Is that 5 or 6 failed HIAs between two of our main #10 candidates in the last 4 months?

At what point does there start to be a broader conversation about what we are doing about brain injuries in this sport?
Man and it didn't look like that bad of a hit.. hopefully can go to Japan and have a bit of a less physical game

Yeah, it's easily the worst for Lynagh and Lolesio, but it feels like it has been a pretty high number of concussions for 10s in general this year.

I think we need to be having serious conversations about a) loading towards bans for high tackles that don't merit a red, and b) potentially rolling out the sternum height tackle laws at higher levels.

Simply put, it’s a huge concern for contact sports in general but not one league is ready to take big enough steps to really change things.

There were 4 HIA protocols in one NRL game last night, two of them resulted in players missing nearly the entire game. I think we will see the kick off rules changed in NRL next year to stop players running off the back fence.

Sporting bodies are trying to navigate things but it’s really just being done by monitoring and keeping players out of games. There is serious concerns about contact sports long term viability in the next decade.

It’s actually why I find it interesting that Sevens hasn’t been given more of a push recently. I know RA and the NRL had a joint taskforce looking at Sevens and Nines and the lessened concussion issues due to less contact in play.

How many of those 6 HIAs were from illegal high tackles?

I have come to the point now where I think the only real option is to take the stand down periods more seriously.

From a duty of care perspective I think we should probably not be selecting Lolesio or Lynagh for the Lions series, and probably more test matches after that.*

* I acknowledge I don't know what I'm talking about here, and presumably Lynagh and Lolesio are getting the best clinical care money can buy.

With that said - here is the strand down periods for any combat sport in Victoria

I would like to get a breakdown of how these concussions are happening. Lowering the body height just feels like your asking for more head trauma to the tackler.

Agree on Frost, for his glimpses of athleticism he doesn’t deliver consistently enough on the work in tight and physicality that you want from a test lock. I’d say Canham is currently on a similar trajectory as well.

I find Frost enigmatic. In most respects his physicality is one of the attributes that makes him such a good player. But there are times he just missed tackles he should make. Don’t really get it because the whole Brumbies system is based around players doing their core jobs well.

On a similiar note I don’t really understand why Swain & Smith didn’t get more of a crack last year. I know people have a crack at Swain discipline but he seems to have really improved that area.

I’ve said before that I think lock is the hardest position to judge from the cheap seats so I’m sure there is sound reasoning. It’s just not obvious to me.

He was in Australia A last year - so not like he is completely out of the system. I wouldn’t be disappointed to see him jump up the pecking order a bit.

Swain and Williams are the best locks we have after Skelton. Agree on Frost, he isn’t good enough in the loose to make up for how poor he is in the tight

Swain’s lineout ability could be sorely needed vs the Lions
