Please reread your last sentence and take a massive dose of humility

Um, no. I'm not saying TSC would win, just play if they meet in a Gala event. 2 of the teams they are playing are in the top 15. Thank you for the list.

Aren't you forgetting the Sevens tournament at TSC? I think this happens this weekend. For those interested in the double tiered system, View have been replaced by TAS!! Good luck to them for stepping up. It will be interesting to see how they fare. By all accounts View's foray last year was a pretty accurate predictor of the season ahead.

Can anyone give me details of these games? I would like to watch, but don't know when the games are on.

Jeppe @ 11
St Johns @ 71
Langa HS @ >100.

Quite right. I think Pretoria Boys was also mentioned but I got confused when looking at the list of the top 100 wineries and boerewors restaurants that are also on offer. From the various meetings I don't think it's going to be much fun for the boys but they are looking forward to it and a 2 inch thick steak costs $3.

It goes all day, starting with group matches to iron out your game then working thru to playoffs. I hope TAS does well. The PNG side flown in from Ok Tedi mine is a blast...

Ah, here it is:
games kick off at 9:00am, with finals from 3:20pm.

Im not sure they do - I know in one of the last 3 years there has been no 1st XV at St Ives and I thought it might be this one.

That may well the case. I don't follow them close enough, but I have seen both Grammar Preps on rugby draws with Open As and Bs - certainly in some years.

Still, 27 players in an intake of 180 is even smaller in number than High and there are probably a lot of state schools who don't even have a rugby programme who would have more than 27 rugby players.

I assume that this is the smallest age group ever at Grammar? I seem to recall from last year's thread that Grammar 13s were competitive - or was that High?

Take a message SGS mums:
oedipus is alive and well
Sons once taught
Be the empolyer now be warned
old safetynet wins the day
you're an employee, is safer that way
call it authority

No Grammar 13As were losing to C teams and High did them comfortably.
The best age group is 16s. There is rumour that they will be playing Bs rather than C's.

I'm not taking that message to anyone without first getting a translation.
I think it has gone beyond mums being worried about injury and I think it some ways it reflects a problem rugby has more generally.
Rugby is perceived by many of the parents as neanderthal and they have absolutely no affinity with it. This is the thin end of a wedge rugby is starting to feel.
I think many of the parents are not the least bit interested in sport of any sort but since it is compulsory they do the one with the least impact on them.
Cricket numbers are not much better.
The anglo/celtic games tradition is dying in the community and its on life support at Grammar.

Thank you. Much appreciated. I shall try to get to see at least some of the games.

One suspects that as sport at Grammar declines, some parents/boys with a sporting orientation are choosing another schools and this further weakens sport at Grammar.

Can Grammar do anything to reverse the trend? Has it gone too far to do anything? Or is the school comfortable in its current academic focus and not particularly bothered about sport?

(I'm not criticising the academic focus)

You're right about the decline in the traditional GPS anglo-celtic sports. We see it in most of the GPS schools - the more diverse the student body, the more this applies.

I think grammar is doing all it can.
It has serious professional coaches with excellent CVs in the 3 "big sports".
I think one needs to take a step back and see how it goes against non-GPS schools, including non-Sydney schools, to measure it. I suspect they will go ok in 1sts against st pats. I would expect them to beat Cranbrook.
They have tours to Perth, Singapore and Canberra for rugby from next week so they're trying to introduce the uninitiated to the rugby life that is sometimes only known of if you played the game. I think in the mid term that will become a selling point: I mean, who wants to tour with soccer players?
There is room for the view that the Sydney GPS is just a little too serious for something that you cannot make a living out of and not being competitive at that level may not matter for kids with other fish to fry. And when you read about the training programs some of the schools are doing - not just for rugby but for rowing - I wonder how it is truly healthy to specialize so early.
Each to his own.

Agree with this and I wish Grammar well in improving all of their sports. No doubt that the GPS 1sts competition has become too high stakes for the good of it's participants.

I guess one challenge that SGS have is to make the school attractive to parents whose boys are smart enough to go there, but are looking for a strong sporting culture as well. I've always believed that sport and academic pursuits aren't mutually exclusive - some schools manage it better than others and some have natural demographic advantages.
