I'm not so sure Dave.
Reading the press release they are hoping to have 4 fixtures in total.
They already have a squad of 32,and there is talk of adding Schoolboy stars.
That's just too many people, with too few game, for any real development.

I will just have another bleat about the madness of fast tracking youngsters.
What about the Domkins of the world?
Tell me which of 2014 Manly colts are going to leap frog him next year, yet they were all picked and he is yesterday's news.
It's madness I tells ya!

I'm not sure either, and hadn't heard about the schoolboys.
I remember the days colts use to be u21s and included u 17 upwards, and a number of u21 got a run in grade.

To be honest I'm not sure what difference the one year makes - nobody sent Harry jones back to colts.

With the 2 games I will now go to each home game.

if it is u 21 there are a lot of players that have been playing grade that have been overlooked, Dombkins for 1. I suppose it is the same when new competitions/development opportunites arise - short term memory loss means only recent "superstars" are considered and those that have been playing club for a couple of years are forgotten.

Dombkins didn't get picked because he's with the big boys now, it is the colts that need the development. It's his first year out of colts I would have had him training / keeping fit with the main squad, maybe not game time this year but ........ Can't be far off.

That's not right Dave.
There are quite a few non Manly guys the same age as Dombkins in that squad.
Why do the colts need extra development?
They are now open age footballers.
Let's be honest, none if them set the world on fire in 3rd grade last week.
Dombkins was one of the 2's best in the game straight after.
I know who I would be developing ATM.

I said training with the main squad for the same reasons you have just explained.

NRC - I'll support it because its rugby.

BUT SERIOUSLY.
  • Shute Shield is our third tier and provides the path way - seriously some first graders season ended 3 weeks ago, and others end today.
  • Meanwhile they have mates still running around in subbies having fun.
  • NRL & AFL look at clubs to promote the game through the whole season - instead we have the Tahs who may play 8 games a season in NSW.
Yeah there are some young kids (grass roots) trying to climb the ladder - and their season is over now, while their social mates are still running around - we targeted the wrong market. Should have targeted the Shute Shield.

But how do we lift WA & VIC so they have their own nursery?

FRUSTRATED.

I think Melb/Vic is one of the fastest growing rugby nursery's in Aus - they seem to be one place where they are getting it right.

I just dont want the NRC to turn out to be a Rev grade Super Rugby for players who cant make the Wallabies side - I know the comp hasnt even started yet but to really be a "development" comp they need at least 3 more sides in the comp - I dont think we will see enough of the club/fine line Super Rugby players.

Queanbeyan/Monaro side - made up of Brumbies/Monaro Players/Queabeyan whites players

Southern Inland Side - NSW

And another Queensland side

Dave,

SS can't be our 3rd tier. Why? Because it's only Sydney and Waratahs players. Logistically it only can and should be. The top 175 players are contracted. There are 180 starting players in the Shute Shield every weekend. Roughly the same in Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne.

That means for the 9 players (Based on 2015 squads of 32) that aren't in the 23, and let's say the next 32 players who are in the hunt in each city, they are playing in a competition where the majority of players are well below their level. They are not being challenged adequately and aren't being tested for the next level properly.

That's 45 contracted players, 175 potential players playing in a pool of roughly 800-900 players. Imagine the drop in quality from these 175 to number 800 on that list? I've played Dewar Shield in Melbourne - I reckon I'd be about 800 on that list. Players aren't preparing themselves for professional rugby running rings around me on a Saturday.

Rebels and Force shouldn't be expected to send players back. Firstly there's a costs, secondly they cannot logistically monitor the players progress and thirdly, there is the injury management issue which is why the Brumbies moved all their players to the JID. It's also short sighted and poor for the game and clubs long term to be parachuting players in that do not contribute to their clubs otherwise.

The NRC means that these players each weekend are playing against a pool of the players that are ranked 24 to 230 of those who are fit and available in Australia. Players will develop to Super Rugby standard better by being challenged further and will also be adequately tested to determine if they are closer to Super Rugby standard.

Look at JJ Tualagi from the Reds. Was a standout in premier rugby in 2013, looked woeful at Super Rugby level in 2014. Why? Because there is such a large gap in the standard.

Even if every player in Australia player Shute Shield (just a hypothetical, why should NSW rugby and SS clubs get the benefit out of all of Australian rugby), that's still 3 more teams and talent spread thinner.

Shute Shield is great - but I dont think its any stronger than the ACT and QLD comps - maybe even abit weaker than the QLD comp? - def not the 3rd tier - as mentioned above you cant have a state comp as the 3rd tier comp - it needs to be national.

Maybe incorrectly worded, after this weekend for the next 8 weeks;
What is the 1st tier comp. Test rugby?????
What is the 2nd tier comp. NRC ?????
What I'd the 3rd tier comp. Subies ?????
What is the 4th tier comp.
There are a lot of quality players not playing after this weekend, whilst AFL, NRL, and Subbies kick on - I'd hate to be sitting around watching.

Once we sort out what the tiers are, the next challenge is to map the development path from Under 6's to Wallabies to the tiers.

The whole thing is a bowl of spaghetti at the moment, with many gatekeepers maintaining fanatical control over their empire.

I think you'll find eventually club rugby will run alongside the NRC or there will be reserve NRC teams.
?????????
Shute shield a couple of years back bottom 6, top 6 first grade NRC, and 2nd grade joins with bottom 6 first grade (but a puzzle to be worked on).

they've already announced a national sevens comp and I'm fairly sure they're treating this year as a demo and will expand rapidly to an appropriate amount of teams (though most likely wicks, south brisbane and Adelaide). Also push for womens and U21's already from the clubs so those should appear.

It's most likely that eventually with successful development shield and QPR and JID will turn into a level similar to the NRL's QLD and NSW cup.
