Quite a few people here saying that Matt Brandon should be brought in to fill the 10 spot. I don't think thats the answer. It seems pretty clear that having the right player at 10 has been a massive problem for us without Quade and the Reds haven't really clicked with anyone (i'd say Lucas was best fit this season but we really only saw glimpses before injury) so why bring in a player from outside the main playing squad and have them quickly slot into the side?

Not to take anything away from Brandon, he's a good player but so is Dallan Murphy and from my understanding Dallan has been around the Reds systems for a bit longer yet still didn't really get it right. With so much traffic going through 10 I think we would be better off shifting one of the established players into that position to settle things down. Taps would be my first pick but I've been thinking maybe we could learn something from league (bare with me now) and slot a skilled forward in at 10 similar to how leaguies get a lock to play at 6 sometimes. A defensive and skilled backrower such as Shatz, Gill or Higgers would fit well just to hold down the fort for a couple of weeks until either Harris, Lucas or Quade gets fit. I think playing them at 10 would be more advisable than wider (someone suggested Samo to start at 12) as the 10 channel will probably be used quite a bit by the Force and we really need to plug it up instead of risking a rookie there getting a close up view of Pococks palm as he crashes off an inside ball.

The Force have a great forward pack so the game will probably be played tight anyway and they don't exactly have a world class backline either.

Who is the best 10 to play the possible field position game that Link is hinting at? I doubt it is Taps, who kicks higher than he does long!

I'd be happy for them to play a tighter game with field position. Genia to use his forward runners in close and the ball to go barely past 12 unless they are right on the back foot. Still attack wide from turnover ball or kicks though.

As I said in another thread, Reds V Bulls, Murphy was behind a forward pack that was going backwards, and for even an accomplished 5/8 that's a hard act to play well from. Look at some of QC (Quade Cooper)'s games when he has been behind a backward pack - not very impressive either.
I'd keep Murphy in for the Force game.

Yeh, I think Murphy needs another chance. It is very hard behind a beaten pack. Does anyone know more on Frisby. He seems to me to struggle with off the ground passes, yet he adds a new dimension in attack albeit sometimes full of risk. Does he play elsewhere?

Can play fullback, but that doesn't really solve any injury issues.

Frankly, fellow Reds comrades here, when we think about it all for Rnd 6, near on the biggest planning issue is who's going to kick the fucking ball off the tee now Lance is gone. This match will not, in our wildest dreams, get the Reds so many tries that place kicking is of incidental interest, in fact I'll bet it will be of decisive points importance (as it so often is, just ask the 2012 Tahs).

The reason I ask is that I would not be moving Genia away from 9. Frisby seems better suited in the open and I would have preferred him elsewhere. Also Genia can't play 10

Frisby is actually a pretty good goal kicker, was he on the field when Genia took the conversion? I've seen him down at GPS after training slotting kicks from the sideline, including drop kicks...you're allowed to do that right?

I can't agree more. If the Reds play 10 man rugby and keep it tight all day long, then they MUST have someone who can kick from the tee. Otherwise that style of play will be useless. You play tight and force the defence to make a mistake, which you then throw the ball to your kicker to capitalise on. Playing 10 man rugby against the Force also plays into their hands. Their pack is capable of soaking up enormous amounts of pressure. The Forces problem is that they don't know how to relieve it.

However, we are having so many distribution problems out wide. Basic ball skills and security have deserted the team at the moment, which makes it hard to get any sort of momentum.

On another note, I believe our so-so start to the season is due not only to our loss of players in key positions, but also due to our opposition. We have lost the edge that put us ahead of other teams. Last year, we were far and away the fittest team in the comp. While the Reds fitness levels have not dropped, other teams have caught up in terms of fitness. So we are no longer able to run opposition packs ragged, which is exactly what we did last year. The big question is how do we maintain an edge with the cattle available?

Lance faces three months on the sidelines after his left leg was trapped awkwardly under him in a tackle.

Ben Lucas (hamstring), Mike Harris (hamstring), Anthony Fainga'a (foot), Quade Cooper (knee), Chris F'Sautia (hamstring), UJ Seuteni (hamstring) and Peter Hynes (knee) will also remain on the injured list next weekend, while winger Digby Ioane still has three games to serve of his suspension.

Winger Aidan Toua has been cleared to resume training but McKenzie is hesitant to rush him back after six weeks out with ankle damage.
When he is back put him infront of Morahan and Davies, who have both been poor.

I said this when Davies was selected for the Wallabies which I thought was completely the wrong decision but Davies is just a sprinter who thinks he can play rugby. He really lacks in rugby skills and size.

I think the Reds would be crazy to play Higgers in the centres.

Against one of the best back rows in Super Rugby, they need their best back rower playing against Pocock, Hodgson et al.

Whilst I am sure he would go fine in the backs, they'd be better off keeping him where he can provide most impact and playing someone less experienced at 13.

Missing 5 and making 0 tackles against the Bulls. Ouch.

In fact some of the stats on the weekend are amazing(ly bad). Simmons - 2 tackles, 4 misses, 2 runs for nothing and 2 rucks and mauls.

Please start, Van. Or find another second rower. Or start Samo instead of Simmons. Or start Higginbotham instead of Simmons and run Gill on at 6. Or something.

Reds boys are not doing themselves any favours re the soon to be Wallaby selections;
IMO

Certain:
Horwill
Higgers
Slipper
Genia (but on form should he be)
Digby

Maybe: Gill, Shipperly and Hansen

Reckon Saia, Simmons, Daley, Samo, Robinson, Taps, Ant, Morahan, Davies (for sure) have not been playing well enough (yet) to be seriously considered.

I thought Taps was going quite well, would have put him on the "Possibles" list..
