Schadenfreude

''That last minute cost us. I saw our right winger see space down the right side of the field and he made an aggressive call, he saw the space open and he called to [Brendan McKibbin] to kick the ball there to chase it and try to score a try,'' Waratahs coach Michael Foley said. ''The benefit of hindsight is a great thing but if we all had our time again we'd probably do something different. But I certainly understood what he was trying to do.''

Exactly what I expected from that game. I'm just happy my side came out on top of that dour affair.

Hanson and Higginbotham were our best.

Unless you're undersiege on your own try line kicking the ball away when you're leading in the last minute is never a good call. It may have a good outcome sometimes but that doesn't make the call to kick a good decision. If you have the ball you have control. The oposition need to force an error, penalty or turn over so all the pressure is on them. The team behind have to 1) get the ball and then 2) score. Kicking the ball to them most of the time just removes step 1 and because of defensive misalignment can make step 2 easier.

Ok so he kicked it then what? Did the NSW guys decided to have a beer and not worry to defend because they forgot about the golden rule of you play to the final whistle?

I wouldn't be so hard on McKibbin. Yeah it was a bad decision but Kingston and Carter were both outside him SCREAMING for him to kick it.

Campese lost a Lions series with one stupid mistake; so we have to cut McKibbin some slack.

I couldn't work out why he kicked the pill watching it at the ground though, screaming or no screaming. The ref had his arm out for a knock on advantage; it couldn't have been a penalty else he would have called it back. But McKibbin kicked it and advantage was over.

Did the commentators mention that? And did Taf score that "try" or did he lose it? Incidentally the transfer from Kingston looked exactly sideways, in other words: not forward. Haven't seen the replay yet.

B. Foley played well off the bench. We Sydneysiders saw him play for the Junior Tahs and Sydney Uni last year, and tonight he convinced us that his Sevens expertise was transposable to the XV man game. He looked better than AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) at fullback on the night and one wouldn't be surprised if he starts at 15 soon and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) takes BKH's starting spot on the wing.

Pretorius was very good again. Counting the two trials, that is his 3rd MOTM performance in a row. He earned it differently tonight: it wasn't sniping all the time for tries, well, except once, but just good passing in front of the man and standard stuff. His liaison with Hangers was superior to that of Genia with Harris, but I'll back the Reds' pairing to remedy that. Genia looked underdone.

It was good to see Cliffy back. It usually takes him ages to return to form after injury but he is not far away. 21 y.o. Lopeti was not too shabby when he got his first gig off the bench to replace Cliffy at 8 either.

The Reds best player, Ioane, was terrific as you would expect, but I liked Morahan at fullback also. He's a well-balanced runner and swatted Horne off once like he was an insect. It's the first time I've seen Tapuai start a game at the ground since his school days and you can see he is a better attacker than Ant and why he is starting at 12 - but Ant made some key tackles at 13 through anticipating well, and made his mark on the game.

Higginbotham is an annoying prick of an opponent: always in your face and telling you how ugly you are, and your sister, and he doesn't like your dog either. I love that in a 6. If he can cut down on his mistakes when he wears the gold jersey he could have a long tenure. Liked his lineout work at 2.

It's also my first time seeing Gill at the ground since school. My word: he is hard to shift for a slight lad and he makes himself a very narrow target for those trying to clean him out. He also attacks at the right spot. All these things increase his chances of a poach.

Both sides will have to improve on that. The Tahs restarts and discipline were poor, but on the other hand the Reds passing and handling were keeping the Tahs in the game at one point.

But all the other Super teams I have seen to date looked rusty also.

Commentators on Sky sports mentioned the knock on advantage, I think it's the same commentary feed as Fox. Couldn't see anything wrong with the scoring of the try.

The Law that was amended about deliberately kicking it into touch on the full. Is it for kick offs only?

PS It was good to see that the organisers had a designated place for the kids to rush onto the ground (and they did rush) to get autographs.

All the Tahs stayed and signed and Samo came out and signed for some youngsters with Reds jerseys.

Nice.
Now that is a thing that is missing from the modern game. I use to remember especially the Free State palyers in the old days stay till late on the field signing autographs talking to the kids. With all the security on the field these days that do not happen anymore think that is a great idea

I reckon that's the best post match quote from a losing coach I've read for a while: I was undecided on foley but that's decided it for me.

I would say there's little to no chance of McKibbin being dropped for the kick, nor should there be: you don't punish people for one mistake if they're willing to learn from it - if they're not then you don't drop 'em you release them cos you can't coach blokes who can't/won't learn.

.

Foley was quite electric in a dour game with virtually no spark from anyone.
I have always been a big fan of AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) but he looked like he was only there for the money last night: having said that I dont think the lack of penetration in the backs can be overlooked in explaining the lack of spark. Hangers is playing like he did against the Crusaders in Nelson last year - no confidence, hanging back and indecisive. As much as i think he seems like a good bloke its a problem if he's the second best 5/8 in NSW.

Not sure about Pretorius' pass but his general play is excellent.

Tapui was turned inside out by Kingston (who looked pretty good to me): i know you have a big wrap on Tapui but I couldn't see it - that too may be a problem with the complaints everyone is making about the 5/8 - who i actually thinks has got something.

We had two opportunities to close that game out last night in the last 10 minutes, all we needed to do was control the ball. We failed both times, once through a knock on and once through a poor decision combined with poor execution. The real issue was lack of leadership from the tahs, we should have kept it close and forced the Reds to infringe to try and win a turnover, like the All Blacks do once their ahead late in close games.

I thought it was a pretty lacklustre game all in all, the exciting finish glosses over some a high number of uneforced errors from both sides. Maybe its early season, but I think its more due to the players missing from each team. I do think both the brumbies and rebels will be fancying their chances in the Aus conference more this morning than they where 24 hours ago.

That may have been a bit of a mistake-fest at times, but there was intensity and real intent. Watching Palu and TPN in full flight again was just terrific.

Bugger, another game of crap rugby last night.

The Tahs lost it through ill-discipline, too many guys like Mumm making lazy decisions at ruck time.

In the cold light of day with the chance to reflect I've given McKibbin some slack. Wrong decision and I'm still gutted, but I'm sure I don't feel as bad as he does. As supportive as they will be, its tough facing your team mates in the sheds and then at training when you've had a howler.

My call for him to be dropped was harsh. It's his career and livelihood after all.

Having watched the game again. I have more confidence in the Tahs than I did after the Tongan trial. Here's hoping they continue to improve and build throughout the season.

Yeah Horne didn't have the best game. Got beaten in defense by a few Reds on attack and got himself hammered a few times with the ball. He probably won't be able to make ammends for this game because he will be injured.

That hit from Digby looked painful.
I Don't know if it came up in the telecast but Digby was definitely worse off after that hit. He was struggling for a couple of phases with a shoulder complaint. Reds should like the look of Digby and Morahan both look deadly with the ball in hand.

Shame about the result but hopefully it stings enough to teach a lesson.

Lastly hoe good was it seeing the kids storm the pitch after the game. I really hope that becomes a regular fixture at tahs games.
