Word is the graded finals of the GPS sculling trials are happening this Friday evening/afternoon. Still putting my money on Sullivan.and McDonald to dominate.

Have to say I've never heard of paying cold hard cash for bow numbers. I reckon the boys are pulling a scam! Must be a GPS thing because of the thieving little rascals.

If the GPS sculling trials were important I would clear my schedule and drive out - but seriously now I know that it really means - "Not much at all".

I hope the boys have fun wear a hat and sun screen but I have to say - why bother - the boys out of class - fuel and food for what? and guess what they have to turn around and go back on Saturday.

I am thinking the Joeys 1st VIII and 2nd VIII are having a battle between themselves - that is healthy - wonder were they wearing socks???

The Shore School did not turn up for a reason last week and I am beginning to think it was a good idea not to!

Might be a fund raiser for the school hosting the Regatta?

GPS Rules or lack thereof and Regatta's are a different that is for sure.

But it is certainly a good forum - nothing like I expected.

Isn't SBHS the school the school that lost a trailer of boats in an accident on the way to SIRC? A young coach pulling the trailer - the vehicle had electric brakes - crash - not good.

Perhaps the budget was spent on replacing boats because the insurance claim was refused.

I am learning to tow - driving a vehicle with electric brakes and towing is a new experience.

Not a trailer with boats on at first just to clear. And if you see me on the road - please don't avoid me.

I think you're being a bit harsh about the sculling trials. If you're in it you're still wanting to win it. I think Shore are slack. Missing them and resting up last week didn't seem to help them in the VIII.
At the end of the day, it's a good attempt by the GPS to get some recognition to oarsmen from all the schools. You don't just pick the winning GPS First XV as the combined GPS 1st XV. There should be more emphasis placed on it and it doesn't help if schools piss on it, otherwise the reaction you get is exactly what you've said.

I agree with you "little pig" I really do - so make the sculling trials important by marketing it better - publish the results - have sculling races at GPS Regatta's. Make the GPS competition interesting - not have it as an isolated group.

Allow anybody who wants to have a crack have a go - do not limit the field to 1st VIII crew members only.

I do not think anybody who will race on Friday afternoon thinks it is nothing and I do not want to take away the hard work and training ever but "pump it up so to speak". Give them a medal or a fancy bit of paper.

Sweeten the deal - I admire the bloody hard work these young men are doing - I know I go home and flop on the lounge after my rowing efforts I do not head back to class for the day.

Where are they now?
Just a random analysis to track the progression of a group of Year 10 rowers from a school selected at random - Shore in this case. The study tracks the 32 rowers who raced in the four year 10 eights races at the 2013 Head of the River and matches the names to those listed to race at last Saturday's Newington regatta, as per NSW Rowing results. The Shore Year 10 crews came 1st, 2nd, 1st and 1st, so you could say that it was a successful year group to say the least. Of the 32 rowers who raced in 2013, only 12 raced at the Newington Regatta last weekend.

2013 Year 10 1st Eight - Four members still racing - 3 in 1st VIII, 1 in 2nd VIII
2013 Year 10 2nd Eight - Four members still racing - 2 in 1st VIII, 1 in 1st IV and 1 in 2nd IV
2013 Year 10 3rd Eight - Two members still racing - 2 in 3rd IV
2013 Year 10 4th Eight - Two members still racing - 1 in 2nd VIII, 1 in 3rd IV

At the Newington regatta, Shore fielded 3 eights and 4 fours in the opens = 40 rowers. 12 were year current year 11's who raced in the Year 10's in 2013, 2 looked to be year 11's who did not race HOR in 2013, and the other 26 were current Year 10s. (a few guesses here, so it could be +/- a couple for the year group allocations)

I am not sure this is representative of all crews in this age group, but it would be interesting to see the ratio of Year 12 to 11 rowers across each of the schools and see if there is a consistent pattern for agre group split and drop out rates moving into Year 12.
Hmmm. That does sounds like a big drop off at Shore. I always thought it'd be more a 25-30% drop out across the board (for various reasons.... study, loss of interest, not fit enough, couldn't see themselves in the senior VIIIs, the mum bus getting sick of early starts etc.) Though, for Shore, there was a backup of talented rowers from 2012-14 with the presence of Horsley, Wells, Riley, Haasgard(?), Cooke etc who seemed to back up for two years in the senior VIIIs. Maybe that diminished the pool?

To me the GPS sculling trials and naming of honorary 1st eight is equivalent to naming All-Rounders or 1st in subject in HSC results. It's not your ATAR, it's not your uni offer, it has no consequence but a recognition that you were at the top in a demanding pursuit.

The ones that make the VIII do get a GPS rowing pocket.

Good point behindtheshed - but I feel certain that if you to be name an "All-Rounder" or came first in a subject your test results would be published and you would get a medal / certificate something ??? A photo taken ?? That each young man would get something they could put in your resume as recognition that their hard efforts did not go unnoticed.

Nobody has confirmed what happens to the boys who do well - the results are not published. It is all like it is done in the shadows - these boys I think deserve more than that.

The AAGPS website is very dry. No pictures of these going across the line - nothing - like chewing on a bit of cardboard really.

Again I ask why bother? Market it well - let ever boy know in the school that these particular rowers have gone up against the best of the other GPS schools and performed.

God no. But there are plenty of them lurking out there ready to pounce if you suggest they won't win!

Oh yes "Little Pig" I have noticed. Shore have certainly performed well in the past of that there is no doubt but the times they are a changing.
