Another crew that I have been really impressed with is the Ignatius’ 2nd VIII. In an event so traditionally dominated by other schools, they have shown their worth and are absolutely murdering the field. You just cant catch them. The best part about it is, it sets them up well for next year too, with the Year 11s moving up and Eight and helping their chances at the Major Rennie.

There are no shortcuts. SIC have nailed it by having a school rowing program focused on the kids.
You can throw money at it. You can cheat like TKS. But at the end of the day, mommy can't be at the 1000m mark, and daddy can't sign a cheque... go VEIW!!!
Should focus more on steering...

First Quad races in Hen and Chicken are coming up, and we saw last year Shore lose the dominance which they had maintained for over 20 years. Will they return to it with the Year 8 Quads this year? If their Rugby season is anything to go off, it would seem that way.

Does anyone have predictions for the Junior 8s, will be interesting to see how Scots evolves with the return of 18 rowers from Glengarry, which I assume means a 4th Junior eight will be fielded for the first time since 2017. Could be an exciting junior season for the boys from BH, many are keen to see how the 1J and 2J look next term. Kings are 2/2 in the first 2 regattas, but who knows what term 1 entails.

should be interesting to see, it mostly depends on how scots can recover after JB's tenure which was probably scots' most consistent 5 years (4th,1st,3rd,5th,3rd). I know that the program is full of coaches from the famous 2020 crew, which should help to instill a winning culture

Scots historically havent been major players in the First Junior VIII Race, with their best ever result at a HOTR being a 3rd. Its often that they transition into the senior years and gain strength, which places them consistently in the 3-5 spots. Still don't think they will challenge King's, because the height and power in that boat is ridiculous. Still thinking;

1. King's
2. St Joseph's
3. St Ignatius
4. Shore
5. Newington
6. Scots
7. Grammar
8. Sydney Boys High

Scots moving up the ranks wouldn't shock me at all. If you look at the 2018 first junior 8 prior to glengarry, they were about 38 seconds off the pace. After the stronger rowers had returned the following term, they ended up 3rd at HOTR about 5 second back from first place. I conclusion, the "glengarry effect" provided a 33 second advantage. This being said, 2018's crew was the nucleus for the great crew of 2020 so it would prove an outlier

the size of the kings boys in the junior 8s always shocks me. If you look at the crews video from last year, not only do they all look 19 years old, they row about aswell as a second 8. Definitely the force to be reckoned with in the year 10 group

You're right, just in the Juniors Cooper Mundell and Jack Charlesworth coach the 2nd eight, both were key members in 2020 for Scots. Fredrichson also coaches Quads and Squillace was involved in Quads the last couple years. Mundell was quite good for the 2J last year, coaching them to 2nd and third in most races leading to HOTR, until they're unfortunately underperformed on the big day, coming 4th but missing 2nd place by something like 2 seconds.

It's quite refreshing to see an open field this year, probably the first time the season has started without a clear since 2019 which was probably the best season in a long time. I would go off on a whim and favor kings to overpower the field come march, but would be cool to see joeys push them aswell as view

Should benefit the kids highly, for all the flack that 2020 crew gets, it was truely a great crew. Was the ultimate reason they were able to show up on the day. They had also beaten every other crew in the field at least once so it wasn't as big of a shock as some think

They've essentially been the kings of the second 8 since 2020, apparently due to their coach

I'm saying right now that this year will be like no other that we have seen in a long long time. In 2019, you would still see Shore push out and have a relatively solid and compact season up until the last 500 at HOTR. Usually, you can decipher alot from the first two results as a way of figuring out the results of all of the Term 4 and holiday work. This year, it's murky. Joey's, Ignatius and King's all winning already in the First Eight, Shore a mixed bag of results but showing potential. Newington and Scots both having the opportunity to chime in. Lots to look forward too.

Joe Bokeyar I belive. Rowed at Joey's for a bit and I think he was in the First Eight. Seems to know his stuff. Only loss so far for Ignatius' 2nd Eight has been to Shore at Iron Cove. It's always been my belief that a good Second Eight goes with a good First Eight.

What flack was thrown at Scots 2020? I only have praise for them. They are number 2 on my all time HOTR upsets list (ill drop it soon).

allegations that they knew the regatta was on a Tuesday so didn't go to hard on Saturday whilst shore and kings had a long session on the Saturday

Also the obvious fact that it was a HOTR like no other with no fans, mid week and a 6.05 winning time

I can confirm that the boys they did not know that is was on the Tuesday. This narrative has always been spread by salty kings boys who think you can "cheat" in a rowing race (cough cough 2022). The narrative that kings trained themselves into a wall on the weekend is also false because their second 8 performed unusually well on the day. As for the time, it was a cross headwind so thats why slow times were seen across the board, the race was won fair and square and Scots beat kings numerous times throughout the season anyway
