Wallabies 2026

None of those five are particularly convincing save for Brial.
It's more about the potential gaps then anything - other positions (aside form the ones Christy listed) are pretty well covered by already capped players. There's plenty of returning pros and guys on a handful of caps who are going to be pushing for their shot too - Fainga'a, Phillip, Swain, Petaia, etc.

But it's also all speculation at this point - one big season next year in super can easily rocket someone into contention, and one bad injury can flip the whole script.

Yeah, if Debreczeni is going to get a shot it has to be pretty much immediately, but I don't think there's much benefit to us adding another debutante 10 to the mix, at least not one over 30. Lomax seems like a bit of stretch while he's still unsigned too.

The alternatives I think might make that next 5 are Mac Grealy, David Feliuai (but if he does it would be instead of Pakeho), and one of Joe Brial, Angus Scott-Young, and Tuaiana Tualima. As strong as our back row has been, the departure of Liam Wright and limited availability of Hooper and Gleeson might open a door for one of those guys under a new coach next year. Back row depends a bit on how Cale comes back from injury and what Kiss wants to do with the locks though.

Teddy Wilson is probably the other outside chance, but he might need Jake Gordon (and probably another 9) to cop an injury for that to happen in the next 5.

Brial is a pretty good shout. He’ll know Kiss’ style. Has that mongrel in him that should help him in test footy. I think Ieli would be the other one they would be keen to get in before the World Cup. He appears to be able to handle the heat at scrum time.
I think HMP is more likely than Jake Deb imo.

We have those two games against Japan in August this year. They'll be experimental sides, with probably 5 debutants in the away game alone.

Fair chance the 1000th player is a random one capper who runs on for 5 mins at the end of the game in Tokyo

For our league fans (I haven't watched a minute of Lomax), would Zac:
1) make our best 15/23? Be that much better than the alternative?
2) What position and style would he be?

He's a fantastic athlete and got that freak ability to finish a try. I'd see him as Winger.

He's very much a League player and if to compare to others who have come over I'd say he's most similar to Timana Tahu. They have a very specific athletic skill set and physical presence that might be found out if chucked in the Centres. He is definitely good under the high ball which is great for a 15 to go along with genuine speed but I'm not sure how much of a kicking game he'd have. Can place kick though.

So, not quite in the category of 'spend serious dosh'? Nice to have him but not urgent with Jorgensen and I assume Nawaqanitawase with Pietsch/Kellaway/Potter/Toole as reserves.

I want to say with the current back 3 players around no, but we saw the Wobs become toothless without Wright so any talent on offer should be taken seriously.

He'd jump Toole, Potter and Kellaway instantly in my mind.

Agree with both of these comments. Lomax offers a lot in the air - super exciting prospect and would love to see him sign with a super rugby club. Exciting year as we head towards a world cup with players starting to eye off positions!!

Interesting to hear a lot of criticism about Kellaway.

A great servant of Aus. Rugby. Not the fastest or strongest in any key discipline but is an incredibly talented player with probably the best game awareness in the backline (in line with Jorgensen & Wright) - pretty rare to find.

I do agree that he is outdone by Jorgensen, Nawanqanetewase and Pietsch however I would rank him easily about Toole and Potter.

interested to hear the forums thoughts

Toole and Potter shouldn’t be in our current best back three, it should be something like

Wright, Jorgensen, Pietsch, Kellaway, Daungunu, Mark N (Nawaqanitawase) (for 27)

I don't think Kellaway has been this player for two years or so now - particularly struggles in defense these days

He is a player whose reputation preceeds him

Full back is going to be one of the bigger problems to solve next year. Even if Wright comes back at some point, ACL injuries tend to still affect the speed and acceleration for a period even after being fit to play. Jorgenson is a good young player but really ready for 15 at the moment from a game flow perspective

Be interesting to see what happens with JAS. Mail is he will stay at 15 for the Tahs, so would make sense to give him a crack for the Wallabies there at some point. Kellaway is past his best, still a smart player but the deficiencies show up a lot more not he doesn't have his best physical tools anymore

I've heard that's where McKellar prefers him, but jeez that's a very short list of centers at the tahs if that happens. They'd likely need one (or both) of Kellaway and Potter to play 13 for that to make sense with their squad.

Yes they’ll need him at 13, back three coverage is strong with Kellaway, Jorgensen, Potter and Reilly

Wright is due back by late April that should be enough time before the Nations Championship

Kellaway still has 49 tests he was poor for the Tahs and on the EOYT but showed his value v Arg and SA
