Yeah, but why does it have to be for three years? And at what point does he stop becoming a 'mercenary' and start becoming a 'rugby player'? 1 year? 2 years? 5 years? What is the difference between Joe Tomane and Israel Folau?

If he signs with league before the Lions series (which he may or may not do), then I don't think we should pick him. But if not I think we should- it doesn't matter how long he has been playing the game, if he is one of the best 15/22 rugby players in the country then he deserves the jersey.
.

At the point where he commits to rugby for longer then 12 months... The Bulldogs have come out and said they have been in talks with Izzy for 2014, it's likely they aren't the only club, who knows what other clubs/codes he has been in talks with..

Currently his stint in rugby just seems like a opportunity to negotiate a a better NRL contract. If he stays then awesome, select him on merit, but don't give him a Wallaby jersey as an enticement to stay in the code.

Israel Folau is currently playing rugby. If he is playing well enough, he should be considered for higher honours.

He, and his manager, would be pretty stupid to do anything to jeopardise his chances of representing his nation in the biggest international series in this country for a decade.

We would be pretty stupid not to consider him for selection just because he might be gone at the end of the season.

The ABs do not seem to have much trouble grasping the concept. Why should we?

I'd pick folau on the wing if he is signed on for next year. Otherwise I'd give the honor to someone else. It's not like we are short on quality wingers.
Here comes a guy who played a different code and you are going to throw him in at the deep end. Would you (a) Award him a 3 year contract and hope he don't fail or (b) award a year contract incase he fails and then get him to sign a extensions if he performs well?

Remember when Quade signed with Parramatta? What a black day that was for rugby.

NRL clubs talk all sorts of shit and the Sydney press salivates at every morsel. I'm sure that the Doggies have approached Folau's team and I'm sure others have too. Why don't we all just settle down until something gets announced. THEN we can go ape shit.

I don't think Izzy is an international 15 simply because he hasn't demonstrated any tactical kicking ability. I'd have him in the 22 though. If Deans doesn't care about any of the back 3 being able to kick, imagine Ioane, Tomane and Folau running the ball back at you (add Speight in the mix on the EOYT) . Is Deans going to to try and run everything back at the Lions (like NSW have done this year)? We also have the Moggster as an option at 15 who can kick the ball a long way and run. I'm assuming JOC (James O'Connor) will play 10.

If Izzy plays, I think it'll be on the wing. Mogg or JOC (James O'Connor) would be my preference at 15, although Izzy would be fine if there's an injury.

May I extend the definition of 'squad' to one of total Wallaby organisational capability, just for a moment?

What REALY MUST CHANGE AND NOW in the preparation for all of 2013's Tests (especially the BIL) is much more fundamental than who plays 12 or 15 or such like.

It is surely this: a major factor underpinning the obvious deterioration in the attacking skill, prowess and game success of the recent years Wallabies' attack is clearly, without a shadow of a doubt, the fact that the Wallabies have no specialist and dedicated Attack/Backs coach, and have never had one since 2007. Deans himself has largely assumed this role and the most deliberately polite description of his demonstrated success in it would be one based upon the notion 'he's just too busy with other tasks to do this one well'.

I can think of no other successful (or otherwise) national coaching team (or even S15 team) that does not appoint a dedicated backs/attack coach with known credentials in that skill area.

The no-specialist-attack-coach model hasn't worked and what is now critical is that Deans appoints such a support coach pre-Lions (and ideally for all of 2013) and, whilst there are conflicts in this suggestion, the two candidates who are best qualified and who could do the job and are available now are McKay or Larkham.

Pre-BIL, adding this long-overdue capability to the Wallabies organisation is even more critical than would normally be the case in that (a) there is only a three week intensive preparation period available pre Test 1 and (b) amazingly the ARU has arranged no Wallaby trial games of any kind pre-June 22 for the BIL Wallabies squad and thus a specialist coach with skills in designing and training in excellence in attack and back line play is simply essential and (c) the Wallaby attack and quality of ensemble back line play since at least early 2011 has looked ordinary at best, and weak and exposed at worst.

The development and progress of the Reds, Brumbies and (just now) the 2013 Waratahs highlights the paramount importance of pre-eminent and complete coaching teams in realising the immense potential of Australia's rugby players. All of these coaching teams clearly possess competent attack/backs coaches playing specialist roles for their supervising head coaches. These head coaches by their actions make it obvious that it would be inconceivable for them to progress their players without an adequate team of specialist coaches advising and supporting them.

Today I learned that the Wallabies have no backs coach and I actually don't have anything else to say I'm in a bit of a state of shock

Pretty sure I just lost whatever faith I had left in the ARU

Isn't Deans a backs coach?

NFL Coaching staffs get fired and restructured pretty regularly based around poor performance or exceptional performance. Do you not believe we should choose our coaching staff based on merit and then build the structure around their strengths and weaknesses?

If you believe Dingo is a strong enough backs coach to both facilitate a high level of play and engagement with our backs as well as manage the entire national setup I fail to see evidence to support it.

What about 2010, where we were tearing it up in the backs and regularly scoring 4 or 5 tries a game?
