Wallabies 2025

We are building something special let’s just hope it lasts. Imagine winning the rugby championship after SA and NZ have decided to can it every other year to have full tours thinking they are too good for us.

They say the pride comes before the fall and that was evident at Elis Park

They have to release him for the rugby championship
They do, but that's not inclusive of rest weeks, they'd be entitled to his services for the weeks of 25/08 and 15/09, which is where negotiations or hardlining would come in to try and prevent him from spending 30 hours in transit twice in a week, with a game inbetween.

Actually, northern hemisphere club players released for the rugby championship aren't required to be sent back to their clubs for rest weeks and can be held in camp for the entire 8 week window.

Whether or not the player agrees to that (and what behind the scenes pressure the club puts on them) is a different story.

This is a very good change. The old system of having to fly them back in rest weeks was nonsensical.

I wonder if there'll be a compromise for Skelton staying longer? He could give up the EOYT games (which if he had to give something up would be a good swap for the Wallabies).

It would be interesting to really understand what sort of financial loss he is taking by playing these games. There's certainly an argument that there's a reputational benefit to be had which will result in future financial gains. While Skelton has had a high profile in the game for years, the two Lions tests have undoubtedly re-asserted and increased that reputation/profile.

I think we're benefitting from Ronan O'Gara being his coach too. Also an expat in France, was the commentator for NH of the Lions tour so was acutely aware of Skelton's impact, value and emotional benefit from Wallabies. If it were Jean-Francois Le Petit instead, I don't know if he'd give a fuck about some English speaking player wanting to represent his nation.

It's a good clause in and of itself, but I'm not sure how much of a change it is - it's been in place since at least 2016, and I can't find a copy of the regulations from before then (basically the IRB period). I can only imagine the flying back and forth was to do with pressure clubs put on the players to return.

The limit (for Rugby Championship Unions) is 12 matches per year - 3 for the July window, 6 for the Rugby championship window and 3 for the EOYT window
