Australia's best IMO is Browning closely followed by Latu, Roach and Holloway in the forwards. Lucas, Frisby and Sautia in the backs

Latu off for a well earned rest, replaced by 17 Pettowa Paraka. Have I told anyone how impressed I was with his performance today. I think MOM for Aust #1.

He does a bit, but there's a hell of a size difference.
That was a bit of a thrashing but I thought the Aussie boys did well for their first tournament game.
I thought that all the front rowers were terrific. The older guys started and the Oz Schools front row of 2011 finished the game. I didn't realise that they were playing under the trial laws whereby, in effect, a 2nd front row had to be on the bench.
1. Latu was the star player and not just for his scrummaging: he anticipated a lot around the breakdown and pounced on opportunities whilst opponents watched, and talk about abrasive! 2. Roach was not far behind him though he threw 3 throws to the lineout not straight.
4. Holloway had a good hard game and so did 6 Browning, who was often brutal and must have hurt players he tackled or ran into. Gill was Gill, but I would like to see a bit more from 5. Cummins and 8. Melrose in their next match.
As against Samoa, the Oz scrum dominated, in the first half especially, and not by tricks but good hard straight pushing. Maul defence was not great but it's a bit of a national trait.
The passing of 9. Lucas was not sharp but at least he nearly always passed in front of the receivers. 10. Godwin had an excellent opening quarter but his goal kicking was spotty. UJS played there in the second half and was better than when he was playing fullback in the trial. It will be good to see him start in the next match so that he can "own" the game.
12. Apo passed more in a match than I had ever seen from him and when he didn't, he was too wriggly for a lot of Scots tacklers, though he missed one tackle himself that lead to a try. Commentator Andy Capostagno drooled over 13. CFS, who seemed like he was operating on a different clock from his opponents.
Frisby was every inch a fullback in the first half and you would be pressed to find anybody who didn't know him that he wasn't a specialist in the position. His wide pass to Holloway for the opening try was that of a class player. He looks a worthy backup for Holland, who had better front up for the 2nd game else he could be the one doing the backing up.
There were about 4 serious defensive blunders, and 1 led to a try. The tackling was brutal most of the time though, and better than their opponents. The Scots were also reluctant to come off their line and therefore got over powered by runners on several occasions. The Oz offloading was excellent and it wasn't just hot potato stuff to blokes standing still - they were running forward.
In all: an excellent first game of a tournament though one has to take account of the lowly standard of their opponents.

Ireland were very impressive in beating hosts SA 23-19. Despite kicking out on the full 3 times in the open minutes JJ Hanrahan recovered to have a very good game. Ireland got 2 charge down tries, 1 in either half from Coughlan and Henderson.
SA seemed to be surprised by the physicality and aggression from Ireland in defense and at the breakdown. Ireland bossed the lineout and for most of the game the scrum was pretty even until a couple at the end where SA took control.

The Pumas have quite a history of beating the French. The fact that there developing players can do it spells great things for their inclusion in what ever this new comp is called again.

That was arguably one of the best talks I have seen given by a captain on his first go. He even gave a rye smile when he uttered a cliché & knew he could do better.
The Aussie U20 side won the game after the 5 minutes with the second try. After some of the rugby I have seen this year the interplay, enthusiasm and commitment was refreshing. Although not polished that was an
impressive display for their first game in this tournament.
What I didn't like was Gill being the last line of defence in a couple on instances. However, I have the feeling that the U20’s played better than the wallabies will tonight.

The Australian team were athletes through and through, jeez they were explosive.
The Scots looked to be a similar size but just didn't have that explosiveness and since they were so thoroughly physically beaten they didn't get a chance to play rugby. With a couple more performances like that they'll get demoted to the Junior World Trophy.

I think I would have to agree with this. Latu had a huge impact on the game, the forwards smashed the Scots early and this set the tone for the match. Browning is continuing on from his schoolboy exploits. Sautia always looked dangerous, Frisby looked the goods early and then muffed a few things by going to far from the percentage play. I don't often disagree with Lee but I was impressed with Lucas. His passing was fantastic and he continually got front foot ball. It will be interesting to see what the next few games throw up, I'll definitely be prepared to stay up and watch

Big Holloway looked pretty good in the forwards for mine. Quite mobile, made many strong runs. As did young Curtis Browning.
In the backs I was suprised how well Frisby went at fullback, he was oustanding in the first half, but then started making mistakes in the second. Godwin didn't really impress me that much, his kicking game looks awkward and nothing special about his play making. UJ looked pretty decent when he came on, so I wouldn't mind seeing him get a game at 10.
