If the Reds were going to sign a winger from Wests Tigers I'd much prefer it to be Koroibete than Lote. But can't imagine either of them happening anytime soon.

CURSED Waratahs and Wallaby winger Lachie Turner could defect to arch-rivals Queensland Reds to revive his career.

Turner is off contract with the Waratahs and is seriously considering taking up an offer from the Reds, who are hunting an experienced outside back to replace Digby Ioane (France) and Luke Morahan (Force).

Officially, Turner and the Waratahs remain in talks but it’s believed there is little chance of him staying. It is understood he also has an overseas offer, and will make a call in the next few weeks.

It’s been a tough couple of years for Turner, who has effectively sat out the last two seasons after badly tearing a hamstring in 2012 and breaking his leg this year. It is understood Richard Graham remains a big fan and believes there are many good years to come from the flyer, who is still only 26.

Turner, who has played 71 Super games and 15 Tests, was in good form for the Wallabies at the end of 2011.

Surprised Ben Daley re-signed. He will be stuck for opportunities behind Holmes and Anae at loose head you'd think.

In the backs, players like Ioane and Morahan are departing and (so far) only rookies arriving..... Turner is a possible signing who appears unwanted by the Waratahs.....

Some of the younger players are going to have to step it up if they are to have a hope of making the top six.

FORMER Wallabies finisher Lachie Turner is on the brink of signing a deal to play with the Reds in 2014 in a shrewd move that will bolster the club's depleted wing stocks.

A broken leg in April ruined this season for Turner, 26, who is eager to continue his 71-game Super Rugby career which has stalled with NSW Waratahs.

His experience as a winger of 15 Tests would be a valuable salve for the loss of Digby Ioane (Stade Francais) and Luke Morahan (Western Force).

Turner has his own injury to fully overcome but he does offer insurance with Dom Shipperley (shoulder) and Rod Davies (knee) at the start of long recoveries from surgery.

The Reds have announced 28 of the 30 names who will be on their 2014 playing roster but it is the hunt for a missing link like Turner which is the head-turner.

University’s sharp-stepping Jamie-Jerry Taulagi, 20 and still qualified to play for Samoa, has been signed as a foreign development player. His exciting attacking ways will be measured against GPS in Saturday’s Premier Rugby preliminary final at Ballymore.

Backrower Jarrad Butler, who played 11 times for the Reds this season, has switched to the Brumbies.

New coach Richard Graham has locked up the core group who have taken the Reds to the Super Rugby finals for the past three seasons.

He has also shown huge faith in inking new deals for lock Dave McDuling, who didn’t play a game for the Reds in 2012-13 because of two knee surgeries, and injury-prone back Aidan Toua.

Toua has played just five times for the Reds over the past three seasons. He could easily have been let go but, at 23, Toua’s best can still be ahead.

Forwards Albert Anae, James Hanson and Beau Robinson are locked in to the end of 2015, prop Ben Daley will be a Red until the end of 2016 and boom youngster Chris Feauai-Sautia has re-signed for 2014.

While exciting young backrower Curtis Browning will have a bigger role in 2014, the Reds forward ranks look short on dynamism and line-busting power overall.

"We have retained the core group of players who have delivered Queensland rugby success over the past three seasons. We have worked hard on establishing a culture that the players want to be a part of," Graham said.

Indeed. That squad is so low-risk (in terms of new players able to compensate for or fix 2013's serious attacking weaknesses) and utterly unadventurous, can any of us seriously see it beating, for example, the Cru, Bulls, Chiefs and Brumbies into the 2014 top 6?

Confirms my and others previously expressed view that the whole Reds management and coaching establishment peaked on July 9, 2011 and that triumph was somehow implicitly deemed enough. We thought we'd invented something that'd come with its own auto pilot and go on forever. The meek manner in which we played and lost badly in both 2012's and 2013's S15 QFs said it all.

We have, best case, cruised, and worst case declined, since 2011 and no one within the Reds establishment has greatly concerned themselves with anti-complacency innovation and fundamental strategic improvement. 'When Greatness Calls' as our catch cry was sadly exposed as self-congratulatory hype.

And as but one consequence I believe we will really struggle to hold off a significant decline in 2014's membership levels over 2013's.

At what point does a player become "unsignable" with regards to injuries?

From a moral point of view, I think it is great that they are sticking with a lot of guys who are constantly injured as it is hardly their fault, but from a business point of view, I think it's insane that they are sticking with a lot of guys who are constantly injured regardless of whether it's their fault or not.

There doesn't appear to be a great deal of cover for when the regulars go down, given that the replacements are guys who are almost always injured themselves.

Is Richard Graham going to be lacing on the boots this year?

Lachie will be a great pickup if he can stay fit. Fullback is the biggest area of concern for me, how would he go there? Would be no noted kickers in the back 3 so i guess it depends how how Graham plays Cooper.

This idea of 30 man squads doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Whats the actual squad size rule these days imposed by the ARU? Is there a number of academy players that can train with the team as well?
