Queensland Floods

The Clarence Valley's catchment is from the Queensland Border behind the Tweed and Richmond/Wilson catchment areas to well south of Coffs Harbour to Glen Innes in the west. It is huge.
It takes a lot of water to put it in flood since the river is pretty damn wide (largest water flow in Australia) and our levee system is pretty well built.

What has been different this time around is all that rain in the lead up and at the same time SE Qld was getting that deluge we were getting rain in the southern part of the catchment.

So it isn't bad yet but once that levee breaks (and if there is another significant downpour it will) then it will be bad.

The weird thing is that in 2009 we had emergency services vehicles everywhere. Telling us to get out. This year. Nobody. Hopefully they are all up in Qld.

Swapped texts with RugbyReg a coupla hours ago. The water had reached his neighbour's house and the road was now impassable - they're waiting for the SES to pick them up (Reg's family had moved to safety yesterday).

Thoughts are with Reg, his family and everyone affected.

Photos of opposite my place in Western Brisbane. Moggill Creek (there's a walk bridge under there) and the park. My house is safe. Roads are cut to the city from here. 'Working' from home....

We are somewhat lucky in Brisbane because the water hasn't hit as hard as it did for Toowoomba and others up that way. It was terrible for those people involved. Down here we have time to get ready, get important things out of the flood's way and make sure no one is badly hurt. That is the most important things.

It is hard to imagine that levels could get worse than 74. Wivenhoe is meant to have made approximately 2m difference in flood levels to brisbane, but we are still likely to get past the 74 level. This makes this flood a lot worse than the 74 event. Probably going to come out as worse than 1 in 100 event.

We are now looking at 20,000 homes will be affected by the flood waters in Brisbane alone.

The performance and management from the Qld government and Anna Bligh has been very good to date. Campbell Newman has also been exceptional.

On the other hand I am disgusted by our priministers very robot like talking. She obviously hasn't been fully briefed, is not fully around the issues, and it looks to me like she is talking in the lead up to an election. She needs to get 'real'. Barnaby Joyce has been brilliant in comparison. Ability to get down and help people but also show is intelligence and knowledge about the events at the same time.

Campbell Newman (Brisbane Mayor) predicted this event around christmas time, but was scoffed at by Anna Bligh for being sensational and trying to panic people. While this event might save Bligh at the next election (due to her handling of the crisis) she might also be damaged for ignoring some of the warnings.

It's a sub-station down there I think. I liked the way the Govt declared Suncorp Stadium an Evacuation Centre but then the penny must have dropped - Lang Park was inundated in the '74 floods. Haven't heard a whisper about it since....

RNA showgrounds seem another strange place. Not all of that is very high, and I'd imagine that it would be difficult to get to if we get to 74 levels. QEII is the much better option (which they have now opened up). They really should have about 4 places in different spots of the city opened up though, as with all the road closures it is going to get very difficult to get around.

Yeah its all getting a bit crazy now. Flood is a couple of houses away, mine should be fine. Reg's area is pretty badly flooded, i have a mate who lives on the lower bit of chelmer and his house is half flooded, but hes all good and water wont reach the second level.

The army might be sinking 'the island' which is a large party barge moored just near all the bridges. That would be a sight to behold you might all see it on the news in a couple of days.

Luckly I live in a pretty good area, everyones helping each other, and even if people are affected, most of them have pretty good insurance so it wont be much of a problem.

Suncorp fire sounds like a small incident in a generator room. Here's the latest from Lang Park:
