Oz Schools will have a good chance against the two Ireland Schools teams.

Their next best chance will be against the Ospreys Academy Under 18 players and the Scotland Academy Under 18.

Most of the England Academy U/18 players will have been connected with Academy professional team even whilst they were at school and full-time since their school year ended in May, apart for a few returning to school in 2013/14.

Eight years ago Oz Schools beat the England Under 18 team IIRR, but England have ramped up their programme for youngsters since then.

As I have reminded folks a few times: I saw an England Under 18 team beat an Oz Under 19 team at Weigall Oval in June (I think) 2011. On the average they would have been one year younger, and slightly smaller; but their conditioning was superb from their club academy S&C programmes whilst still at school. They were bursting out of their shirts whereas the older Aussie guys looked like normal young Colts players.

Naturally they beat the Oz Schools team handily, and looked like pros against schoolkids.

Imagine when they play an Oz Schools team soon, and will be six months more advanced in the strength and conditioning on what that 2011 team was—and also six months more advanced in rugby nous.

It won't be pretty.

Another Australian pack who has no idea how to stop a rolling maul. It's not always the players fault but this seems to go from this age all the way to the idiots going to Cardiff this weekend. Have they been taught how to sack a lineout or any of the other basics such as taking a player out?

Disappointing to see that the ARU still have the 2012 Aus Schoolboys team up on their website, instead of the 2013 team.

Oh well, they might get them up in time for 2014 as it's just around the corner......

Interesting to see H. Jones selected on the wing and Henley at fullback.

Has Henley played any footy at 15? IIRC Jones played a fair bit of time at 15 for Barker 1st XV this year.

Also interesting to see how the other Jones (M.) goes at 8. Only ever seen him at second row. If this doesn't work out, it is good to see Fakaosilea on the bench to come on to settle things down.

Henley played quite a bit of 15 for St Peters this year in AIC 1st XV comp. So he's no stranger to the postion

Your memory is sound HJ. The younger HJ played mainly, and often brilliantly, at fullback. He reads the play extremely well and was very effective at injecting himself at pace into the back line. Kellaway is a great player, but in his absence I'd love to see Jones in the gold 15.

Maclean Jones was the Nudgee, GPS 1, & QLD 1 #8... Certainly not foreign to the position.

He was only selected in the squad @ lock due to a lack of depth across the country in that position & a number of outstanding back rowers.

Australian Schools 31 defeated Osprey's 7 after leading 12 - 0 at half time. Sandell, Moeroa, McInerney and Sa'aga all received game time off the bench.

The boys are still having trouble with the referees with another heavy penalty account against them, particularly in the first half.

I don't think there were any significant injuries and Kellaway has been training and may not be far away from a return.

Here is the team match report from today's game

Match Report – Macquarie Bank Australian Schools v Osprey’s Under 18s
Date: 1/12/13
Venue – Brewery Field, Bridgend

Spurred on by watching the Wallabies win against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday evening, the Macquarie Bank Australian Schools team hit the ground running in the final match on Welsh soil against the Wales regional champions, Osprey’s. The venue was the historic Brewery Field in Bridgend, home to many famous Welsh players, JPR Williams just one of many.

From the kick off, the Australian Boys threatened the Osprey’s defence with several early damaging charges but it wasn’t untill the 10th minute of the match that Australia scored its first try. Following an incisive bust by Maclean Jones, Henry Hutchison supported off his shoulder to race away and score out wide. Unfortunately the conversion attempt missed but the Australian Boys held the early upper hand.

Following a flow of penalties against, the Australian attack again threatened with some powerful runs close to the line which ended with Evander Guttenbeil carring three players with him as he crashed over the line just left of the uprights. This time Mitchell Third converted the try for a 12-0 lead as the referee blew his half time whistle.

The second half started much like the first with the Australian Boys really asserting themselves through physical work at the breakdown. Off a terrific phase that produced quick ball, replacement centre, Tepai Moeroa charged through a hole and raced 60 metres to score out wide. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. From the restart the Australians were under fire by a fired up Osprey’s team that contained several players backing up from the Wales Under 18s match.

The referee again found fault in the Australians with several indiscretions. Back rower, David Morris was yellow carded and the Australia was down to 14 players. Osprey’s had gained terrific field position and spun the ball wide to their open side winger who beat the tackles of three Australian defenders to score a spectacular try. The kick was converted and the Australian lead was now down to 10 points after dominating much of the match to that point.

It didn’t take the Australian Boys to respond with Tepai Moeroa crashing over for his second try after good lead up work by the forwards. Mitchell Third added the extras as the lead was extended to again to 17 points. The Osprey Boys never gave up and lifted once again.

The exchanges were torrid for the rest of the second half but it was Australia who had the final say in the match when Josh Anderson supported well after breaking from a scrum to score near the left hand upright. Mitchell Third converted the try and Australia took their lead to 31 -7. This completed the scoring for the match as the referee blew his full time whistle.

The Macquarie Bank Australian Schools team deserved their first win of the tour and will take a great deal of confidence from the performance into preparation for the next match against England Under 18s at The Harrow School, London on Wednesday 4th December.

It must have been great for the lads to have a win against an Under 18 team most of whom would have left school in May and had been training full time with the Ospreys programme since then (when our blokes were studying)—and part-time whilst at school.

News from the tour is that Andrew Kellaway should be right to play against England.

I could never work out what a second cousin was—or a third cousin. I should google it but am too lazy.

It's all holidays when you're retired Jasdec.

I can recommend it, except that you have to be old to qualify. I don't recommend that.
