Wallabies 2025 Spring Tour

jeez thats light on on 10s

I assume Donaldson or Lynagh will be called in
Unclear at this stage, but Donaldson wasn't named amongst the other Aus A players called up (Matt Faessler, Josh Canham, Pete Samu, and Hamish Stewart).

From the article:
However, the big surprises come in the halves, with Tom Lynagh and Ben Donaldson joining O’Connor as major omissions from the main squad, the latter included in the Australia A side and the former still under a cloud of injury concerns.

Noah Lolesio was also considered for selection but was unavailable due to injury. Instead, his rival Carter Gordon will come straight into the squad fresh from signing for the Queensland Reds after two years in the NRL, joining Tane Edmed as the fly-half options for Schmidt.
...
“We’ve taken a long-term view with Tom Lynagh, who is still just 22 years old. He has had a few injury frustrations since the third test versus the Lions in early August and will follow an individualised program, guided by both Wallabies and Queensland staff, which will allow him to recover to full fitness.

Lynagh and Lolesio listed as unavailable due to injury.

My guess is they would rather Donaldson than JOC (James O'Connor) from a longer term perspective but he probably needs to play the house down this weekend, so they're seeing how that plays out.

I think this means we're pretty much guaranteed to see Carter in the 23, at least for that first game against Japan. I imagine Paisami and Stewart will then be looked at as the squad coverage 10s, while everyone is otherwise fit.

I'm not sure Carter would be rushed straight in that quickly - because it's the Wallabies, what will happen is they'll name Stewart on the bench as 'break glass' #10 coverage, Edmed will go down in the first 2 minutes and we will lose to Japan by a point.

Seems unlikely that Stewart will be the preferred/conservative option as 10 coverage there, if Schmidt was that worried about playing Gordon straight up against Japan he would've called Donaldson in like a bunch of the other Australia A players.

It was a bit tongue in cheek - more realistically they probably do intend to put Gordon on the bench (considering it's Japan) but if they discover at training this week that he's not quite up to speed they can always keep Donaldson in Japan for the week, I wouldn't be surprised if they do that anyway even if not announced as part of the squad.

Interesting that Tupou and Bell are still with the squad and not with R92 and Munster respectively.
Bell is a proper sabbatical (as opposed to Ikitau who has signed a quick season away between deals), so I imagine he was never going to be released until after the EOYT was done. Tupou is a bit more interesting, but it's probably just the Racing didn't want to buy out the last ~month or so of his deal when he was going to be called in for 3 weeks test duty (and is on a monster salary).

Joe sees Edmed as the future with the new messiah 10 returning to save us as well.. Gee whiz... he's a good coach but not sure about this..Reckon Eddie will be have been planning for an upset!

Not sure the Aus A guys will back up straight away having not been with the squad, at least in starting roles. The Italy test might be where a few more of those 1st picks get a break as a result, particularly with at least a few of Ikitau, O'Connor, Skelton and Hooper to be available.
