Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the SJRU under 16 competiton play on Sundays? Given that finals are just around the corner some teams are certainly going to be missing their stars!

If I am correct would the SJRU not have organised for the games to be played on a Saturday rather than Sunday? I would envisage a few coaches being a little bit irate over such a decision!

Regards,
Newbie

They can't do Saturday as they wouldn't have any players due to school commitments... The clubs, however, don't matter... Read into that what you will

LMAO!! Who would have ever thought; SJRU disenfranchising the very clubs it is meant to support! Are there no rationale thinkers within SJRU?

Talk about bewilderment!!

The NSW Under 16 side is a side governed by the NSW Junior Rugby Union. To participate in the NSWJRU pathway you must be registered and playing with a club that is affiliated with either Sydney Junior Rugby Union or NSW Country Junior Rugby Union.Schools offer alternate pathways for aspiring rugby players. Their pathway is not covered by the NSW JRU pathway.

The last part of this quote really disturbs me, "Their pathway is not covered by the NSW JRU pathway". I've tried to find it on the NSWJ's site but can't. Is it your quote Iluvmyfooty ? Here's why I find it disturbing. I'll use Adrian Delore as an example. He is registered and plays with his club team (Maquarie beaches) and was selected to play for NSW Country. Like all the other boys, he also plays Rugby at school and was selected to play for CHS. After his performance at the Schools championships, he was also selected in the NSW Schools team. Representatives of the 3 associations ( Schools, Country and Juniors) got together and decided who he would play for, in his case he was told it will be Schools.

I like to think that there is no one who is in a position of authority at NSWJ that would think it's ok that Adrian (and others) is denied an oppertunity to represent NSW on the basis of which representative team he's been told to play with. If there is, I think it's a disgrace and those people in positions of authority should have a good hard look at what motivates them to be in that position.

the quote is taken from the NSW Juniors pathway document at page 2 paragraph 2 (or 3).

is the under 16 NSW side a new rep side this year. There was none two years ago and I don't think there was one last year. Obviously there are some selection problems to work out if your scenario comes to pass. The only other instance I can remember was 2 years ago when Rhys Dombkins was taken from the u16 Country side to play in the NSW schools side. However there was no state side that year so there was no problem. Going on past history and the uneasy association the clubs have with the Schools I have little hope that players that are eligible due to club registration but do not play for Sydney or Country in the City/Country game will be selected

It seems the games have been changed to the morning - the club games are in the afternoon from 2.00 p.m - with a little drive for some (Dural).

Some tired lads I assume. Probably there will be rested ones as well.

The Japan school side has about 60 odd in it's contingent.

Interesting day.

Thanks for the feedback Iluvmyfooty. This is the first 16's NSW team for 10 years so I guess they will have a few problems to sort out. Rhys was a slightly different situation 2 years ago as he played at the Country championships in Nowra that year but made himself unavailable for country selection. He was never selected to play for country that year.

Rhys was selected from the Country championships in one of the country regional teams. He had some game time at TG milner that year but due to injury this game time was limited. He was later announced in the Country team but NSW Schools also selected him and they insisted he play with them. At no time was he unavailable for country

I have little hope that players that are eligible due to club registration but do not play for Sydney or Country in the City/Country game will be selected

A couple of points:

1. As it's a NSW Juniors U16s team I can accept the fact that only club registered players should be eligible.

2. Boys who are club registered but were chosen in the Schools team should not however be disenfranchised from playing in the NSW Juniors team. As I understand it the boys have no choice as to which team (SJRU, NSWSRU or NSWCJRU)they are selected in.

3. As we all know Sydney Juniors and Country Juniors "horse trade" over selections with NSW Schools once the U16 rep carnivals have concluded and it is ultimately their decisionmaking that determines the boys' pathway.

4. Can you imagine NSW Juniors leaving club registered players Andrew Kellaway, Rory Davis, Tepai Moeroa and Jarrod Matairavula (to name but a few) out of the NSW Juniors U16 team just because they were chosen in the NSW Schools team??? I don't think so!!

Union v. League

Here’s something new!

From experience I have generally found 16 years (moving into 17 years) as the age when our most talented dual code representative players have to make an election to either stay with rugby or move to league. There are several reasons why this is so, however I for one am very interested to see which dual code players from the 'U/16 Class of 2011' stay with rugby or move to league.

For mine we have not seen a talented crop of U/16’s like the one's listed below in years!

