From the QF stage onward it was clear the refs were backing right off in the last few minutes, particularly the games where a penalty could decide it.

Completely disagree, ABs desperate for a TH in the dying minutes laid on the weight immediately and pushed before the ball was fed. I think Barnes would have been closer to a short arm for early shove than for not holding the weight.

Its always been thus and one of those facts those who lean more into the League side of things tend to hate.

In most sports, the winner of a finals match will be the team who implements a conservative game plan .

Not always - but it happens a lot .

I've been thinking about that...

If you asked me to name a ref who, having made an error, would admit to it & try to correct it, I'd say Barnes.

The fact he admitted to the error but let it stand suggests to me that he had to let it stand. I don't think he could even have asked TMO to "check for foul play on 7 Black, or any other reason the penalty should not stand" because TMO would only be able to rule on the foul play element, not the "any other reason" part.

That said, if thete was nothing he could've done id expect him to have said as much to Ardie. Which i didn't hear him do. Can anyone explain what happened in terms of the applicable Law(s)?

I actually noticed that one real-time and just assumed that they had looked at it in the background. Who knows. You'd sure hope so. After Kerevi got done all those years ago against Wales you tend to be a little more keyed in to seeing the old leading forearm in games.

And Jeb Sinclair (Canada) (red) and Finn Russell (red) and Kerevi again this RWC (yellow).

You've had the same action result in everything from a red, to a yellow, to not even a penalty. And that's with a referee, two ARs and the TMO. It's incomprehensible.

I understand it if the ref misses a subtle knock on or something iffy at the breakdown, but we are talking about potential red cards, which are match deciding. You can't apply the laws willy nilly in that area.

Best win ever for the Springboks. Looking at the tournament as a whole I think that France win was very important. Sad to lose Nienaber to Leinster and Jones to England. Luckily Rassie stay and will take us into the new era. Kolisi and this squad will be remembered as Springbok legends and will tour SA after arrival on monday.

Hard luck to the All Blacks, they came very close. Respect in the way they handle the loss and not like the English back in 2019.

Wayne Barnes was excellent, made a few mistakes but its human.

Next series is against Ireland.
