Injuries have hit the Reds hard, for Round 1.

Surprised by Annan inclusion on the bench over Grealy

Absolutely. From recollection in the trials Grealy dropped a couple of high balls but otherwise looked pretty energised and active.

A bit unexpected, though I think Grealy was left out of the second trial whereas Annan played.

I think Annan has probably been preferred for his size here, with a smaller 10 in Lynagh it probably helps to have the slightly bigger body in Annan on the bench in case things are going south. It doesn't hurt that he covers centre as well.

Looking at the line-ups this is not an easy match to pick for a result. Over the week i have changed my tipping twice and I'm now picking the Canes by a few. On paper the Hurricanes tight five are better, Reds backrow marginally better, the 10's/15's the great unknown, and the Hurricanes 11-14 look definitely stronger.

How the Hurricanes handle the heat and humidity might decide it. Then again, my tipping would be better if I tossed a coin so make of my prediction what you will.

Entirely too many asterisk options on the Reds team announcement!

Connor Anderson****

So Connor Anderson has a Reds cap but not a Super Rugby Pacific cap? Does that mean he played a previous version of Super Rugby?

Is a starting debut really a thing? If you've made your debut you've debuted.

The Reds v Panasonic game was a capped game, Anderson already has a Reds cap but not a super rugby one. Starting debut is absolutely still a thing for the guys getting them.

Fortunately there's no one making their Reds debut who has played Super Rugby elsewhere otherwise they'd need to use 5 asterisks!
Wow, didn't expect you to be celebrating a players injury.

Personally I hope Luke Jones makes a swift recovery and can join Ben Navosailagi, Phransis Sula-Siosi, Wilson Blyth, Floyd Aubrey and Ethan Dobbins in their Reds/Super Rugby Pacific/Run-on debuts of all shades and styles.

I forgot about Luke Jones.

I obviously wasn't celebrating his injury, more the number of debut categories they have noted in the team announcement.

Haha it's all good, that accusation was made with tongue firmly in cheek.

On a more earnest note, as silly as it may read I do think it matter to the players (maybe less so the more experienced guys like Jones). It goes hand in hand with noting the clubs and schools of the players and it's anything to gee these guys up as they arrive on the scene is worthwhile. It's much the same as the good vibes coming out of those wallabies team sheet announcements they started really celebrating under Rennie.

Very interesting match up. I actually quite happy to see Lakai running at 7 for Canes although he an 8 usually, but a good kid regardless. Also a little surprised at the 6-2 split on bench, as I think with the heat could get a little tricky, and Canes only have Booth at 9 and Godfrey, a 20yo kid from wider traing squad, who actually went well in game I went to last week, but could have a bit of pressure. Anyway love it a couple of young fellas for my Canes to add extra interest. Also happy Roigard got a start, watch this young fella, reckon an All Black in 2024, he looks pretty reasonable to me!

How many Reds players from Downlands College in Toowoomba do you remember?

Annan is seriously good, hope he gets a chance for some game time this weekend because he is talented
beg to differ sorry.
Have watched him since he was 14 years old. He may have skills on the training paddock but doesnt have the temperament or mental strength when put under a small amount of pressure.
That may come I guess. (it probably should seeing the investment in him by RA and Reds)

how the hell does one quantify the metric of mental strength of a 14year old

I am really looking forward to the SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) player who put their hand up for Wallaby selection this week and every week.

GnGR should start a thread after this round of players who have put their hand up to be selected for test selection. I’m sure all of us armchair selectors will have a view!

Mr Eddie Jones is going to have a busy weekend. Love to know what he’s looking for.
