I was looking through the rule book the other day and couldn't find any mention of any such rule

I could, however, find this;

"6.5.2 Red Card Offences (Dismissal from the Field). The referee shall report in writing on the Results Sheet to the school concerned and ultimately to the Executive Officer of the Association for any instance of misconduct (send-off offence) by a player. In the case of dismissal from the field where a red card has been issued the player serves an automatic one match suspension. That game must be the next scheduled GPS fixture. Further suspension may be imposed at the discretion of each school."

Seems pretty compulsory to me..

Could you find a copy of the Headmaster's Edict on-line? I've always assumed it was an actual rule and was very surprised that it wasn't.

Yes, I also had a look for any official policy or rule on the Qld GPS website when the new student commenced at ACGS and there does not seem to be any reference, policy or rules published with regards to new students starting.

Saying that, I know of one school that has deliberately not started a new boy to the school in their First XV who would be good enough because of this reason. It may just be a headmaster's handshake agreement (that some coaches are aware of and others are not).

The red card is an interesting one. In a younger age group last week a boy took to the field after he had been red carded (for foul play) in a club game the week before and had received a suspension from the judiciary during the week. I thought this would have applied to all forms of rugby, not just club. The jurisdiction of red cards and suspensions should be in the hands of a central rugby authority so that it is taken out of the hands or at discretion of schools and ensure that it is administered across all forms of the sport.

Looking forward to this weekends games, a game that really catches my eye is BSHS vs BBC. Keen to see how BBC bounces back from a dissapointing loss to Nudgee College and the same for State Highs 1 point loss to BGS. I tip BBC being too strong in the end going on to win by 10 but a cracking game of rugby it shall be.

Furthermore this is a really important game for these schools in determining who finishes 5th and who finishes 6th.

ARU u19 law details red card to a player = automatic 1 week.

The only exception is if the charge is challenged at the judiciary & proven incorrect.

With the GPS season only 3 weeks old it is a shame all the discussion here is mostly focused on scholarship programs. Sure it is an issue but let's hope the standard of rugby and the contests are more of the focus in coming weeks
Well said.

Guys, feel free to discuss recruitment, scholarships, bursaries, the gentlemen's agreements amongst headmasters on how the arms race should be moderated, poaching from other schools and yarda, yarda.

It's interesting stuff - and it's a free country, BUT DO IT IN THE SCHOLARSHIPS THREAD.

Save this thread for the rugby only - just the rugby - not how players got to the school they are playing for.

Please.

My high hopes for last week's TSS v IGS were quickly erased. Good crowd though. Hoping for a quality contest at Miskin tomorrow.

don't want to be argumentative, but this thread was opened by ippylad93 late last year for the purpose of "discussing all things GPS 2013".

I see that there is a scholarship thread, but I don't want to have to sift through all the other thousands of entries to find the ones relevant to the (Queensland) GPS.

Why can't we open a thread that discusses everything to do with the GPS, scholarships, controversy, and all without being censored by moderators? Because everything stems from the passion that the students and old boys have invested in the competition. This is the sort of nitty-gritty that people want to know.

Would such a page be tolerated by GAGR Lee Grant?

Sorry for the rant, nothing personal..

The way I see it, the only reason you could have to not post controversies and scholarships and other 'low-brow' content on this thread would be to protect those it concerns' futures.

I'm sure that many people (such as the former JPC front-rower who now attends churchie) would prefer not to be slandered on an on-line forum.

But if you're encouraging it to be posted on a different thread, then it defeats the purpose as far as I see it.

I also apologise, but I also think this is the right forum to discuss any issues that are relevant to the current season - all things GPS 2013 - particularly ones like this that threaten to drag the whole competition from what it was to a farcical mercenary joke that it is rapidly becoming - it needs to be discussed in a forum where the most readers interested or involved in the competition are.
Hopefully the more people who read it , the more chance there is of saving the comp.
Mixing a Sydney discussion and a Brisbane discussion would dilute both forums.

Because such things cause discussion of the rugby to be subordinated to round-robin conversations about the other stuff.

Moreover, the more other stuff gets mentioned the more acrimony is generated with people questioning the content of other posters on the matter and suddenly the GPS thread turns into bouts of slanging matches. When that happens schoolboys get involved and escalate the process.

That's what happened in the NSW GPS thread a couple of years ago and in most schoolboy rugby threads in Sportal around the same time. The last I looked, all schools threads in the Sportal rugby forum had been closed because of it, though that could have changed by now.

The G&G moderators had to get involved almost on an hour to hour basis in the NSW GPS thread and since we are all volunteers, it stole our time.

Then I had my best idea since I joined the forum. I postulated that we should start a separate thread for scholarships etc (and another one for discussion of selection bias, which also led to flame-outs). We would discourage discussion of those matters in the GPS threads even if they were just part of a post because responders would pick out the controversial part to attack.

When we made the change we got many complaints like yours, though not always so articulate nor reasonable, but the complaints got fewer as time went by.

The scholarship virus got contained in one ward and a funny thing happened: when people discussed the scholarship matters in the new scholarship thread, the posts got more reasonable and less inflammatory than they were in the GPS thread. It seemed like the stirrers had lost interest.

I started to see the beginnings of too many discussions on scholarships etc and the start of a bit of slanging off and taunting after last weekend in the Qld GPS thread, so I took the gloves off.

The isolation of scholarship discussion will stand because it works. I don't think I even have to ask the other moderators about that after what we went through two years ago.

As to whether there should be a separate one for the Queensland GPS, or not, is another matter.

I have argued in the last few days when people have raised the point that the scholarship thread is Sydney-centric, that it is so because Queenslanders don't use it.

If I take this to the other mods they will probably say to give the existing one a go and see what happens.

So let's see if using it can work for Queenslanders too. The issues are the same for each state - only the names of the schools differ.

I think you will find that NSW writers on the matter, such as "Hugh Jarse" will have a big interest in the Qld situation and write some interesting stuff - and so will others - but they may not visit a Qld GPS scholarship thread to give their input.

Nor might other Qlders wanting to complain about losing players to Qld GPS schools be attracted to using a thread with GPS in the title.

Let's give it a go for a while and if the argument is that the season is not very long, then the rebuttal is that the matter is not altogether about this year, but future years also, when different parents etc will be writing on the matter.
