Yeah, true. But there'd still be a little bit of short term pain. And there's always the chance he'd stay and not come back.

Daily Tele piece is behind a firewall but suggestions are he is being hit up but NZ and Japan as he is off contract after this year.

That might be the case but is he going to be offered a head coaching gig by a NZ Super Rugby team? If not, should we really be offering him a head coaching gig next year so he doesn't take an assistant gig in NZ or potentially a head coaching role in Japan?

Isn't he a Kiwi or did my brain make that up?

Yes, he's a Kiwi.

It's no coincidence that our most successful recent coaches (Link and Cheika) had extensive OS experience before they found Super Rugby success. We should be aiming to get all of our coaches overseas, but working out what it will take to get them to come back when they are ready. I'd even make it a selection criteria of any Aus super rugby head coach position.

Cron looks like initially a good pigs coach for the Wobs before getting a head coach role IMHO

Without experience rolling straight into a head Super Rugby coaching spot is a big ask, Gibson's interviews highlight the issues

That said the tahs seem committed to getting the back room structures right so whoever it is isn't reinventing the wheel

Puts Larkhams accelerated promotions into perspective.

I think developing our own pathway is crucial too and that has been improving in recent years. We end up with a real vacuum in coaching here if the only realistic pathway to becoming a good professional coach is to go overseas.

NRC has certainly helped by providing an extra step for Super Rugby assistant coaches to get some more head coaching experience.

Do they get paid to coach in the NRC?

I don't disagree, but I don't think we can (or have) develop good coaches in Australia at the moment, relative to the rest of the world. There is a lack of diversity.

A big part of it is not just getting our coaches overseas, but it's bringing overseas coaches here. How do we get guys who have been part of really successful teams into our setups?

Wrong forum to be making comment about diversity of coaching experience
Daryl Gibson (NZ) - Glasgow, Crusaders and Maori
Chris Whitaker (AUS) - Leinster, Stade Francais, Narbonne and Moutauban
Simon Cron (NZ) - None at professional level
Steve Tandy (WAL) - Ospreys

I think that's kind of the point though. Currently you can't really recruit a team of coaches that are up to Super Rugby standard that are home grown in terms of their experience.

The best coaching pathway for an Australian coach currently is to go overseas and gain experience. We shouldn't try and remove that or diminish it but we also desperately need to improve the domestic pathways so good coaches can hone their craft and progress up the ranks.

Agree with your point however Strewthcobber comment was "there was a lack of diversity".

Ideally I'd like to see RA put in place agreements with a team in each of the major rugby competitions (Top League, Premiership, Top 14, Pro 14, MLR etc) where we can share ideas players and coaches. Give the coaches an option to do a professional development abroad.

Players who are interested in an oversea lifestyle might also want to spend a season or two away. If we have formalised agreements with these teams we would still be able to have some control on workload etc.
