Saw the CHSvCAS game this afternoon. Not going to comment on individual players, as I'm no expert. However, what I will say is the CHS boys had an impressive air of quiet confidence about them. Very business like and plugged away with great control of themselves, and the game overall. Excellent defence overall, and nice composure even when defending their own line for long spells. The scrum held it's own, just, but I think CAS had a slight edge. Lineouts were pretty evenly matched, thought there were a couple of confused calls on both sides. CHS did look a little vulnerable out on the right wing in the second half where CAS made 50-70 metre forrays several times. Kicking game was excellent and made good options to take penalty kicks for 3 points several times. The kicks were improved from last Sunday with I think 100% success when going for the sticks. Nice work overall from CHS. They should give GPS a good shake I reckon.
Looks like the tour to NZ may have paid off for the CHS boys.
I have just down a quick head count of previous posts.
Of CHS I and II boys only 12 were in the NZ touring party, and 28 boys were not.
Is this because some of the boys had Loig commitments or injuries when the tour was on?

Can't speak for the 28, but I know at least 2-3 potential tourists had a school rugby tour to Canada during the same holiday period, planned for 2 years. Suspect there were multiple reasons for non- attendance...

I thought the "touring team" was assembled prior to any trials, so that it was a invitational or a development team, rather than a rep team.

Review #1 of yesterday's CHS 1s v CAS 1s game at Cranbrook yesterday:
Feedback from my observations on C.A.S games yesterday
From past history C.H.S always deliver a strong motivated group of boys who normally do not have the fitness for the full 70 min. C.H.S seconds fell into this category which gave our boys the opportunity to get back into the game. In my opinion Brent Winkler had an outstanding game at 9.
Ben O’Donnell played well but had a lot more time with the pressure dropping due to fitness from his opponents, a little disappointed with the amount of ball he received in second half, not going past 12 more than once.
Congratulations to the C.A.S forwards who played a much bigger opponents, in the end they got the upper hand as the game progressed with their fitness prevailing they gave it everything they had, you noticed this when they replaced injured players on the C.A.S 1 side, they had very little left in the tank when coming on to the field.
As mentioned before the C.A.S 1 side lacked unity among the forwards, commitment at the breakdowns was slow and injuries did not help, the C.H.S side dominated upfront with additional strong runs at the centers who spent a lot of time defending with little or no help from the loose forwards. The number 9 Stephen Kirkby had a lot of pressure throughout the entire game, the little ball he did receive was always on the back foot with no platform to shield him from his opponents I doubt that Brett Winkler would have done any better under the same circumstances.
This pressure flowed down the entire backline with David Smerdon getting slow ball which upset the timing of the entire black line, this was evident with the one run from Stoltz who had to break in stride to receive the ball which should have been a try under normal circumstances, was also evident with the amount of hits he received once passing the ball to his outside backs which always made many meters but were unable to finish it off due to poor timing of the ball and choices. I counted three tries that should have been scored.
C.H.S players that have impressed me number 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 they played at the tremendous pace throughout the entire game
C.A.S 14 Eddie had an excellent game with the little ball he got, 12 Stoltz, defense was solid with quick hands to get the ball out wide, 5 Leon excellent first half, 13 Connor looked dangerous on a few occasions.
Congratulations to all the boys, I hope the injuries are not too serious and that you all bounce back with a better appreciation of what it takes at the next level.

CAS 1 10 v CHS 1 25. A brutal game for CAS. I lost count after 7th player taken from field with Injuries.
CHS were solid at breakdown. CAS dropped plenty of ball. Dont think CAS boys gelled together as well as CHS. CHS obviously benefited from a game or two together previously.
Not sure how bad injury toll will be going forward. Next round of CAS comp will tell.

A very physical with CHS forwards averaging more than 5kg per man and clear intention to be physical at the breakdown.
Early penalty goal to CAS was the only time they led in the match. Harrison Williams #4 was first to leave field after 10 minutes with injured shoulder and led to a procession of replacements during the course of the match (#8, #2, #5, #15).
For the most part it was an even contest, however a period early in the second half highlighted that CAS had run out of steam as they failed to get across the advantage line and clear the aggression in defence and at the breakdown of the CHS forwards was paying dividends.
Hence not much "front foot" ball for the CAS backs - seemed to be going backwards and service from the halfback was constantly interrupted.
Not Harry Jones' best day at fullback - failed to find touch with first penalty kick and seemed to make alot of mistakes highlighted by not wanting to commit on the loose ball. Not surprising if he was carrying an injury.
Best forward for mine was Satui who carried the ball forward and scrummaged well. All the forwards tried hard including the replacements but size and aggression of the CHS pack meant that they won the day.
Best back was #14 Ellwood-Hall who always looked dangerous with the ball in hand and was strong in defence. CHS scored a couple of great individual tries on the other wing including a very clever kick and regather.
CAS backs seemed to lack structure and tended to run across field. Probably due to lack of penetration up the middle and also not getting ball on front foot.
I would definitely consider giving Brent Whicker and Ben O'Donnell an opportunity at 9 and 10 given their performance in the 2nds, even if against lesser opposition.
Outside of that, will need to see who is fit to play.

Originally 30 or so players were invited ( Oct 2012) by Chs to trial for this tour .
So obviously CHS rated these players. Yes some dropped out , haven't heard of a Canadian tour.
Yes it was called a development tour but what does it do for the boys development when 1 month prior these boys were good enough to tour NZ but not good enough to make the last 40 ?????
Also is ok for the CHS to get parents to pay $3000 plus food & spending money
Then 1 month later pay more money for their sons to go to Coffs Harbour
Knowing these tourist weren't going to get picked ?

Every year we have posts in the CHS, ISA etc etc threads on the trials whereas the posts really relate to the NSW Schools thread.
So, when the trial dates arrive, write about the game in the NSW Schools thread, not in this one.
Sure, it is fair enough to write about who should have been in a CHS team and who shouldn't have been, in this thread, but, in the main, comments on the trial matches themselves and who should make the NSW team, or shouldn't, belong in the NSW thread.

Not quite so good v ISA 1s yesterday - seemed to be a different team, so perhaps playing a tougher more aggressive side found out some flaws. Again, the CHS were vulnerable outwide with a number of ISA overlaps throughout the game. Also, some simple missed tackles in mid-field led to ISA breakouts. The CHS backs were outplayed, with a few very soft tries let through. I though the CHS forwards gave a good account of themselves and didn't take a step backwards. Great work around the ruck with good cleaning out and ball security, with a couple of good turnovers at crucial times from the hooker. The tight 5 and loosies worked hard all day and lay a good foundation at scrums, lineouts and the breakdown. Though very optimistic after the CAS match, GPS will be a bigger battle thank I was originally thinking - here's hoping CHS can put it together on the day, and the goal kicker's radar is fixed by Friday...
