School sporting scholarships/recruitment

I didn't know volume was an issue. If there is an issues in the 14s I find it funny that the Marlins raise it.

Brian, I just hope Junge pulls you into line because I am unsure what you had to add. I had nothing but respect for your commentary until that comment

Volume is an issue when you try to tell other people what they can and can't post. You'll note that I've not attempted to tell you what you can and can't post.

I quite deliberately didn't nominate a team or district in the original post. You for some reason have concluded (a) that I was complaining on behalf of Manly and (b) that I was directing the comment on the basis that Manly were suffering at the actions of others. I have no idea on what basis you seem to have concluded this. Please indicate the words or phrases in my posts which have led you to this conclusion. Or have you simply comcluded that as I have a Manly logo I would automatically defend or justify anything that Manly did. Maybe that's how you operate, but I give praise and criticism regardless of afiliation. You'll note that I'm quite open about which teams, clubs and schools that I support whereas you seem not to be as open in this regard.

I find it quite fascinating that you have taken offence at something which wasn't directed at any specific team, club or group - possibly you feel that it was directed at whoever you are involved with and have knowledge of recruiting going on there and have protested without even being accused.

I also not that you denied that any team/club recruited anyone on the basis of size. That's a view to which you are perfectly entitled, however, my eyes and ears tell me otherwise and from the private messages sent to me by other posters I'm not the only one who has witnessed this phenomenon.

At least at Northbridge, they're calling them leadership scholarships and not trying to pretend that the recipients are either a) uniquely intelligent or b) musically talented.

I'll be interested to see how many "leadership scholars" end up as student leaders (i.e. School Captain/ Senior Prefect etc);)

QH, are you referring to the "Senior Open Scholarship 1 & 2" at Shore when you reference leadership scholarships? If so, I can confirm that despite being labelled open these are given to students who already attend Shore at the end of year 10 on the basis of their rank in the Order of Academic Merit list.

No I was referring to the ones advertised in the paper last year seeking boys to start in Year 11.

A least Uber drivers will be making a dollar out of this, they just need to work out what playing fields to hang around.

But will domestic airlines also be making a dollar out of this in the current season as they have in the past?

Did I read correctly on the GPS thread that Waverley 16As contain recruits from other schools, including some from Trinity?

I'd always assumed that Waverley didn't recruit, but this is the second mention of recruiting there.

This new format of school rugby seems to have increased the need to recruit, not reduced it.

If you were referring to my post in the GPS thread, I did mention Trinity boys at Waverley but I did not say they were recruited.

What I said was the make-up of the Waverley team this year was (significantly) different to last year. There were some boys in the team previously from Trinity that I recognised from last year and I know from the club scene. How & why they got to Waverley I don't know. As much as I hate recruiting I do not want to cast aspersions on anyone.

No problem, that's why I put it as a question to see if anyone knew. On face value a move from Trinity to Waverley seems unusual.

Waverley are definitely giving scholarships/bursaries, theres a couple of new addition in the Opens and 14's & 15's. It's a bit hard to deny when parents of these boys are openly bragging about there kids being offered scholarships.

Brisk walk to Summer Hill station, couple of trains to Bondi Junction and another stroll up the hill. Easy. If they jog, even better for rugby.

Yes there is a big boy at Waverley this year year from Trinity because Trinity said bye bye to him.
He was apparently on a full scholarship at Trinity, happens every almost every year from the Waverley Junior school, he lives very close to Waverley so logic would suggest he should have always gone there and his mates are at Waverley.
Know he is now happy, guess he has returned home.

My understanding is that in the case of Trinity additions the boys' left that school for varied reasons and had pre-existing contacts (some rugby) with Waverley boys so asked to come across. Given the fees are about a third of those of peer schools, it's an attractive choice for parents. And if a boy is a good rugby player and there is room to fit him in then who wouldn't take him in.

The school also has a comparative advantage wrt location and some league types (and in the past AFL type) find it easier to mix league commitments with schooling at Waverley. Again, the much lower fees make this an attractive option compared to geographic peer schools.

So there are many and varied reasons why boys change schools and go to particular schools other than 'being given a scholarship'.

Another attraction is that Waverley is running a very good rugby program with quality coaching, so parents can be assured their sons will be given every chance to develop as players and which will also enhance their chances of making CAS and State teams.
If parents are happy with the standard of education at the school, then the rugby benefits are a bonus, on top of the cheaper fees.

Although I didn't mention the word "scholarship" in my post (quite deliberately so).

Very fortuitous for Waverley that a number of good rugby players all left one school for "varied reasons" and all had contacts at Waverley. Waverley clearly an attractive option for a range of reasons.
