Personally I am happy with the reputation as it holds the focus on one element which can be a distraction.
But I must admit I have mixed feeling about mauls. IMHO they have a place but need a lot of cleaning up and simplification of the rules rather than what they have deteriorated in to - a free form multi sided multi directional cluster which is hard to stop legally (why keep the game competitive?
) and just a eye sore that mocks the laws. Binding is just touching, you can join from any back side; just not the front which is not always the leading side, any direction is straight ahead and players breaking off is still the same maul (WTF?)........

Which is has been for years - my first foundation rugby course I got into an argument with the NSW ref's boss over it
The problem is if you changed that Law, then defenders would simply form the maul, then leave the maul, then join it again to cause offside, and nobody would use the maul ever again.
Change the laws to one hit of use-it-or-lose-it and the problem goes away. The maul wasn't greatly used in modern rugby until the 5 second restart came in.

It should be as soon as the ref calls use it. The ball must be moved on. No 5 seconds to start it again. Good mailing teams should be able to maintain the momentum. I'd actually like to extend that to rucks as well. We get told that there will be stricter application of the use it or lose it law but we're still seeing 9s hold it up for 3-5 after the call. It should have to be immediate. Ref makes the call. Ball move straight away. If not short arm for opposing team.
Little tweaks like that will have positive effects on the flow of the game. Which is as important if not more than ball in play on my opinion.

. I reckon even I would catch the 9 every now and then.

That's not what I'm saying and it's pretty clear at that. It's not like the defending teams are allowed to move until the ball is gathered by the 9. The same will apply here. Just instead of the ref calling use it and having the 9 take 5 sec to play on. They will have to actually use it. Defenders will still have to follow the laws.

Slightly off topic, but I have just watched "Chasing the sun", a documentary covering the Springbok's 2019 RWC win.
5 episodes of approx 45 mins each.
With unrestricted access to training sessions, change rooms, team meetings, tactical discussions by the coaching group, and players, the film makers have done a great job. Having a mike in the coaches' box during Tests was very interesting.
You see the aspects required to deliver a successful national rugby team as well as the technical and personal components. Never thought I'd see Rassie Erasmus tear up! As they say in the classics, the Springbok journey is compelling viewing.

I think it will I know a lot of kiwis refuse to watch super rugby au but then again they all have stan and watch their comp so probably won’t see the FTA numbers spike
