Sydney Morning Herald says Lolesio flew up to Brisbane to see a specialist on Monday and had spinal fusion surgery on Tuesday. Scary stuff, wish him all the best. Wouldn't fault him for calling it a career, but if he continues on with rugby I think it makes it more likely he stays in Japan for the rest of his playing time and earns his worth while he still can.

Nah, 2023 was the other young 10 who didn't re-resign with Australian rugby and then had a spinal injury

I'd say there is a decent chance the japanese club will cancel his contract on medical grounds

If there were guaranteed better players to select from overseas to play in the Lions series there's no doubt they would've been drafted in...

But I think there's some mythological status being applied to some of those names being thrown around, based on little actual playing form in recent years.
You're not really making sense here. The point of the conversation was why pick him if he's had 2 serious injury scares in 2 months, not who's the best 10.

I've made this exact point many times before - but we're not talking about calling them back because they are better than what we have at home, we're talking about calling them back as injury cover because what we have at home is broken.

If Lynagh is confirmed out, and Joe wants 3 10s in the squad like he had at the start - we're gonna need one of them.

Aside from Tom Hooper at 7, I generally wouldn't be unhappy to see that side run out for a test. Certainly not the best we could put out right now, but not crisis level either. Biggest issue at the time was all the chaos in coaching behind it and inconsistency of selection leading up to it.

Current day Wales (who have only one more test after that match) would be terrified by it.

Yeah all you need to do is watch our failed lineout in the first stages of the game to realise how shithouse our prep must have been.

Well all those people who have been deriding Lolesio all year will now get their wish. I for one think this hurts our prospects of winning the series.

In terms of who to add to the squad, I'd much prefer JOC (James O'Connor) over Edmed.

I’d say that wasn’t really the point of the conversation based on a series of posts you and others made in the previous pages, and it’s completely disingenuous to now suggest that you were just concerned about his well being this whole time…

I’m grateful Schmidt gave lynagh a few caps last year. In hindsight I wish he’d managed to get more!
First test in Brisbane. He should be comfortable playing at Suncorp.

It's going to be tough for whomever comes in to the 10 jersey just with the lack of gametime they would have had running the cutter for the team. Joe does love his combos so I'd guess if McDermott is is a finisher than Lynagh very well may be too with Gordon and Donaldson starting

I'd personally bring Edmed in as the 3rd 10. He went away on the end of year tour so he's up speed more so than O'Connor and he didn't just become a bad player overnight. Felt like he just didn't mesh with what McKellar wanted but his game suits Schmidt a lot more

Man come on. A lot of people had a crack at him, including me around his comments around leaving Aus. But ffs nobody actually wanted to see him succumb to serious injury.

I'd be bringing both Edmed and O'Connor in to be honest. I don't have much faith in Edmed as ready for test rugby but he does have that exposure and some combination with Gordon (though they've always looked an unnatural pairing to me). While O'Connor has less exposure to the squad (though he has been in fairly regular contact with Schmidt as far as I'm aware) he has a solid existing combination with Tate who he'd most likely partner form the bench. More importantly he is an experienced head to have around the squad to help what is otherwise a young and inexperienced crop.

It sounds like it's a larger squad, so it makes sense to use one of the extra spaces in what is now a problem position, particularly with O'Connor capable of filling in just about anywhere in the back line, at least in training.

What's disingenuous is your attempt to conflate valid criticism of a player with not caring about his wellbeing after watching him be stretchered off twice in a month

Hmm I’d be tempted to leave donno on the bench for his ability to cover 15.
Fuck it we’re probably gonna lose now so I’d throw lynagh in there to start. He’s 22, but what a storyline to drive up interest. And I know exactly what I’m gonna get from him. Basic backline organisation, a long boot (accurate too, can’t recall the last time he put a ball dead when going for a lineout) and he’ll kick his goals. He’ll be brave in defence (probably need to hide him at the back) and he’ll be a HIA watch when he’s out there.
