Reds 2020

TSR

Speight is contracted to 2021 but, as per Reg’s comment, Hardy, CFS & Daugunu all only until next year.

The onus/pressure is now firmly on them not to be number 3 in the pecking order.

I can only think this was driven at RA level because of a perceived weakness in test wingers for the Wallabies, because as a Super Rugby level whilst the Reds wingers aren’t great, they are suitable
The Waratahs could have used him more to be honest- we are not at all stacked for wings.

"Suliasi was a standout schoolboy rugby player, he is an elite finisher with a lot of big game experience for a young man and will have an immediate impact for the Reds in 2021 and put himself right in the frame for higher honours,” Scott Johnson said.
“He is one player we have been looking at very closely this year with the skillset we are looking for in the outside backs. He has been working in a great environment at the Storm and has chosen a future in rugby, so it is a great result for the games.”

The money suggested for an NRL winger seems quite bizarre, they don't get well paid in the NRL so why are we paying overs?

Vunivalu is a great pickup for the reds. Having a union background is certainly beneficial but he is also a prolific finisher and has scored some freakish tries. He would just about rival Izzy falau in the air and is certainly a lot faster. He isn’t near as fast as korobete but is still up there. From what I have seen he actually has a great passing game (albeit it never gets used on the wing in league), he manages to pass well both sides at pace which not many wingers are capable of (sadly).

Another year is a long time to wait for a new signing.

I assume it’s the supply and demand equation.

Whilst quality wingers are something of a production line in league, we currently have a dearth of them as our last WC campaign showed.

Thank heavens for Fiji.

Edit: though I should note I haven’t seen exactly the sum they are paying and I do agree with your general point

I'm all for it.

The Reds (and Wallabies) are getting a proper strike power player, with a good skill set to match, who will be in the prime of his career.

He's coming from arguably the best club and coaching setup across all Australian codes, so work ethic and coach-ability won't be an issue. It should be good watch.

I'm really excited about this. Seems like an incredibly talented bloke. Not just a strike winger but someone with a great sense of the ball and goes for it. Definite union player with a brief stint in league. Hopefully he's enjoying Australia and can find some community within the other Fijian Reds & Wallabies.

Wow! A lot of coin. Basically the same per year as Kerevi was offered (and declined for more Japan money). Do those who watch NRL think he is just a winger, or could he be anything more (13?)? Obviously a lot more stuff to learn for that, I know.

It was reported $1.8m for two years

And that is stupid money for an NRL winger, the Storm pays bugger all for units outside their spine, but I hope when the dust settles the number is made up by grumps including potential third party opportunities and playing every Wob game (including all the match payments)

Players who have played for Queensland after a stint in the NRL:

Berrick Barnes, Will Chambers, Karmichael Hunt, Lachlan Maranta, Eto Nabuli, Wendell Sailor, Clinton Schifcofske, Andrew Walker (This doesn't include blokes who played U20's league such as Tuttle, Hegarty, Timu etc.).

Compared to the players above, how do you think the signing of Vunivalu will sit?

Being 24 years old, Dally M top try scorer in his first two years in the NRL, and a rugby player at heart, I think this might be one of their best signings yet (Top 3).

Also, $900k a year is a huge sum - If my research is correct Beauden makes 953k, Hooper 1.2m and Folau 1.5m

I think that is a huge point and positive. I did a quick check and Bellamy was performance co-ordinator and assistant coach at the Broncos in 98 when they won the GF with Brad Thorn in the team. So Thorn will know first hand what Bellamy expects from his players. A lot similarities in their coaching styles - no bulsh%^ and plenty of hard work. (And yeah I recognise that Thorn needs to develop his tactical and strategic coaching - something that Bellamy is brilliant at with the Storm.)

I think he should be looked at as a potential 13 option and not just a wing. He was a 13 growing up in NZ and a highly- rated one at that. It becomes an issue though with all the other potential options you guys have in 12/13.
