Point is, they they still have space to move under the salary cap.
How much are the Reds realistically going to offer, $800'000 over two years would be about the clubs upper limits.
I don't buy into the reports that Karmichael is locked in for the Reds, he has shown in the past he is willing to back himself for some varying roles across different codes. Not just that, I'm waiting for David Smith to show his hand with the new slush fund for player recruitment and retention, Karmichael is a prime candidate for this fund.
I hope he does go to the Reds and I've been pushing for it for years, but I'm not overly confident it will happen.

Unless David Smith opens the purse, the Broncos do not have a spare 500,000 to give to one player per season - that they would need to woo Karmichael.
You would think K is the perfect option for the war chest of David Smith however the hell it works.

Split it however you want to - the 700k is over three years, which ends up being 230 odd k a year. Not chump change is it? But at the same time, not exactly anything for K to get excited about.
If the third year was not to be executed then that would be 230k up in the air as per the current deal. In all likely-hood however, his contract will be upgraded by that point.

I believe the most the Reds or any Super side in Australia can pay a player is 350,000 based on the current bargaining agreement?
So they will both receive the maximum base contract. Plus endorsements, and then they will have to back themselves to make the extra playing tests at $15,000 a pop.
The appeal for K will be in creating value for himself here before going back to Europe or Japan.

Qwerty I'm pretty sure he's referring to minimum salaries, squad sizes and the salary cap and how these affect each other. Based on a cap of $4.1M it works out to about $136,000 per player on average. Factor in that some players will earn over that, but no player can earn under a certain amount, say $60,000 for the sake of it, it limits the amount available for increase from that amount.
Rugby does not have as harsh Third Party Agreement rules though. So the Reds may source more of these agreements.

I don't doubt that, I'm just saying for example, for him to be on 400k they essentially need to take 266k from that 136k each for other players.

Say it is 400K then, there is a set amount of money the Super Sides can pay before the ARU must top them up, which is why top-ups are so important. Surely we are all across this by now?

there is no set amount, the salary cap is in reference to the total wages of players at the union, not individuals. The Reds could pay Karmichael $1.2million if the pleased, but they aren't going to be able to retain many other players. I haven't seen the 2013 CBA but the 2011 version also had a limit on the value of third party contracts that clubs could arrange.
The Salary Cap: $5million
Minimum wage: $67'500
ARU Top Ups
When talking ARU top-ups there are a few things which need to be understood, as of this year the provinces pay a set percentage of a Wallabies wage. Players negotiate their overall wage with the ARU, the province pays a percentage of the negotiated value of the player, this portion/percentage is what counts towards the super rugby teams salary cap. So in essence, the super rugby clubs have zero control over how much they are going to pay a Wallaby, that is all set by the ARU, the only option they have is determining whether they can fit his wage in their salary cap.

However, that is not how I thought the salary cap was working.
Although, I am not certain myself.
I was under the impression that a province could only pay a player so much, and that is why it was becoming so hard for the Force and the Rebels to recruit players because they could not pay a certain player more if he were already on the maximum base contract?
