Is this a Friday wind up? I actually think 1st DIV should be able to pay and the lower DIVs play subbies rugby for the right reasons. Mateship, club spirit etc.

Put you bib back on mate and wipe your chin your dribbling shit

Clearly a Lane Cove supporter.

If you had a well ran club, you would understand he frustration of being honest and not allowing financial remuneration to our trusted players.

Club cricket pays, why cant we?
Why does the sporting body get involved in a private affair?
It is also illegal by definition, as it is a deadset restraint of trade.
This is why no one cares about union anymore and another competition like NSW Cup league is on tv.

As a metaphor, Its like this gun buyback scheme announced today.
The good ones (like Balmain) will stop and give up their guns and the bad ones will still have them anyway.

The metaphor is they will continue to pay their players in the forms of cash, fuelcards and holidays to places like Byron or Vegas.

You are a Lane Cove supporter and you are saying otherwise to protect your club, you are NOT fooling ANYONE.

Whats despicable in my eyes is you are unfairly tarnishing the good name of another Subbies team you choose to misrepresent.

Sorry i find it appaling and so does everyone else here.

The best fishermen don't use too much burley....

I think that Lane Cove and Balmain should have a boxing match with Birchgrove vs Bundaddy with Subbiesveteran as ref. Everyone could get paid some CA$H money

Oh Fuck it....I'll bite....

Put simply, Subbies is about having a bit of fun. If you're serious enough to want money to play, go the Shute Shield or League.

When clubs, by virtue of doing what they can for EVERY player, don't have wads of cash lying around come up against the big cash clubs, they get smashed and don't have fun.

That's without mentioning the risk of injury this kind of mismatch causes.

So, let's follow your logic, and allow rich Clubs to pay players.

Probable Scenario
  • in round one Balmain smashes poorer team. In round two poorer team forfeits because it's a waste of time.
  • Disparity in in club finances is enough to suggest this would happen more than once so Balmain is now paying players to NOT play.
  • End of season, 3 teams wish to go down to Div 2 and all teams refuse to be promoted. Div 1 is now a 5 team comp with all other division filtering through. The following year Clubs see Div 1 as a waste of time - and unjustified expense - so Div 1 folds and Div 2 moves up with amateur status reinstalled
    OR
  • Clubs are forced to play Div 1 so players leave causing forfeits on mass - see repeat of point 3
Either way, the outcome is people stop playing rugby.

If players seriously want to be paid to run around a comp they are obviously over qualified for then they are very petty human beings who have little else going for them in order to elevate their lives.

I see your shit dribble and raise you a sweeping generalisation about small minded money grubbing:D

Sorry Heavyd but, with respect, you can't have promotion and relegation between a professional and amateur competition. You would create a tier between Shute Shield and Subbies requiring a whole new level of administration. Particularly in Australia, that alone should tell you it's a bad idea.

Subbies Rugby is about having fun with your mates. Go to Shute Shield where quality players should be proving their worth.

While I agree with the premise of this point and the overwhelming attitude around Subbies must be to play Rugby and have fun with your mates (read drink beer and tell lies) I also think there is a point where we all need to look at initiatives to basically get more people to play Park Footy. If some of those initiatives are to get higher quality players on to the park to attract fans, more players, etc then I personally feel this needs to be looked at.

Its hard to argue with what clubs like Balmain (and before anyone jumps in there have been plenty more) have done over the years with getting guys like Giteau, etc to have a run. (Theres no way that bloke ran on the field for the love of the game.) Maybe clubs could apply for special dispensation to get players to help grow the game??

With regards to promotion between Shute Shield and Div 1. Its clear with the comp the way it is at the moment something needs to be done otherwise the Ladders will keep looking the same way for a few years. Promotion/Relegation may not be the complete solution, but it cant be discounted without an alternative solution proposed.

I dont have the answers to this, yet, so ill turn it over the GAG brains trust to solve all our woes... over to you Bes, Veteran, Lane Cove bloke... Heavy is obviously too busy working on tips for next round...

Allowing pay in one Division immediately creates another Premier Division.

Then 2nd Division becomes the Subbies' top division. And then they start wanting to allow pay.

Then we get ANOTHER Premier Division.

And so on.

Paying looks like a fucking fabulous idea - I'm part of a club that did it a decade ago and won shiny things doing so. But the amount of fucking money sunk into that beggars belief.

We all know it happens still. I have seen players this year get 200 dollars to play a game, 400 to another and the other a Jet Ski + insurance.

I'll assume - as you're someone who loves the game (and fishing) so much - that you've reported your findings to Subbies.

Why?
I'm happy for teams to dish out payment. It's how it should be. Having fun and providing incentive to help the players families.

Let's face it. Payment happens in many ways.
Besides the obvious ones I already mentioned.
A certain high division club sponsors players small businesses by having team lunches at their cafes etc.
In a middle division half the top teams are paid in the form of fuzzy white powder. Sometimes at half time!
It's not monetary but I question the long term health of the players doing this on a whim.

Player payments out the Balmain rugby club on the map!
Made mainstream news etc.
It would be a huge boost to see Karmichael hunt or Quade cooper turn out for sunnies teams next year
