Wallabies v Lions, 19 July Suncorp

The ref abuse is off the mark, the 50 50s were fairly even across the game and all the big calls were defensible. Reality is Wallabies conceded 10 soft points across the first minutes of each half. Bitch all you want about the defensive system but it was good enough to win the remaining 78 minutes of the game by 2 points.

While this is overly simplistic/the lions had the cue in the rack for the last 10, if we cut out some simple errors and get Valetini back in to get us some front foot ball we can definitely win next week. Both teams will improve but we have more improvement in us.
Tackle in the air, direct contact with shoulder to head, no arms tackle on the try line, 8+ penalties within the Lions 22 and no yellow.

Yeah, nah. OKeefe was exactly as spectacularly fucking spastic as expected.

Agree that our 12/13 isnt working.

I think we need to bring another 12 in (call my crazy but JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor)), Len to 13 and move JAS to the Wing for Potter which would be tough on Potter.

We need a bigger team

Next week

1. Bell
2. Pollard
3. Alan
4. Frost
5. Skelton
6. Valetini
7. McReight
8. Wilson
9. Gordon
10. Donaldson
11. JAS
12. JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor)
13. Ikitau
14. Jorgo
15. Wright
16. Fassler
17. Slipper
18. Robertson (assuming Tupou is still out of form)
19. Williams
20. Hooper
21. Tate
22. Lynagh
23. Potter/Kellaway
When did JOC (James O'Connor) last play 12?.. and for the Wallabies? Ikitau and JOC (James O'Connor) have no historic partnership in 12/13 do they? and JOC (James O'Connor) has only been in camp for a short time. I don't think JAS was working, but I don't see JOC (James O'Connor) as a viable solution. We saw that JAS/Ikitau had viability in the England game. JAS is just so short on Rugby game time.

I don't see how Slips starts over Bell when guys like Skelton and Valetini arent available. I thought the props did well but I still would have had Tupou in there. We got blown tthe fuck off the park purely in size and defensive strategy.
Look I’m not saying Slipper is our first option 1 but at some point Bell is going to have to come off if he’s starting and being tasked with all the go forward. So when do you want to insert him? All of the Super sides got overrun after their starters went off.

In 2025 I just don’t think a starter is necessarily a better player than a sub.

Ok a bit of a rant here, apologies in advance.

I hate losing to these complete flogs, they're nothing but home nations flogs. They live offside and should have been carded multiple times. O'Keefe is a shocker and needs to be emailed a fresh copy of the 2025 version of the IRB Laws of the Game.

Now, having gotten that out of my system, we clearly weren't ready for the intensity of the game. The team has literally played one game this year, and it showed. Lynagh was targeted, but he put in a decent shift when the whole team was on the backfoot. Donaldson opened the game up a bit at the end, which is exactly what his role was supposed to be, so don't @ me with the Lynagh / Donaldson stuff.

Forwards collectively need more starch. The defensive system is too passive and it's putting us on the backfoot. The pods looked a little disorganised too, and that comes with a) not having played together for a while, and b) having to re-adjust when your primary ball carriers are missing. We will be better in the next game, particularly if one or two of our primary ball carriers return.

The flogs will be annoyed that they didn't win by more. They aren't mobile and will get shredded if the Wallabies can work their attack out. We did well to claw back, when the game looked like it was going to open up. The replacements did the job there, and did it well.

Onwards and upwards to game 2. We're still in this.
"Donaldson opened the game up a bit at the end, which is exactly what his role was supposed to be, so don't @ me with the Lynagh / Donaldson stuff."... I'll give you that stuff. Lynagh was poor in his kicking and the backs did nothing with him leading them. Why bring Donaldson on with 20 to go when the game is nearly gone? He needs to start. If we want to have a chance of winning.

A bloke hammered a guy in the air and only gave away a pen. Dangerous and foul play.
Another bloke uses his body as a ramp to take down JAS, who went flying!
Pretty hard to cop when they’re yellow every other time (particularly the 2nd one).

I really like this take on where the game is going.

Anyone who watched this match can't say that size doesn't matter. Size matters, and Rugby Australia is falling far behind. They should buy some League units or invest in Kerevi, the last big centre to wear the gold jersey.

Anyway didn't end up being nearly as bad as I thought. Thoughts:

- We didn'tm use our backline at all. Guess Schmidt doesn't think we can after the Fiji game but god damn its a bit predictable.
- 7As (Allan Ala'alatoa) Wallaby POM for me. Dude had a beast of a game.
- Frost did his high workrate thing without making any catastrophic defensive misreads. Good stuff.
- Having said that, lineout failed miserably.
- JAS and Ikitau got negative space and both still made gainline and sucked in defenders. Not sure what people are smoking if they think our centres are the problem.
- Gordon was criminally slow.
- Our kicking was too deep. When we actually got it on point it created all sorts of chaos. But it was 1 in 4.

I'm not saying the wallabies would have won if okeef made correct calls but they could have. The no arms tackle was an absolute debacle. It's a yellow for repeated infringements and penalty. Curry was offside so much. At one point he caused the wallabies to run a slight obstruction because he was in the way and okeef gave lions the penalty. It was a joke.

Wallabies have a lot to improve on which we would expect for their second hit out. I would expect 6 changes to next week's starting side of Joe has any brain
