Hugh are they the QUEENSLAND (VICTORIAN Branch contingent)?
It so hard to tell because I have not seen any of them ;(. I suppose we will have to have to wait for Nationals ;).

He was an absolute standout in the Australian schools team, second year captaining nudgee, and third year in QLD I. There's no one else with as much national and state experience as him.
In the team that you put up as your Australian Team, you had both Harrison Goddard and Jack McGregor. Both of these lads came from winning teams last year too Derick. Both qld white and red were eliminated early.
Why should they not pick these two young men?

That's a pretty good attempt. I don't know of non GPS (Qld) players, but of the GPS (Qld) guys watch for either #6 S Wallis (ACGS) and K Meni (NC), # 10 L Mosley (NC) and #15 G Robertson (IGS). Liam Mosley can play # 12 as well. J Farrell (BBC) has been playing well and solid, but is not a given yet! There have been some good performances from a few other #6&#7 out there.

As I said previously I don't think K Pritchard (NC) is going to contest this year.
It'd be a waste if he didn't, given the fact that he's repeating year 12 this year purely for a shot at highest honours.

It's been explained to you many times in this forum... Neither McGregor or Goddard come close to Hewat in terms of experience. The fact that QLD came third last year is irrelevant. Loss builds character, and the selectors can clearly see this as Harley Fox was chosen as captain last year as a QLD player. Is there anyone else that has been playing national champs since they were 15?

I think
I think the CHS, ISA and CAS boys will have a few boys in the team.
Probably. I selected this team based off who played Australia and state sides last year, especially in the NSW and QLD teams since they were the most dominant. All other players I just think are good enough to make it.

Happy to Chat

How about we wait and see who actually gets into the team first. Just because a player was in last year doesn't give them a right to that position this year.
Yeah why not, let's shut the forum down until the teams are selected and published, that way we won't need to speculate or debate the merits of who should be in or out. We can call it the "Green and Gold Publication"

Any reports from the Ponies vs Rebels Schoolboys, @Pablo?

Nothing major out of both sides, I know the Vics were using it as a selection trial along with one on the weekend just gone. Both sides ran players on and off over 3 x 30 min periods. Vics were missing a fair few from their final squad due to injury, illness and the 7s camp in Sydney.

Think ACT got up by 2/3 tries, pretty even though and the horsemen's numbers worked to their advantage..

if loss breeds charaacter... Shit, well we best pick the BBC (*I picked on a team you know, unlike other states) 16d winger, whomever he is. He is well adjusted to loss. Just remember derick, neither qld sides won last year. length of time spent in a job means jack shit. I work with a guy that has been in the same job for 22 years....Our politicians show this. It breeds contempt.
I am not saying the kid is that, but FFS realise that there are as good, if not better options

And no, it hasn't been explained to me. It is just another qlder talking up, what was last year, a poor year for qld school rugby. Should this be reflected with the honour of captaincy to a losing team captain? This may change in a few weeks time. And if you feel longevity should be rewarded with captaincy, That means Watmough should be Australian rl captain. Yep. that works

Hi Derick,
I noted that one of the NSW players you suggested (already known) was from outside the right association. This may be more strongly applicable in QLD as there is a significant gap between the "public schools" and the other school associations

this Friday's NSW selection trials will help make some decisions but of these I can see 7 names that are not GPS. of those seven there is more than one that has demonstrated significant abilities as a leader at representative levels. The only thing that might limit the QLD sway on the team this year is last year's result.

in a squad of 22, if NSW dominates the National trials in the manner they did last year, they may end up with 7 NSW say 9 Qld and a quota value of 2 each to the minor states. of the 7 NSW, 4 or 5 will be GPS but they may not all get a number </= 15

Okay so that's what this is about... You just don't like Queenslanders. Your reference to Reece Hewat as just "the kid" shows that you really don't follow qld schools rugby at all. Last year wasn't a bad year at all, Qld may have come third behind nsw but many of the qld players selected in Australian schools were some of the best players there were. I believe there are more qld schoolboys from last year currently playing in Australia U20.

Explain how any other player would make a better captain.

Quota system will get some in Pablo. It is just Dericks qld bias

There is a quota system?? What the! I find any method of selection that uses of a "quota" rather than merit on the field on the day pretty offensive. Wow in this day and age a quota on elite sport!
Sounds like something a politician would enforce on the population to make the lay of the land "level" even though it is not so.

Wooh there cowboy! We were asked who we thought was going to be captain and we gave an opinion. So don't come into town shooting everyone. Sure Qld lost the games last year so? That's last year, history! And yes time in the saddle shouldn't be the only criteria for the job.

The position should be based on merit and ability not what happened in 2014 or 1978 for that matter. The argument just doesn't stand up. And if you think Qld School Rugby had a bad year then one could argue that the Australian Schools also did not have a "run to plan" time as well. We just said the young man had some experience that's all! An opinion just like you (except less personal).

I agree there appears to be a "gap" forming between Qld GPS and other school associations, which I think is not healthy for Qld Rugby. Schools Rugby in Qld is becoming too concentrated I think. We will wait and see if this "unhealthy" trend continues on Friday & Saturday. Hopefully not.

Again I don't think last years results will have anything to do with who is selected and the results for this year. Things change guys! I'm glad and welcome the fact that NSW Schools have such a diversity of choice, I think that is healthy (and I'm a Qld GPS old boy)

Last years effort wasnt't bad? Um ok.
And what makes a good captain?
You will have to ask the chairman on this one. As for the rest Derick, you are just repeating yourself

I would love for you to quote my being personal. Tenure does not give the god given right that he states. If the qld lads play well and win and the boy is selected, yes, he may be an option. As would Goddard and McGregor, that everyone is so keen to shoot down. They are also leaders too
