Wallabies v Lions - 3rd Test, Accor Stadium, Saturday 2 August

Yeah, they've come this far at JAS at 13. He clearly needs more time there, especially in defence, it would be fairly crazy to move away from that now.

I also don't see the point in moving on from Lynagh. If he's first choice, give him more time starting test matches. Every game he will improve

I think Schmidt will hold back starting Donno until TRC, I do agree there needs to be a time for him to get that experience starting. There will be an impending feeling to avoid making too many changes after how close we got.
Probably right. Question would be whether Lynagh starting against the Lions or ABs and Springboks? Guess Schmidt thought Lions?

I didn't understand the Tahs playing him at 15 when Joe was going to have him at 13. Crazy. Ikitau is our best 13. "Every game he will improve". Not guaranteed which is why it is important to have Tom and Ben both getting time starting and on the bench. Not go down the Noah road and give him 30 Tests to see he wasn't our outstanding best. I'm liking the look of our squad though.

Bit more than minor - probably more like diabolical. Have a look a the positioning when this one was kicked off, and this is before Potter went off (that's him on the 10)

But a fair bit of crdit to Lions 10. His kicking from restarts and penalties was probably the best I've ever seen. Two of his penalty kicks to 5m out were just sensational, and probably won them the game
It's good heads up play from the Lions, but I thought you couldn't kick off quickly like this when using a different ball from the one used for the penalty (or conversion)?

I haven't been able to find the laws governing it but I thought it was part of the ball laws (section 2) and something along the lines of not receiving undue benefit from a change of ball. That section is much more specific to the nature of the ball itself now though.

Possibly it was removed a long time ago, was only a community rugby variation or I just straight up imagined it, but not having a provision for that does raise a potential issues. Theoretically a team could send 2 or 3 players up the sideline (outside of the field of play) to rush in and take a quick kick off with a fresh ball immediately after a penalty is awarded, with the kicking team likely still in the other half.

You can't take the kickoff until all of the receiving team is on or behind the 10m line (12.5b).

As you say, this s just great play from the Lions, and very poor awareness for the Wobs

Right, that's the one covering it now.

As much as the back 3 need to get back quickly, the real change for us then is probably having a couple of the forwards who are positioned on the 10 for the kick off take their time coming back to prevent a kick off until the rest of the team is set.

it would be helpful if before the game the officials, coaches and captains could agree on the definition of "neck"
seems NH's differs from australian

Brumby. Can you tell me why Lynagh gets limited criticism compared to Lolesio and Donaldson? He missed two conversions that could have won us the game. He drops a ball in our 22, and from the scrum the Lions score. Misses touch from a penalty kick 15 minutes from full time which would have seen our line out and advance into Lions territory. He is and will be a great player no doubt, but it seems he is being given a much more positive spin in the media and commentary than our other two ever get. Obviously Schmidt favours him but I personally don't think he is a starter just yet and Donaldson should be given the starting role for an extended period. The backs would definitely see more ball. Lynagh was standing still when passing often, which is hardly putting the opposition into two minds in defence? Just some observations.
Because his name is Lynagh and is the son of a Wallaby great?

So the Lions took the kickoff as Lynagh ran past the 10m line from his kick? Dumb that the Wallabies didn't realise.

It was Potter who was last back (he chased Lynagh's pen goal kick) and Smith kicked it when he crossed the 10m line to exactly where Potter would have been if he wasn't still getting back.

Say what you want about the Lions, they are smart and well coached

Maybe because Lolesio has 20 more international appearances than Lynagh? Most fair minded supporters would cut him a bit of slack.

Yoda, I get most of my coverage from this site, rarely reading the print media and radio/TV news coverage of rugby is minimal so I don't think I can comment on the way media might address him. But just in relation to the reactions on GandG, I put it down to parochialism. This site is dominated by Reds fans and the commentary on all things rugby is generally slanted towards all things Red being good and everything and everyone else is a bit rubbish.
It's what makes GandG so good! ;)
