Super Rugby's NSW Waratahs have emerged as a shock home possibility for code-hopper Israel Folau.
The former Australian rugby league international quit AFL's Greater Western Sydney Giants last month claiming he wanted to return to the NRL with Parramatta.
But after stunning Eels management on Friday with the announcement he would not join them for the 2013 season or beyond - despite the club and the NRL agreeing on a deal that would fit within Parramatta's salary cap - Super Rugby are believed to have emerged as the frontrunners for his services.
The Eels are furious, believing Folau used them as a stepping stone to rugby union where the Waratahs have firmed as favourites to win his signature.

Folau has always maintained he wanted to continue to live and play in Sydney where he is close to his church and his mates, giving Super Rugby battlers NSW - who ended the 2012 season on an eight-game losing streak - the inside running.
His acquisition would give the ailing Waratahs, who have struggled for crowds and media space in an increasingly crowded market, a real boost.
"Are the Waratahs on the cards? Definitely ...", a source close to Folau's camp told AAP

Agree p.Tah. He knocked back a contract reported to be worth $3m over four years with the Eels. He won't get anywhere near $750K from the Tahs unless there is some serious third party deals.

He would probably generate some publicity. But I would save the $$$ and rather make a play for SBW in 2014.

Could be one of those negotiating tactics that managers like to use.

Do the Tahs need to spend big bucks on an outside back?
Should they spend it on an untried commodity?
Is he worth more than the Eels are reputed to have offered him?
Think I would pass if I was given a vote.
Although I am sure he will succeed in Rugby if he commits to it.

He's too much of a gamble atm, I'd rather the French clubs take the gamble with the $$ first

Well send him to the Reds then.

If he lands at an Oz super rugby team, I won't be at all surprised if he's in Green and Gold by the time the Lions roll into town.

Shit, it would be an awesome coup for the ARU and Tahs if it comes off. Anything that helps the Tahs profile in Western Sydney has got to be good for the game.

If the Tah's as part of his contract give him ownership rights of the Tahs HQ for the length of his contract, then they pay him to use the HQ, that's fully legit, right?

I don't give a shit about a 'marketing' recruitment. The guy has never played rugby in his life, he's been out of the NRL for 2 years, to think he'd be up to Super rugby straight away is just an insult to rugby. SBW was pretty bad in his first year at Toulon. That was straight from the NRL and SBW is more gifted imo. There's no tries to be scored from kicks in rugby.

I think it is a mistake for the Tahs (or any Aus franchise) to potentially be throwing big bucks at him, being an unknown rugby commodity.
As I am on record saying elsewhere, big potential, obviously talented, but the Tahs really need a good 10 (if we're looking at backs) not another outside back.
He'll probably make a decent fist of rugby (wherever he goes).
I'm not crazy about the Tahs chasing with too many dollars.

The tahs don't need him.

If it were the rebels or the force stumping up it would be a good idea as they need outside backs but the tahs have too many as it is.

Little background, I guess a winger at best, so instead of Turner or Mitchell?

Unlikely, so a bench spot? A trillion dollars to sit on the bench?

The bloke could possibly get to being a SBW type of 12. However that would require a lot of work. Work that his AFL stint showed he didn't have the heart to put in.

Its bewildering why they want to throw big money at an unknown league product, especially one who is purely and outside back at that.

Also, he doesnt strike me as the pure and innocent package he is marketed as.. He is only 24 and he has already made 2 high profile moves(Storm-Broncos & Broncos - GWS).
He walks out on his AFL contract and makes a mess of the Parra signing..

Makes Quade Cooper look like a comparative saint.

He was willing to go to the Eels for less than market value but NRL wouldn't allow it. I reckon we are talking a cheap deal here. He made his money in ping pong, now he just wants to stay in Sydney with his mates and church.

Might as well try to make Usain Bolt play for the Tahs. Apparently he is fast and would be good on the wing, as well as good for marketing.

Usain might be good but would you want to spend your hard earned drinking tokens on him on a chance he might be good?

We have Mitchell, Turner, Betham, Kingston, Hodge, Crawford, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) as outside backs already. It's just pointless to get Folau who could be worse than all of them. We need a backrower, not a back.

Lol come on.. Why'd he do the runner in Parra then, they were finding room to fit him in when he bailed.. It was anything but the act of a guy just looking to hang with his mates and family.

Why'd he leave the Storm? Money
Why'd he leave the Broncos? Money

Th only reason he didn't stay in the AFL is because he knows his market value was only going to drop further.

This bloke is all about money, I wouldn't sign him unless its for a minimum of 2 years... I don't want him using rugby union for 9months just to inflate his salary whilst NRL clubs find room to sign him under their caps.
