135kg? You mean I could put on another 35 kg and still look that good? Amazing!

If he can be taught rugby skills to match his physique he will be awesome. Timani would be the same height and 14kg lighter!

he was part of that Hills Sports High School side who were a bigger forward pack than the Tahs

Let's not get too excited about Willie; his trouble as a schoolboy player was that he was a bit of a gentle giant, though he was devastating when he made a contribution at the right moment.

We have to see this affable young man playing 1st Grade on a regular basis before we can assess him properly; apart from one academy game I haven't seen him since he left school.

Maybe Bruce can shed some light on his progress during 2012. Or anybody else ???

I'm guessing that the new Tah regime must have been impressed by him in a hit out they had against the National Academy players from NSW.

Here's what Andrew Blades thought of Will's scrummaging practice efforts yesterday.

Just kidding; it was something about his neck position.

That guy is 135kg? Must have a big frame, sign him up

It is an interesting question, do you want giants or mobile athletes?

The Kiwis have gone for the "b" option for a while with great success, the Boks have always gone for the giants.

I actually think athleticism, technique and workrate should be the criteria, not size.

Agreed. But if if all that comes in a package of that size. It could be devastating to see on the pitch.

people like willie usually find that they have been playing against people smaller for so long that when they step up to the mens they struggle to cope with the fact that their physical power will be matched.

Pity the poor buggers who have to lift him in the line out

I dont recall Willie playing at all last year - maybe injured. Although I did see him play the odd colts game the year before and he is massive. I dont think uni colts used him as a jumper in the lineout though.

Agree with Lee, the ultimate test for all these boys is to have some serious 1st grade time and see how they go. The fact that they are in this training group or that training group is a bit irrelevant apart from presumably getting some good exposure good coaches and training techniques.

People who fork out to go to the games should get access first.

It looks like it maybe too late as the priority window closes on Monday 17 December at 8pm.

Considering the Tahs get les then 10'000 members, I don't think there is any threat of members(game attending) missing out on tickets...

That's too much weight for professional rugby. Douglas and Palu are about 120kg each, that's what Big Willie should be aiming for.

But he doesn't look like he's carrying 135kg. If I had 135kg on me I'd be wearing 5XL shirts and a 120 cm belt. He looks like he's just all lean muscle mass. If it is lean muscle mass then he should (note selection of the word) be very strong and very explosive.

But Lee is right. He needs to channel his physical advantage up against some 120kg first graders and see if he can learn to use his physical aggression to be an effective rugby player. He's on my watch list because of his potential, but until he can turn that potential into actual performance in grade he's not ready for a Super squad.

I do like the way that the Tahs are inviting players with potential to train with the squad. They'll find out quite a bit from opposed training I would think.

Props always blame their second-rowers for problems in scrums. Perhaps that's the message.

I think one has to seriously question the players the Tahs are inviting to their training group. Like Intruder outlined, they are not the top crop in the Shute Shield.

In regards to Skelton, he's only 19 and they may see him as a project. Evidently AJ Gilbert is there and I'd say he's been on of the better Shield players of recent seasons and Samu was competing for the final EPS spot only a month or so ago. They don't seem all that bad to me. We also need to take into account that just because someone look the goods in the Shield doesn't necessarily mean there able to play the game plan at Super Rugby level.

At 6'8, if you're not over 120kg, you should probably be looking to a basketball court rather than a rugby field.
Wrong Braveheart81.
2 of World Rugby's leading locks Brodie Retallick and Eben Etzebeth are both 6'8" and 120kg.
Another Sam Whitelock is 6'8" and 115kg.
Ali Williams is 6'8" and 111kg
