true, but if it hasn't worked 8 times, why do it for the 9th?

Well it's worked for them on at least 4 occasions this year & worked for the first try last night. But, they should have put it back in the bag later in the game I agree.

Which is more cynical, I ask myself? A twelve man maul, or slowing down the ball? They are both a blight on the game.

You think something like this don't belong in rugby?

Apart from the 2011 Grand Final, I cannot remember being so exhausted from watching a football game.

As a Reds fan I am quite frustrated as we had so many opportunities, but at the same time I acknowledge the great defensive display from the Brumbies.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say these aren't only the best two teams in Australia, but currently the best in the competition.

Anyway, in terms of Wallaby selections, and performances, here is how I saw it turn out.

1- Alexander > Holmes
2- Moore > Hanson
3- Slipper > Palmer (Slipper is immense week-in-week-out)
4- Simmons > Kimlin
5- Horwill > Carter
6- Mowen > Quirk (even though he was wearing 8)
7- Gill > Smith (just nudges him out)
8- Shatz > Auelua (take notice Deans, Shatz is better then Dennis)
9- Genia > White
10- Cooper > To'omua
11- Ioane > Tomane
12- Lealiafano > Tapuai
13- Fainga'a/Kuridriani (both were poor I thought)
14- Davies > Speight
15- Mogg > Lance (what a freak)

That's just from last night.

they could have come back to it, but sometimes challenging other areas can allow that opportunity later back at the maul as the Brumbies don't know exactly what they are going to do next

As much as an anti climax a draw feels for all involved I think it was a fair result for last nights game. Reds had ample opportunity to win & the Brumbies defense was just too good. Everything else is coulda, shoulda, woulda. I witnessed an exciting game that pretty much had it all & am very happy to see two Australian teams battling it out at the top of their games for the top of the table. Lets hope it continues into the year!

I appreciate that the ref could have been harsher, the challenge is some of those "cynical" penalties aren't. They are as much the fault of attacking side as well, a lot of the Brumbies disruption was as much the fault of pretty average, loose mauling as the Brumbies driving units off their feet. They were all over the shop at times.

Anywho, I still think it was the Reds fault, they made the dumb decisions, they chose not to collect the points when they had the chance to accumulate.

You know the Brumbies would have because, they play a more ruthless, considered game; and it kept them in it last night.

I have no problems with the maul issues. It is the slowing down of the ruck and the offside that I saw as 'cynical'. There was one time when I counted two Brumbies in line with Genia and another beside the ruck, and yet the ball was still in!

The maul like any rugby skill need to be coached and I would think due to it being seen as not entertaining its not given the attention to or its being coached out of players. The Reds may not have been as effective as some would agree but it do add another option to your armory and let the opposition defense think. You can be 9 times predictable and the 10th time do something which catches defenses out. A maul is good at 2 things. Pulling in defenders who fan out and making the McLoiter suspects quickly run back to get onside. Just watch the off the ball movements in that picture I posted of the 8 Brooke and the one fellow at far end running back from his loiter post to get behind it.

They were going to go away from it once, when Lilo was binned they threw to the back of the lineout, but the throw went long.

They should have used the backs a few more times in that last 20, although there was one occasion were they wanted to as the Reds had a 5 on 3, but they couldn't get the ball out of the ruck.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned To'omua bombing a certain try in the 1st half, while Lilo was in the bin, after yet another great break from Mogg, man that guys got pace & a step! The Reds defense was at 6's & 7's and the Brumbies had a 4 on 1 overlap & To'omua inexplicably stepped back inside to heavy traffic. That right there showed me he's not up to Wallaby honours just yet.

No - but being able to defend competently in the front line at 10 would certainly see Cooper more involved. He could learn a lot from Foley and Tooma in this regard.

Reds lost a lineout inside the Brumbies 22 in the first half and Cooper made an excellent tackle on Smith who caught it at the back. Quelled a lot of my worry about his defence in that channel.

The only concerns regarding Mogg up until this point was his defence, and I think last night showed that we shouldn't be worrying too much after he put himself into the position to make two try saving tackles on Davies.........

I haven't been watching it that closely, but I reckon Quade is defending far better than he has in the past. He doesn't do those embarrassing flail-at-the-man tackles. He also seems to consistently get a good hit on. But regardless of whether he's back at 15 for counter-attack purposes or not, we just don't get to see him in the line at 10 enough.

just rewatched the game (sober this time). game of the season so far!

Re Gill v Smith - not much in it. Both were quality. If I had pick a winner I'd probably give it to Smith by a Bee's dick but really I think you're splitting hairs. I will say that I was astounded that Smith wasn't sent off at around the 65min mark. cynical stuff

Ioane looks in great form.

Really hope these two sides make up the majority of the Wallabies 22.

I don't think Gill was better than Smith....... I thought both were pretty even last night for different reasons......

But I certainly wouldn't rate Davies better than Speight......

Davies got some good opportunities due to some great work from his inside backs, but he blew a couple of tries that Speight probably would score if in the same position.........

There are already 52 comments on the match review on the front page......... I can imagine what's being said.........

The break where To'omua got knocked out was a Davies stuff up. The break started around the Reds 22, when Davies passed back into Genia who put on the pace to beat his man. Genia ran more or less parallel to the sideline, about 5m away from it and Davies decides to cut inside in support. In the end he is only just tackled, but if he had stayed on his wing it would have been a simple draw and pass from Genia that would have put Davies away to be untouched under the posts.

His game was ok, but I'm putting him down for two bombed tries.

Fair points, Gill & Smith were fairly even, but I thought Gill edged him slightly, but I can see your point, it was very close.

In regards to Speight I thought he was fairly quiet, whilst Rocket had a lot of involvements, that's the only real reason for that selection.

I don't think you could play Mogg and Cooper in the same backline.

It has to be Cooper and a solid player like Lance. And if its Mogg he needs someone like Foley, To'omua or Lilo at 10.

I think Australia has yet unrealised potential with cooper at 10, but I don't think we will see it with Deans gameplan, so from that point of view I think Mogg is probably a good shout for the 15.

All comes down to what beales doing though.
