Wallabies v Lions - 3rd Test, Accor Stadium, Saturday 2 August

Lynagh was mostly pretty good for first 50 mins, but had a number of errors creep in that last half hour...

I think the plan was to bring Donaldson on for him in the latter part of the game but the injury to Potter complicated that...

I imagine the thinking to then keep Donaldson on the bench in case of an emergency was that he wouldn't be an improvement to the back three that were on, and that includes McDermott filling in on the wing.

Jorgo was often good too, but was involved in a soft tackle or miss for just about all of the Lions tries.

Potter injury would have massively stuffed up all of the back three defensive duties, but worth noting. Opposition coaches will be noting it.

My point being he is not being held account nearly as much as the other two. Listen to the Stan coverage, along with punters commenting on here. I understand the plan and Donaldson was held back in case of any other back injuries.

Yoda, I get most of my coverage from this site, rarely reading the print media and radio/TV news coverage of rugby is minimal so I don't think I can comment on the way media might address him. But just in relation to the reactions on GandG, I put it down to parochialism. This site is dominated by Reds fans and the commentary on all things rugby is generally slanted towards all things Red being good and everything and everyone else is a bit rubbish.
Not sure all Reds fans are like that but the Stan commentary don't comment when Lynagh makes a mistake.

The missed kicks weren't great considering kicking is one of the primary reasons he was picked, however the dropped high ball that led to Curry's try was a backbreaker

You've just got to hope he learns from a game like that

Agree, but he is getting a free ride in the media. Noah would have copped it relentlessly!
Bear in mind that Lynagh is (effectively) two Tests into his Wallabies career. Don't quote me on this, but I don't recall Noah copping it "relentlessly" after his second start.

Lolesio has certainly faced criticism. But this came after several starts and further into his ~30 Test career (to date).

We need to smash them this week and the unofficial narrative of this test (or at least the narrative that we take from the series) can be that with better officiating we should've won it 2-1.

That'd give us a lot of confidence heading into the RC, and a point to prove for the EOYT.

A dominant win in this test is the only way forward. Takes the smugness away from the Lions, lifting a trophy after losing a game and their hope of becoming the most successful Lions team ever

It's time to stack performances together

I'm pretty sure he did cop it relentlessly after his debut, along with Irae Simone - v the All Blacks in Sydney, they both had shockers.

Minor detail but I’d like to see our back three better prepped in the next test to defend quick kick offs and kicks for touch. Three instances off the top of my head where the kick could have been retrieved but instead the Lions ended up with a line out near our line. School boy stuff.

Brumby. Can you tell me why Lynagh gets limited criticism compared to Lolesio and Donaldson? He missed two conversions that could have won us the game. He drops a ball in our 22, and from the scrum the Lions score. Misses touch from a penalty kick 15 minutes from full time which would have seen our line out and advance into Lions territory. He is and will be a great player no doubt, but it seems he is being given a much more positive spin in the media and commentary than our other two ever get. Obviously Schmidt favours him but I personally don't think he is a starter just yet and Donaldson should be given the starting role for an extended period. The backs would definitely see more ball. Lynagh was standing still when passing often, which is hardly putting the opposition into two minds in defence? Just some observations.
You think Lynagh is getting limited criticism?

Strange - cause there is plenty of it both on here and everywhere else. Go back and read last weeks posts.

Lolesio copped plenty too - a decent amount over the top.

I haven’t personally seen as much on Donaldson but I put that down simply to him not being the player in the hot seat at present (the thing that grinds your gears, I know).

Bit more than minor - probably more like diabolical. Have a look a the positioning when this one was kicked off, and this is before Potter went off (that's him on the 10)

But a fair bit of crdit to Lions 10. His kicking from restarts and penalties was probably the best I've ever seen. Two of his penalty kicks to 5m out were just sensational, and probably won them the game

Wouldn't be surprised to see JAS shifted to Potter's wing and a centre combo of Paisami/Ikitau or Ikitau/Kellaway or Flook

Not saying it would necessarily improve our chances but I think Schmidt will be looking to sure up that midfield defence whilst still retaining JAS as an attacking threat in the starting side.

My guess it will be Peitsch straight in for Potter and revert to a 5/3 bench with Kellaway back. Hopefully Valetini and Skelton are ok. I'd also start Donno with Lynagh to bench. We need both Lynagh and Donno revolving with equal start time to build better depth.

I think Schmidt will hold back starting Donno until TRC, I do agree there needs to be a time for him to get that experience starting. There will be an impending feeling to avoid making too many changes after how close we got.