I have indentified the players in order of their respective selection in the three NSW teams competing at the National Championship this year:

NSW Schools
1. Hayden Cochrane Manly HM 2011
2. Joey Lussick Manly HM 2010/11
3. Taane Milne Roosters HM 2010/11
4. Tepai Moeroa Parramatta HM 2010/11
5. Michael Morgan Bulldogs HM 2011

Sydney Juniors
1. Eric Aukofolau Parramatta HM 2011
2. Jamo Clarke Tigers HM 2011
3. Christian Kagiassis Parramatta HM 2010/11
4. Vaka Maile Rabbitoh's HM 2011
5. Trent Winterstein Penrith/WSAS HM 2011 (received a call-up I believe)

Country Juniors
1. Nick Andrews Newcastle HM 2011
2. Corey Tulloch Illawarra HM 2011

I thought I would throw Corey Tulloch in here too because many might not have known that young Corey was once a much sought after commodity as far as the St George-Illawarra Dragons were concerned. In 2010 this Holy Spirit College Bellambi student (as he was then) was selected in the ‘U/15 Southern Country’ representative side that competed at the very, very strong NSWCCC Rugby League championship. In the same year he also happened to make the bench for the U/16 NSWCCC Rugby Union team (I believe he was then discovered at the consequential 2010 National Championship by his current school Kings). As it stood Corey actually made the very strong Illawarra HM team for 2011 and probably had to withdraw because of his move to Kings.

I for one would be quite surprised if it was actually the case that NSW Schools ignored him. For mine it was probably the likely scenario that CJRU had him as their first pick and were not willing to surrender him at any cost! I do believe that he and his school (especially the latter) would have preferred selection in the NSW Schools team. It would look better on the resume!

Does anyone know of the likely movements of any of the boys named above? Or perhaps hazzard a guess? Or any I have missed?

Regards,
Newbie

Interesting conundrum - even more interesting is that it is "only" 12 players out of how many played at State titles / Regionals / School championships to get to this level?

Don't know enough of the players to hazard a guess as to which way from here, but would be also very interested to know opinions as to which of these 12 would likely make a NSWJRU U16 merit side (i.e. school players must be club aligned to be eligible)?

Not too sure that many of these will make that decision at this age. For those at GPS/CAS/ISA schools obviously they will continue to be involved in rugby for at least the next few years. Also many of these boys are contracted to their respective clubs. Hence they will be in league until at least their contracts finish.

Contracted boys I am aware of are:

Joey Lussick Parra/GPS
Taane Milne Roosters/CHS
Tepai Moeroa Parra/GPS
Michael Morgan Bulldogs/CCC
Eric Aukofolau Parra/CHS
Christian Kagiassis Parra/ISA
Nick Andrews Newcastle/AICES

Have it on very good authority that M Morgan will go to league - will fulfill school rugby obligations till he does the HSC, but after that farewell. Same source advised he has only turned out for club 2 maybe 3 times this season due to school & Canterbury League obligations. This explains his surprising "no show" at state &/or regionals. Also, apparently (for what its worth) his mum works at Canterbury leagues.

IMO it doesn't really matter whether the boys choose to go either way as there will be boys who will step up and replace them! If its a career and money that they want they're best to stick with union bcos its played in more countries around the world.

Another name you forgot was GPS Winger Alex Lyons of Riverview who was in the Cronulla Sharks HM team in 2011, currently playing on the wing in the likely Riverview GPS Premiers

SJRU U/16 v. Kwansei Gakuin

Any results from the weekend?

SJRU U/16 v. KG

I went out to Trinity on Sunday to see the abovementioned game and must say that I was not impressed with Sydney's performance at all! The final score-line did not do the Japanese team justice as the game was in the balance with about 5-10 minutes to go (at the time SJRU were only leading 25-22 having had a gluten of possession).

For mine the game could have gone in KG's favour had they been able to convert a rolling maul on Sydney's try line in the latter stages of the match. Sydney only ran away with the game in that final period where I believe the score became a flattering 40-22! In fairness to Sydney they were resting several of their star players (i.e. Clarke, Afele, Roberts and company) however that is no excuse for the rest of the team not being able to step up to the plate!

As confirmed by someone earlier in this thread, Winterstein was in the squad and to my surprise so was George Taufa (he too must of been a late call-up). Ultimately both should have been first choice picks, and from an overall lackluster performance by Sydney both of these boys were the shining lights! Vindication would be the operative word for both lads! Another of my earlier selections must have also received a deserved late called-up; the MSZ lock, Titherton (he too like Taufa was tenancious in attack and support).

With the exception of their scrum almost all of the other set pieces were absolutely woeful! Not once were Sydney able to secure a receiving kick-off, in fact KG were able to steal every kick-offball with ease. The same applied when Sydney were kicking-off to KG; there was absolutely no pressure in the challenge! The line-outs too were at best ad-hoc!

I'm sorry but this was not a team of representative standard!

Ultimately the National Championship will be a tough and arduous affair and the depth of each team will be questioned over the same week when injuries and fatigue inevitably visit each team. For mine Sydney will lack depth and unless their star players can stay relatively injury free during National's they will be in serious trouble.

They are my thoughts! Anyone else at the game!

Regards,
Newbie.

Sjru v kg

Agree Newbie. I was at the game also. Other rested player was Cam Orr who thrives on all that was missing in the game. His assertive dominance in scrummaging would have benefited the team, his tenacity in securing the ball after kick off and his relentless energy and mobility may well have put a bit of life into the forwards. There was no persistence in attack nor defence from SJRU. 2 weeks to pick up their act!
