What happened at Footscray that made them turn from rubbish to a club that does a whole lot with limited resources in just a couple of years?

Anybody an insider? I'd love to hear and I'm sure ambitious clubs like Wydnam, Eltham, and Geelong as well as battlers like Boroondara and Uni would love to hear too.

Not an insider by any means, but people like Wayne Hunt would be my guess. Coupled with a bunch of boys that want to have a crack while being labelled perennial underdogs, playing with some decent players like Melbourne, Shane and Tim sprinkled in there it's always going to work. They were unlucky last season and have come on leaps and bounds this season. When you go out there you can tell they are all mates, play for each other and there's a good sprit at the club. They also travel well and always come back to our clubhouse for a drink and speeches afterwards, something a few clubs seem to have forgotten is part of playing rugby!

Got rid of their BOH staff and started again with players and staff who wanted to see the club do well. Basically they told all the trouble makers to piss off.

Can anyone actually see Prem division's numbers changing next year? Boroondara are compeditive in 1sts (but admittedly no other Divs), Uni have such a huge history, and Endeavour came in as a project 2 years ago.

It wouldn't make sense to boot any of them.

The referees I know have made an effort to stay behind for the speeches to get to know their "customers" which I think is a great idea.

Some referees yes, not many down in the club rooms at Seaford on the weekend post match. Was more talking about the players though, let's face it there are good clubs and bad clubs and if you play then you know who they are....clubs should make an effort to get back and respect the oppositions efforts in hosting for the day.

They are trying, I definitely know that the A panel (or most of them) have said they will stay for at least the speeches if there are any.

I love having a couple of beers after a game down at Souths (especially on Hungi night).

I did say becoming. Let's just say you can tell which schools have the scholarships, Scotch isn't one.

House should get through, one bonus point will see it on for and against. And can't see BH beating Footscray actually.

Interesting to note is the "relegation danger zone" mentioned on the VRU site........

Matches of Round 17 of the Dewar Shield Premier Division Competition this Saturday are as follows:

• Box Hill v Endeavour Hills at Sparks Reserve, Box Hill
• Melbourne v Power House at Romanis Reserve, Prahran
• Moorabbin v Southern Districts at Keys Rd Reserve, Moorabbin
• Boroondara v Melbourne University at JH Gardiner Reserve, Hawthorn
• Footscray v Harlequin at the Henry Turner Memorial Reserve, Footscray

All matches are scheduled to commence at 3.10pm. With two rounds to be played before the six team finals only two competition points separate 2nd to 5th position. For the finals 1st and 2nd positions enjoy the first week rest and hosting rights for the second week. Melbourne has achieved 1st place so the reward of 2nd place is there for Footscray, Southern Districts, Harlequin and Moorabbin - but two wins from two rounds plus bonus points will prove necessary to sort it out.
There are two critical matches this weekend in this regard. One of these matches is match of the round 2nd place Footscray against 4th place Harlequin. The second critical match is 5thplace Moorabbin playing 3rd place Southern Districts. Both are worthy of of determining finals matches and with soft grounds at both locations should be close and hard.
Footscray has earned the respect of every team in the competition and is peaking at the right of the season. It lost narrowly to Harlequin 24-22 in the first round clash and there is no reason to suggest that this game will be any different – except perhaps this time Footscray is entitled to start favourites at home.
Moorabbin is also in a similar position in that it lost its first round clash to Southern Districts 19-15 but is confident of reversing this at home. South’s played an excellent second half against Power House last week, which gave away two yellows and a red card to surrender a first half lead to South’s and the match. South’s has the goods to win and progress well in the finals but is not playing at intensity for 80 minutes and will need to do so against a confident Moorabbin. Moorabbin is entitled to be favourites at home.
Other matches are inconsequential to the positioning for the finals but there are some very good match-ups. Melbourne v Power House should be interesting as undefeated Melbourne is in cruise mode doing nothing more than ensuring victory, so Power House is not without its chances of an upset. Can’t see it though, Melbourne to win.
Box Hill and Endeavour Hills should be close if both teams turn up with their A game. Box Hill at home. In the remaining match two teams in the relegation danger zone Boroondara and Melbourne University may be playing for more than pride. Given Melbourne University’s improving form of late it will put it to Boroondara, but the Redbacks at home are favoured to record a win.

Quins are arguably the best resourced club in Melbourne and Footscray is nowhere near, it's a shame for Footscray but it can only be good for Vic rugby to have a staple club like Quins performing.
