rams, while Hooker Patrick Tauati was also prominent for the winning side.
Moorabbin will battle the on fire Box Hill Broncos in Round Five, while Melbourne University will clash with inner city rivals the Melbourne Unicorns.
Melbourne University 27 Tries: Fereti Sa'aga (2), Matthew Onesemo, James Nettleton. Penalties: James Nettleton (2). Conversions: James Nettleton. Penalties: nil
Moorabbin 30 Tries: Motusaga Ese, Lualua Vailoaloa, Patolo Toeta, Neli Sasulu. Conversions: Paul Tuia (2). Penalties: Paul Tuia (2)

Certainly interesting but I expect in due time to see Melb, Quins, and Moorabin take the top 3 in some order with Uni, EHills, and BHill (and Souths if they sort their shit) fighting for position 4.

It's a shame really, 2013 is looking like the first year in a while that 5 or 6 teams deserve to play finals.

The game on the 26th is looking like a good one, Box Hill v Moorabbin. Box Hill seem to be playing a style of rugby that Souths have done a few times. The theory being, we don't care how many points you score as we will score more.

It all depends on how long Uni and BH can keep the good form going, Uni were very unlucky to lose to Moorabbin the other week apparently.

2013 or 2014?

Interesting comment none the less in that for the past few years a decent team has missed out on the finals, last year House snuck in and Souths (2010 GF, 2011/12 semi) missed out. The year before Box Hill (2011 semis) missed out and Footscray snuck in....from memory it was by a matter of points in both years.

Lots of good match ups this weekend.

Box Hill v Moorabbin - 1v2 on the table, both teams are really good at “broken” rugby and I reckon it will be end to end stuff. Box Hill’s mantra seems to be “we don’t care how many points you score, we will score more” and Moorabbin tend to score a few points themselves.
Fooscray v Power House – both teams are struggling this year, however I reckon this should be a good game. Footscray are also having their 1st ever Ladies day.
Melbourne v Uni – 3 v 5 on the ladder, Uni pushed Moorabbin really close the other day and I reckon they will push an out of sorts Melbourne side to the limit.
Endevour v Souths – once again both sides like the unstructured rugby and Souths have been unlucky in their games from all reports. Endeavour started well with a big win against House but have struggled since then, they should’ve beaten Melbourne apparently but they seem to lack that killer instinct that the good sides have. I reckon that is going to be a cracker as well.

All in all I don’t think there is going to be a bad game this weekend, they are all evenly matched sides going against each other. Should be a good weekend to get out and watch some rugby.

In a record-breaking move, this weekend a whopping twelve RaboDirect Rebels will turn out for their local Dewar Shield Clubs.
It's the largest number of Rebels playing in Victoria's Premier Club competition since the Super Rugby franchise's inception, and has come about as a result of the Club insisting that all available Rebels will play their Club Rugby locally in the 2014 season.
In previous years, Rebels players returned to their home states to play their Club Rugby, however in a concerted push to help grow the game in Victoria as well as strengthen community ties not only will available Rebels feature in the Dewar Shield but those unavailable will be there to watch while the Club enjoys a Super Rugby bye. Sam Jeffries, Telusa Veainu and Jack Debreczeni return from injury and will be looking to put in big performances as they look to force their way into the Rebels' matchday 23.
The majority of Rebels players have enjoyed some relaxation time this week during the bye, with only a few remaining at the Club to either work on their rehabilitation from injury or prepare for an impending return this weekend, while Lalakai Foketi has been with the Australian U20 squad on the Gold Coast. Full training for the Club resumes this Sunday.
Get down to support local Rugby this weekend and introduce yourself to your favourite Rebels players as they 'get vocal at their local'. Check the website later today for the Club coaches' recommended players to watch in all matches, and then check back on Saturday morning for full team listings.
NB: With Harlequin Rugby Club fixtured a bye in the Dewar Shield this weekend, their allocated players will attend the Xavier College Rugby Sevens on Saturday morning.

Glad to see the broncos with a few rebels and even happier to see they are travelling better this year. Think seine mentioned they got a few players from northern, they always seem to have good supply of talent. Glad to see max getting some pitch time too, seems to have been absent for a few weeks.v just wish he was wearing the red, white and blue.

