Ebersohn is on the bench. What is it with Foley benching marque signings from South Africa?

Angus Gardner and Andrew Lees. Lord please give me strength. These guys were both colts refs 6 years ago. Shows that if you dont want any mates this is the way to make a spectacle of yourself. Fucking tossers.

that's very poor considering AFL and NRL haven't started.. I think some kind of AFL games were on though

Thought this was a pretty decent game it kick off the season. Force didn't go down without a fight. Their forward pack looked solid as usual. Both teams showed some grit. that game was more entertaining than the average aus derby last year an that's a good sign

The force impressed me, Foley and Meehan have got them playing some decent footy. That being said, it doesn't take a genius to realise godwin is a shithouse goal kicker. His kicking form at the U20 last year was horrible and tonight was no different. Alcock and Mathewson both quality purchases and if they stay uninjured I suspect the force will get their moneys worth.

As for the rebels, they won the game on the back of some quality players, O'Connor in particular whose kicking was superb (on a side note: if I was robbie deans he would be the first player I pencilled in on the wallaby team sheet).

Pyle had a good game and stood out as the lynchpin of the pack. As someone said above - he looks like the perfect partner for horwill, although I have big wraps of douglas after his performances last year. I think the rebels are a team that will get exposed badly against strong mobile forward packs with quick backrows. As such, I don't expect them to win many games against the likes of the stormer, brumbies, reds or crusaders (if McCaw is playing).

^ I also thought pyle played well, although he seemed to be hanging out on the wing with suspicious regularity.

I was pretty happy with that performance. Godwin looked great. Shouldn't be a goal kicker but everything else was good. The Force backs played a lot better than they did last year. It would have been nice to have come away with a win and I can't help but feel the Force team played better than the Rebels team but at least it wasn't an embarrassment. Hopefully Cummins, Hodgson and McMeniman will add a lot more value to the team. Our line-out was very average in the first half. Ebersohn's few minutes were disappointing. It will be interesting to see how Tupou goes at 15.

Really liked Pyle and Jones. Rebel's kick-off receipt was superb. JO'C was mostly very good. Kingi also good. Somehow thing Kingi is a bit wasted on the wing. Thought Ged Robinson also had a good game. I think a Sidey/Inman midfield won't do you guys much justice. Would it be worth moving JO'C back to 12 and having Kingi at fullback?

Eight years of losing the season opener :(

It's a shame the rebels havent got a decent flyhalf because beale is a full back and O'Connor is a centre or a wing.

Not a bad game. Force still have MMM and HB to come pack which is positive. I like there mindset but I think it will take time for it to settle but it is all positive for them. They are going to have some selection headaches in that back row.

Rebels. They were their own worst enemies for large parts of that game. Wow they conceded some average penalties. They did well sorting through it though. Luke Jones and Pyle were fantastic.

This sort of abuse just isn't on. We don't accept it for players, so we don't accept it for refs either.

Comment on their performance by all means, but refrain from any personal attacks please.

Just got back from the game, not sure how it looked on tv but the first half was extremely frustrating as a Rebels fan. All credit to the force, their players I wrote off as no names dominated a lot of the first half through some solid work from the forwards combined with some awful unforced errors from the rebels (JOC (James O'Connor) included). Alby, Alcock and Godwin were all very impressive, apart from the woeful kicking for goal.

Second half was a lot more entertaining. Pyle continues to impress me, his mixture of loose and tight would be a perfect foil to the tight head of horwill, timani or douglas. Kingi showed some flashes of brilliance, hopefully he stays fit. Fuglistaller's defensive work seemed pretty good too, he's not exactly Pocock but he seemed to be actively going for turnover ball which is something the rebs have been missing in an openside. JOC (James O'Connor) had a great second half, he shook of the rust from the first half and his boot was nearly flawless.

Higgers and Beale seemed fairly anonymous, the only time I really noticed them was the yellow card and the forward pass. Defense out wide and ball handling were again an issue. The lineout and scrum seemed solid, only mucked up one attacking lineout from memory and turned over a few defensive ones at critical points.

It did seem like the same old Rebs vs Force game though, occasional attacking brilliance with some shoddy defense just overcame consistent average play. I think with the return of Hodgo, MMM and the Honey Badger the force could surprise a few teams, the Rebs as always need to sort their defense and handling if they want to win against better opposition.

Though a fair few mistakes, it wasn't a bad game in my opinion. Not the usual dirge Australian derbies become. Both sides would hope that they have some improvement in them going forward I would imagine.