DEWAR SHIELD PREVIEW - ROUND FIVE, 2014

Head Coaches provide their 'Players to Watch' ahead of another fascinating round in Victoria's Premier Club Rugby competition.
It's a record-breaking round of Dewar Shield action, with no less than twelve Rebels lining up to play as the Club enjoys a bye in the Super Rugby competition.
There are some cracking matches on this weekend, and with all Rebels players either playing or in attendance cheering on their teammates and allocated Clubs, there's no better time to 'get vocal at your local'.
Box Hill vs. Moorabbin:
A top of the table clash here sees undefeated Moorabbin travel to Box Hill to take on a side that has scored an average of 45 points per game. The Broncos' turnaround from last season, when they failed to win a game and collected the wooden spoon, has been incredible and credit must go not only to the players but also to Head Coach Andrew Slyfield. Their attitude appears to be along the lines of 'whatever you score, we'll score more'. The Rams, meanwhile, were disappointed not to qualify for last season's Grand Final and have started this year in angry and determined fashion. Scrumhalf Ben Meehan again lines up for Box Hill while playmaker Angus Roberts makes his first Dewar appearance of the season, while prop Max Lahiff will make his long-awaited Dewar Shield debut for Moorabbin after moving to the Rebels from London Irish for the 2014 season.
Players to watch - Box Hill:
"Drew Collins brings a wide range of skills to the forward pack for Box Hill this season. Due to his ability, Drew actually played in the backs last season but this year his skill set has helped Box Hill to play a wide and expansive game as many of the players' roles interchange throughout each match.
"Sowani Saunitoga has been making a great impact off the bench this year for Box Hill in the loose forwards. He is always a consistent threat around rucks, as he is always looking for an opportunity to make a turnover and is always near the ball when Box Hill swings into attack. Last week Sowani showed what he is capable of with ball in hand when he scored an amazing individual try. It won't be long before we see Sowani starting for Box Hill." (Andrew Slyfield, Head Coach Box Hill)
Players to watch - Moorabbin:
"A quiet achiever, blindside flanker Simon Brown has just been going about his business. He is a reliable player who understands his role well and has stepped up to another level this season. He has been a consistent contributor to the Moorabbin loose trio thus far and his level head will be required again this Saturday against a Box Hill team brimming with confidence.
"Winger Ioane Perenise is well known for his speed. This will be handy in a game that will no doubt be full of attacking and counter attacking from both sides. His combination with Joe Kamana (fullback) and Malo Young-Yen (wing) has been lethal and a long-standing one. Ioane will be hoping for some open pastures and if given the opportunity he'll know what to do with it." (Ben Perenise, Head Coach Moorabbin)
Footscray vs. Power House:
Both sides are struggling and winless thus far, after qualifying for the finals in 2013. A massive game for both, with Power House determined to replicate the defensive form they showed when keeping defending champions Harlequin to 20 points in a Round Two defeat by just two points. Their other two matches, against Box Hill and Endeavour Hills, have seen their opponents rack up cricket scores; they're capable, but need to find some consistency. For the Doggies, who also celebrate their inaugural ladies day, they need to find their way to the try line; five-pointers have been hard to come by in comparison to the other teams in the competition. Cruze Ah-Nau and Cadeyrn Neville turn out for Footscray after playing big parts in the Rebels' Round Ten victory over the Western Force, while Tom Kingston makes his Dewar Shield debut for Power House alongside former Brumby Tom Cox in the outside backs. Paul Alo-Emile will play his first Dewar Shield game of the season as well.
Players to watch - Footscray:
"Hillz Tumaalii has been consistently performing well in 2nd grade up until a few weeks ago, when he was given an opportunity to start at No. 8 for us. He has grown with each game and has been a very solid performer the last few weeks. Strong ball carries and rock solid defence are the cornerstones of a No. 8's game, and Hillz brings all of those. His challenge is to do this for a full 80 minutes going forward.
"Ikuna Tukuafu has put on considerable size and strength through his involvement with Elite Sports Performance during pre-season and has shown real maturity with his game the last few rounds. He has a real appreciation for lineout calling and has combined a high work rate in tight with an effective running game. We'll be looking for him to increase his physicality in games moving forward." (Nic Henderson, Head Coach Footscray)
Players to watch - Power House: Not provided
Melbourne vs. Melbourne Uni
Both sides have tasted defeat just once thus far in 2014, and will fancy their chances here. Uni pushed Moorabbin all the way in Round Four, and will be hoping that the form which also delivered them wins against Box Hill and Southern Districts hasn't been disrupted by the week off. For the Unicorns, it's three wins on the trot after being thoroughly outplayed in their Grand Final replay against Quins in Round One, though they would be the first to admit that they have yet to reach the heights of their 2013 season. Scratchy wins against struggling sides have done the job thus far, and good teams like Melbourne find ways to win even when not at their best, but a step up in class here will see them need to be on their game. Jordy Reid again starts for Unicorns, while Telusa Veainu returns from a broken thumb to play his first Dewar Shield game. For Uni, Rebels' lock Sam Jeffries will make his long-awaited return from a facial injury, but hooker Steve Fualau is a notable absentee.
Players to watch - Melbourne:
"Karl Belemi will direct the Unicorns pack around the field this week in an effort to control the big Uni pack. His speed around fringes will ensure go forward ball is well used.
"Tumai Edwards should make his first appearance this year for the Unicorns with an injury keeping the well performed Paul McConnichie on the sidelines this week." (Ellis Meachen, Head Coach Melbourne Unicorns)
Players to watch - Melbourne Uni:
"Ryan O'Sullivan is a wiry backrower who punches well above his weight. He is extremely mobile and gives us the flexibility to play virtually 2 openside flankers in our backrow. Ryan is a very smart footballer, who loves the contact element of the game. Ryan has added 5 kg to his frame over the off season and it has definitely shown over the opening few rounds.
"Jarom Halo will be making his Dewar Shield debut this weekend after just returning from playing for Tonga in the Junior (U20) World Cup Tournament in Hong Kong. He already looks a more confident player at training and will bring great spark and punch into the student backline. Jarom is an excitement machine who all Rugby supporters will enjoy watching this season." (Jason Jones, Head Coach Melbourne Uni)
Endeavour Hills vs. Southern Districts:
Hills started the season with a bang, crushing Power House by 35 points in Round One, however narrow losses to Moorabbin and Melbourne have seen them return from the week off 1-2. Southern Districts, meanwhile, have been desperately unlucky not to collect a victory in 2014, with their three losses coming via a combined tally of fifteen points. This shapes as a crucial match for both Clubs, who harbour genuine finals ambitions in 2014. Flyhalf Jack Debreczeni will play his first match in the competition after recovering from a knee injury sustained during a trial game with Endeavour Hills, while Tongan international Eddie Aholelei will also play for Hills.
Players to watch - Endeavour Hills:
"Scrumhalf Junior Paila was our 2013 Player of the Year, and we are still setting him challenges. His big challenge this week is to control his forwards so we can hopefully recycle ball more efficiently. Our Captain, this week will be huge for him.
"Number 8 Reuben Rolleston is in his first season at the Club after playing in the past with Southern Districts. It's always a challenge when playing against your old team. He is the fittest forward at Endeavour Hills, and this shows in his work rate around the paddock. We're expecting a big game from Reuben and I have set some tough goals for him." (John Eden, Head Coach Endeavour Hills)
Players to watch - Southern Districts:
"Glen Salter enters his second full season of senior Rugby knowing that every week he is competing for a starting position. South African born, 'Salts' is not afraid of hard work and has shown a steely determination to overcome a serious neck injury and major knee surgery that kept him sidelined for two entire seasons. A high work rate hooker who can also play openside, he's a model trainer who sets the standard with his attention to detail and consistently high training efforts. Having just turned 21 Glen has plenty of quality rugby ahead - another junior Pirate progressing to the senior ranks.
"Jarrod Dowie is another 21 year old who has an abundance of talent and a bright future. With some standout performances in VRU 7's & 10's tournaments in 2011/12, Jarrod got his first taste of senior footy at the age of 19. A flyhalf, Jarrod has good transfer skills and the ability to hold up a pass and time the offload to perfection. He's not afraid to challenge the line with clever footwork and he has demonstrated kicking competency both left and right. Jarrod still has plenty to work on if he is to be regarded as one of the leading flyhalfs in the competition, but what's most important is that Jarrod knows that." (Ross Sanders, Head Coach Southern Districts)

We’re a group of 8 heading down to Melbourne for the Test vs France. My thirsty chums and are looking for a rugby lunch to attend earlier that day. It doesn’t have to be a schmick one and we’d be happy to attend one at a clubhouse or similar.
Anyone know of any lunches on that day?

Power House usually have one on as well, located at Albert Park which is in bewtween the city and St Kilda...

Went down to the Box Hill game, Moorabbin got a red in the first 5 and still almost won.

Missed opportunity for BH who played their hearts out and had some special players but you always got the sense they were just holding on.
